1. PLAY GOLF While some people consider golf “a good walk spoiled,” – a quote which, it turns out, Mark Twain did not originate – many dads feel differently. Fortunately, the Valley hosts more than 200 golf courses to help dad take advantage of our 300+ days of sunshine. Some golf courses offer a Father’s Day deal; for others, you can take advantage of existing, steeply discounted summer rates (like our very own Lookout Mountain Golf Course – green fees starting at $35 – rental clubs available for $45) 2. GO FISHING There are actually more fishing spots around the Valley than you’d think, including the urban Tempe Town Lake. Given that the temperature forecast for Father’s Day points well north of 110 degrees, however, it might be a good idea to head somewhere outside the Valley. Try the Mogollon Rim about two hours to the Northeast. At 7,000 feet, the temperature tends to cool by 10-20 degrees. In fact, your family can make a weekend of it and camp at a location like Clear Creek Reservoir or Knoll Lake. 3. VISIT A MUSEUM Nobody said that dads can’t appreciate a good museum, and you’ll find plenty in the Valley. We’re highlighting three that we think Dad might particularly enjoy. The Commemorative Air Force Aviation Museum in Mesa is home to a range of vintage military planes and memorabilia. It’s perfect for war, aviation or history buffs. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for kids 5 to 12, and $12 for seniors 62+. During the winter, the museum offers rides in the planes, including a B-17, if you want to give your dad a Father’s Day gift he won’t get to use for a while. For dads with an interest in western history, Scottsdale’s Museum of the West offers free admission for dads on June 19. Learn more about the cowboys, settlers and Native American tribes that built the history of this region. Be sure to catch the Lewis and Clark exhibition, along with the other exhibitions of art and Western items. Maybe your dad leans more toward the fantastical and imaginative side of life. This weekend the i.d.e.a. Museum launches “Sci-Fi: Fantasy to Reality” exhibition. It showcases artwork centered on science fiction stories and “future” technologies. In addition to artwork, it features an inventors lab, green screen room, time tunnel and costume creator, along with the ability to create your own sci-fi work of art. Tickets are $8 per person, however, the museum participates in the Blue Star Museums program that provides free entry for active military members and their families. 4. GET THE DRIFT Friday, June 17 to Sunday, June 19 is the Junefest Drift & Drag event. You and Dad can catch some awesome drift racing action, along with drag racing, for $15 a day – children 12 and under are free. The main events – including drift racing, side-by-side drifting and Drift the Wall– are Saturday, June 18, starting at 4 p.m. If your dad likes to do his own drifting – intentionally or not – sign him up for the Saturday morning Beginner Drift Clinic ($120). He’ll get hands-on training with a professional drifter and actual drifting experience. If he’s already got some experience under his belt, he can get tickets to join the competitions. 5. HIT THE BOWLING ALLEY Every AMF/Brunswick Zone/Bowlmor in the Valley – and there are almost two dozen of them – offers a Father’s Day Family Bowl package. You get two hours of unlimited bowling and shoes, food and beverages, and a $5 gift certificate per guest, for a single rate. Price varies by location, but the range seems to be from $15 to $22 per person. Uptown Alley in Surprise presents a Father’s Day deal as well. With the purchase of an entree worth $11 or more, dads get a choice of a $10 game card or two games of bowling plus shoes. In addition to bowling, Uptown Alley also hosts laser tag, video games, billiards and a sports area.
