RECEPTION IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING AT CLARKE HALL
MESSAGE FROM
THE DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF NURSING
Congratulations!
On behalf of the administrators, faculty,
staff, students, and alumni of the Hampton
University School of Nursing, I offer you
sincere
congratulations
on
your
accomplishments! I extend my best wishes
for your future as you complete your
transition from students to professional
nurses.
In Ecclesiastes 3:1, the bible says that “there
is a time for everything, and a season for
every activity under heaven….” This is
truly your season to shine. You can enter
this season of your life assured that you
are ready to take your place in the world’s
greatest profession: NURSING!
Tradition has served the Hampton University School of Nursing well over the
past 118 years! We will continue to build on that proud heritage as you join
the ranks of our illustrious alumni who have reached the pinnacle of nursing
practice, nursing education, and nursing research.
This is not a “Goodbye” message.
It is a message of “Welcome” to real
nursing…a message of “Welcome” to the community of the best alumni a
School of Nursing can have…a message of “Welcome” to a group of
professionals whom I will always be proud to call colleagues!
Stay in touch and visit your family at “Our Home by the Sea” often.
Sincerely,
Pamela V. Hammond, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF
Dean and Professor
Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott, RN, FAAN
Class of ‘78
Dr. Loretta Sweet Jemmott is the van Ameringen Professor in Psychiatric Mental
Health Nursing and Director of the Center for Health Disparities Research at the
University of Pennsylvania - School of Nursing. Most recently, Dr. Jemmott
received the Claire M. Fagin Distinguished Researcher Award. Dr. Jemmott
received a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Hampton Institute
(Hampton University) in 1978.
She also holds secondary appointments in the University's School of Medicine
and Graduate School of Education. In 2004, Dr. Jemmott was appointed
Assistant Provost for Gender and Minority Equity Issues for the University of
Pennsylvania.
Dr. Jemmott has been involved in a number of research projects focusing on
designing and testing culturally sensitive, developmentally appropriate, and
theory-based strategies to reduce HIV risk- associated sexual behaviors among
African American, South African, and Latino youth and adults. She, along with
her husband, Dr. John B. Jemmott, III, have been funded by the American
Foundation for AIDS research (AmFAR), the National Institute of Child Heath
and Human Development, the National Institute of Mental Health, the National
Institute for Nursing Research, and the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) for a total of $92.5 million research dollars to conduct 24 HIV
risk-reduction randomized controlled trials in various settings, including schools,
community based organizations, housing developments, clinical settings, and churches.
She is one of the nation’s leaders in HIV risk reduction intervention research having one of the most consistent track
records of evidenced-based HIV risk-reduction interventions across various populations. The outcomes of her research
include: a) a reduction in HIV risk-associated sexual behavior; b) a reduction in the frequency of sexual intercourse; c) a
reduction in unprotected sexual intercourse; d) a reduction in the number of sexual partners; e) an increase in condom
use; f) a decrease in unprotected sex; and g) biological outcomes showing a reduction in the incidence rate of STD at 12month follow-ups. These finding were published in high-level journals including, Nursing Research, JAMA, and the
American Journal of Public Health.
Dr. Jemmott is a globally recognized translational nurse researcher. Three of her evidenced-based adolescent HIV riskreduction intervention curricula were selected by CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health Program entitled,
"Research to Classrooms, Program That Work!" for dissemination to schools, community based agencies, and clinics
nationally and internationally. These curricula have been culturally adapted, tailored and translated into various languages
for use in regions where HIV is at pandemic levels, including counties in Africa, South America, and the Caribbean. Her
interventions for adolescents include videos created by teens winners of her national and international HIV-prevention
essay contest titled, “The Hear Me Project”. This project is accomplished in conjunction with the Select Media Inc., and
has been featured on MTV (2006) and will be featured on HBO in 2007.
Recently her 20-minute evidenced-based HIV risk-reduction intervention for women (Sister-to-Sister) was selected by
the CDC as a national model to be disseminated for use in women health clinics as part of the DEBI Project (Diffusion of
Effective Behavioral Interventions). The purpose of DEBI is to bring science based, community-and group-level HIV
prevention interventions to community-based service providers and state and local health departments to enhance their
capacity to implement effective interventions that reduce the spread of HIV and STDs.
Dr. Jemmott has received many awards for her research and community efforts, including the Congressional Merit
Recognition Award, The Red Ribbon Award for outstanding service in the field of HIV/AIDS, and the Governor of New
Jersey's Nurse Merit Award in Advanced Nursing Practice. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a
member of the CDC's Division of HIV, STD & TB Advisory Council, and a member of the Institute of Medicine. Most
recently Dr. Jemmott received the Sigma Theta Tau International Episteme Award and the Distinguished Daughter’s of
Pennsylvania (Governor’s Award).
Mrs. Antoinette Davis Langford
Class of ‘64
Mrs. Antoinette Davis Langford, an Assistant Professor and member of the
Quarter Century Club, is an accomplished educator with more than forty years
of experience and service in the School of Nursing at Hampton University. She
received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Hampton Institute in
1964 and a Master of Science degree in nursing from Boston University in
1966. Mrs. Langford was the first African-American OB-GYN clinical nurse
specialist at the Medical College of Virginia.
During her career as a nurse educator, Mrs. Langford has taught courses in the
baccalaureate nursing sequence from the first course, Introduction to the
Profession of Nursing, to the last course, Senior Seminar. She has made her
focus the education of Hampton University nursing students having taught,
advised, and mentored thousands of students! Her quiet but stern demeanor
proved to be the right tempo for young students trying to decide if nursing was
really what they wanted to do. Her assignments were informative, interesting,
and fun. A scavenger hunt to identify historical points in the School of Nursing always provided a delightful and
academically challenging experience. Her broad base of expertise has resulted in the development of a series of video
tapes entitled "Computations of Drug Dosages" as well as a learning module entitled "Well-Child Health
Maintenance." Her publications include four maternity learning modules and an article on the role of the clinical nurse
specialist. She has shared her expertise through professional presentations on maternal assessment, assessment of
pregnant teenagers, and the role of the clinical nurse specialist.
Mrs. Langford has received several honors including the coveted Hampton University Lindback Distinguished
Teaching Award, Soror of the Year from the Zeta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, and the Hampton University
School of Nursing Excellence Award for Distinguished Service. She was inducted into the Hampton University
School of Nursing Hall of Fame in 1993. Mrs. Langford has received national and regional recognition in two
bibliographies: Outstanding Young Women and Outstanding Women of the South. In 1992, Mrs. Langford was
inducted into the Hampton University Quarter Century Club. She is a
charter member and past treasurer of Delta Iota Chapter of Sigma Theta
Tau; was faculty advisor to Tau Beta Chapter, Chi Eta Phi for 12 years;
and was project staff on two federally-funded projects (Project BEST and
Talent Search for Potential Leaders in Nursing). During 2000-2005 she
served as Co-Project Director for a community partnership grant Hampton
University Pre-Entry Project (HU-Prep), which focused on promoting
interest in nursing as a career among elementary, middle, and high school
students. Activities of the project included a summer nursing course and
laboratory experiences in the School of Nursing, which included travel to
nursing communities for immersion experiences. The HU-Prep Project was
well received in local and national communities.
Mrs. Langford is married to Roy J. Langford. They are the proud parents of
Kara-Arlene. Her mother, Mrs. Arlene B. Davis, is also a nurse and lifetime
member of Chi Eta Phi Sorority Inc. Her father, Mr. Howard Davis, now
deceased, attended Hampton Institute in Carpentry (1933). We are certainly
proud to honor Mrs. Langford as she retires after more than 40 years of
service and devotion to Hampton University and the School of Nursing.
We look forward to a continued professional and personal relationship with
this consummate educator.
