Gibbon Game: 16-8 Win!!!
The DT Cardinal Jr. High Football got their first win of the season in an exciting 16-8 overtime
victory over Gibbon. “It was a hard fought game from start to finish and we were very proud of the
efforts given by our young men, especially considering the beatings they had taken in the first
couple weeks.”
After taking the opening drive deep into Gibbon territory, the Cards gave up the ball on downs at
the Buffalo 2 yard line. Not to be denied, the Cards struck pay dirt on the defensive side of the
ball by tackling the Gibbon ball carrier in the end zone for a safety. The remainder of the half was
dominated statistically by the home standing Cardinals but whenever they got a drive started they
would shoot themselves in the foot with penalties or fumbles. The score at the half was 2 – 0 with
DT hanging on to the lead.
The third quarter was much like the first half with lots of yards but no scoring. The Cards finally
found the end zone early in the fourth quarter on 21-yard pass from Cade Sterner to Peyton
Stewart. The PAT attempt failed and the score stood at 8 – 0 as the clock wound down. The
visiting Buffaloes fought valiantly and for the first time in the game put a drive together, scoring
with only 9 seconds remaining in the game, and after converting on their 2 point attempt the score
was tied at 8-8 sending the game to overtime.
The Cardinals got the first possession in overtime and took advantage immediately as Caleb
Schuppan scored on an 8 - yard run and then added the PAT to give the Cards the lead. The
young Cardinal defense rose up once again stifling the Gibbon possession and securing a
victory!!
