Relay Recess Parent Letter

Dear Parents,
A new and exciting program will be taking place at Park Forest Elementary this year. The American
Cancer Society® Relay For Life® already exists in our community, providing an overnight event where
community members have the opportunity to honor cancer survivors and remember those who have
battled cancer while raising money for the American Cancer Society. Because participation as a school
in the overnight event would be difficult, we are having our very own Relay Recess here at the school!
The students at Park Forest Elementary, in collaboration with the 11th Grade health students at the High
School North, are going to design a health fair to be held in conjunction with the Relay Recess. The
students will be concentrating on topics related to Nutrition, Sun Safety, Bike Safety, Tobacco, Physical
Activity, and Being safe outdoors. The goal is to engage everyone in hands-on activities about each
topic. The team is will also be bringing in the Patton Township Police Department to teach the students
about bike safety. For the Relay Recess, students will be walking around the outside track to try and
help raise money for the American Cancer Society. The students will have the opportunity to walk in
memory of someone, or to walk to support a survivor. Luminaria bags will be offered to the students as
well. The students may have these bags brought to the big Centre County Relay for Life, to be displayed.
We are hoping to raise awareness and to make a difference in our community. The students are really
excited to take this project on. Help us make this a success for them.
Park Forest students can raise funds during the walk-a-thon, selling luminaries, classroom coin wars or
seeking online donations at RelayRecess.org .Park Forest Elementary Event. Students in the classroom
that raises the most money will receive a free admission pass to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park on July 8
and a $6.00 off coupon for their family members. The individual top fundraiser will get a free ticket to
the Relay For Life Spike’s game on Sept 5, 2012 and will get to participate during games between the
innings. As we begin to plan our school’s Relay Recess, I invite you to join us! Many hands make light
work, and we all want this experience to be the best experience possible for your child. I hope that you
will consider joining me as we become a school that takes up the fight against cancer! The event will
take place on May 3, 2012, rain or shine. Send an umbrella or poncho along, if it is raining.
Sincerely,
Stacie McDermott- Physical Education Teacher
