Rules
Rugby sevens, also known as seven-a-side or Sevens, is
a variant of rugby where the teams are made up of
seven players, instead of the usual 15, with shorter
matches adapted to the olympic games. There are
variations in the rules to speed up the game and to
adapt the game with fewer players. Some of the main
changes are:
O 7 players per team on field (instead of 15).
O One or two minutes' half-time (instead of fifteen
minutes).
O Three player scrums (instead of eight players).
O Five substitutes, with five interchanges (instead of 7
and 7).
Equipment needed
O The equipment needed in the rugby 7 is
basic, and it consists of a pair of boots, the
team short and t-shirt. You also need a
mouthguard. If you are part of the foward
you will also need shoulder pads and a
headgear
Place where it is practised
O The rugby can be practiced everywhere, you
only need grass and an open space, but it is
commonly practiced in a rugby pitch, that is
generally in a stadium.
History
O Rugby sevens was created as a fund-raising
event for their local club in 1883 by Ned
Haig and David Sanderson, who were
butchers from Melrose, Scotland. The first
ever sevens match was played at the
Greenyards, the Melrose ground, where it
was well received. Two years later, Tynedale
was the first non-Scottish club to win one of
the Borders Sevens titles at Gala in 1885.
Most famous Sportsperson
O The most famous sportsperson of the
Sevens Rugby is Waisale Serevi. He was a
Fijian reduced rugby player, and in the
present he is a coach, in the same sport.
He is widely considered as one of the
greatest rugby seven players ever because
he won two Worlds Cups with his national
team, Fiji, in Honk Kong 1997 and 2005,
and also he has won five times the Honk
Kong Sevens.
Tomasi Cama
O Tomasi Cama (born on 11 November 1980)
is a former New Zealand rugby union player.
He played for Manawatu in the Air New
Zealand Cup, and the New Zealand Sevens
team. He is the son of former sevens player
Tomasi Cama. In 2012, Cama won the World
Rugby Sevens Player of the Year Award.
Medals
O There are no medals because this sport is
the first time that is part of the olimpics
games
