BASINGSTOKE BRIDGE CLUB NEWSLETTER
Issue 248 September 2014
National success
Congratulations to Bob McRobert and partner for coming 21st out of 287 in the prestigious Swiss
Pairs at Brighton. They were 7th going into the last match which they unfortunately lost heavily to
the team who ended up second.
Club success
In the recent mixed pairs competition unfortunately there was no arrow switch. So instead of one
pair wining overall there are two pairs to congratulate: Graham Ledger & Jane Rutherford were the
NS winners and Farid & Lorraine Motamed were the EW winners. They share the trophy.
County events
The Hampshire season begins this month with the Candover Swiss Teams. There will be six eightboard matches with a break for tea. And for the first time it is completely free of charge. However
donations to the Hampshire Air Ambulance will be gratefully received. The county committee
hope people who have never played in their competitions will come along on this occasion. They
may be surprised to find county events are not as daunting as they may have thought. This one will
be stratified, so even if you do not win overall, you may win in your category. You can enter on the
county web site or by telephoning Steve on 02380 702934.
NICKO
The final date for entries for the NICKO is 14th September. Please let me know as soon as possible
if you intend to put in a team. (See last month's newsletter and the EBU website for details.)
September events
The Russell Mather Open Charity Pairs will be held on Monday 1st September. This
competition will also be open to visitors. So please make sure you enter promptly on the notice
board. Basingstoke members will have priority. The cost will be £5.00 for members and £6.00 for
visitors. You will be playing for the Russell Mather Trophy, and there will be prizes for the first
two pairs (as long as there are enough entrants!) As with the Mollie Simmons Swiss Pairs, the club
will not be making any money from this competition: all proceeds will go to St. Michael’s Hospice
in Basingstoke.
Friday 5th September is Teams of Four. Please enter in good time. If you are looking for
partners or team mates please let me know, or try using the website.
Our French visitors arrive on Saturday 13th September. We’ll be playing for the Raymond
Guerin Trophy on that afternoon, starting at 2.30 pm. Please sign on the board if you would like
to play, and also if you will be staying for the meal afterwards.
There is another round of the “Six Partners on Friday 19th. There are still two more rounds after
this, so plenty of time to find another three partners or improve on previous scores.
Ladies, please note the new proposed date (Saturday 20th September) for the Tessa Henshaw
Ladies Individual. There were not enough entries to let us play this in August, and quite a few
people have asked for it to be re-arranged. Please enter in good time on the notice board or let me
know if you wish to play.
Arranging partners in advance
Although we have an excellent system whereby any members or visitors can come to our club
without a partner and be guaranteed a game on a Monday or Friday when there is a spare player,
you may also wish to know beforehand if anyone else is looking for a partner. Viv Morris has
kindly volunteered to take phone calls about this, as she already does for Wednesday players. She
will let you know if there have been other enquiries. Her telephone number is 01256 889946 and
her e-mail is [email protected]
Club Teams League
As I said in last month’s newsletter, we are hoping to start a club league for teams of 4. Please let
me know as soon as possible if you would like to enter a team. There can be 4,5or 6 members in
any team, and you would be able to bring in substitutes as long as they were not in any other team.
Matches will be played on specific Tuesday evenings throughout the year. Once we know that
there are enough entries to make a viable league these designated Tuesdays will be published.
October dates for your diary
October is going to be a very busy month for club competitions, so please make a note of the
following dates:
The Club Pairs will take place on Monday 6th and Monday 13th October. (Last year we played
this on Fridays, so this time it will be on two consecutive Mondays.) As last year, your final score
will simply be an average of your scores on the two evenings. Please enter on the notice board.
The Miriam Cup, a competition restricted to Thursday players, will be on Thursday 16th
October. Partners will be available as usual.
Monday 28th October will be the first round of the monthly Individual. There are 6 rounds,
always on the last Monday of the month. If you haven’t played in this competition before, do give
it a try. It’s a completely different challenge playing with a new partner every time.
The Intermediate Pairs will be played on Friday 31st October. This is a new competition
restricted to members below the rank of master (i.e. holding less than 5,000 EBU master points). If
you are unsure of your ranking, simply click on the secure members’ area in the club website:
(www.basingstokebridgeclub.org.uk).You will then find a heading entitled “ranking”. Click on this
to see ranking list. Alternatively you can find your rank by entering the members’ area on the EBU
website and clicking “master points”. Anyone can play as usual on 31st October, but only a pair
ranked below master can win the competition.
If you have forgotten how to log in to our members’ area, Richard has provided the following
reminder:
Go to web site, click on "membership" on the box on the left hand side.
This takes you to the log in page.
Put your email address in the top box. Enter password. If you have forgotten your password:
Click on "forgotten password". (Do the same if you have never had a password.)
Leave site.
You will then receive a password via email.
Go back into site and enter details on the log in site (email address in top box and password in
bottom box.)
You are now in the Members’ area giving you access to all confidential information - minutes,
messages, find a partner, your details (which you can amend), and the membership list.
If you want to change your details, click on "Account" - change any details about yourself but at
bottom of page you get the opportunity to change your password to something easy to remember.
Enter twice. Click on "save" at the top of the page. When you have finished - click "log off"
Tuesday classes
Beginners’ classes are starting again on Tuesday 16th September. If you know of anyone wishing to
take up the game, please let them know they would be very welcome. They do not have to be club
members. Anyone interested should phone Chris on 01264 333175
Christmas Party
I know, it’s still August, but it seems like a good time to let you know the committee’s plans for
this year’s Christmas party, so that you can reserve the date in your busy calendars! This is an idea
that was suggested and accepted unanimously at last year’s AGM. We thought, instead of a whole
week of separate parties, it would be nice for the whole club to get together for once. So we have
booked All Saints church hall for the evening of Wednesday 17th December. It was felt that
members would find a mid week date more suitable than a weekend one at that time of year. Please
try to keep this date free. Further details will be published in newsletters nearer the time.

John Glasscock, one of our regular scorers, has sent the following article explaining the new
method of sending out results and answering some members’ queries about percentage scores.
Helen
Results email and information on scores
As you will all have seen by now, the club is using a different method of making results available
after playing sessions. This is partly to encourage members to look at the club home page, which is
kept up to date with the latest club news, but it also gives you access to a more comprehensive and
a better presented set of information on the hands played than you see on the web page attached to
the old style of email. This article explains how you can get the most out of the information
available.
After a play session, the email you receive will direct you to the club home page. From here, you
can access the latest results by clicking in the top right hand corner of the page 'Latest Results'.
You don't need your user ID or password for this. This link will take you to the ranked results.
You can then select your personal results by clicking on your partnership. This will present a table
with each of the hands played and a percentage showing how well you scored compared with the
rest of the pairs playing the same hand. How is this percentage calculated? Well it is quite simple:
All of the scores of the pairs playing NS on a hand are compared. For every pair you beat, you
score 2 points and for every pair whose score you equal, you score 1 point. This is then expressed
as a percentage of the maximum you could have scored - which is the number of times the hand is
played minus one and then multiplied by two. For example, if a hand is played 6 times and you
beat 2 other pairs and equal 2 other pairs, you will score 6 points out of a possible total of 10
points. This is then converted to a percentage (60% in this example). The same is done for EW.
When there is a single winner competition Mitchell movement (NS Stationary), the arrow switch at
the end ensures NS and EW scores can be compared - there is a complex mathematical logic which
shows that if you arrow switch approximately 1/8 of the boards, then the result reflects a fair
comparison between all NS and EW players. If there is a 2 winner session (as is often the case on a
Wednesday) with no arrow switch, then all players seated NS are in one competition and all EW
players are in a second competition. The percentages are colour coded, moving from red (0-20%)
to green (80-100%). So the challenge is to keep reds off the scorecard!
If you want to look at an individual hand, you can select the hand on the right hand side of the
page. This will show you the range of bids and tricks won by all pairs playing the hand as well as a
table in the bottom right hand corner which shows the makeable contracts by any declarer
assuming best defense and double dummy play.
