CNS (part of KIM)
Computer & Network Services which forms part of the DVC KIM portolio.
KIM
The Deputy Vice Chancellors Office of Knowledge & Information Management.
SCS (part of CNS, KIM)
Student & Client Support Services (SCS) is part of CNS. This area looks after Desktop
support for the staff and student laboratories of the University in a Federated model. In
some academic areas the support for desktops are the responsibility of the Faculty and in
other academic areas CNS provide this support.
In addition SCS also provides the approved vendors with approved copies of the hard
drives (see disk images) to vendors in order for University machines (PCs and laptops) to be
delivered, preloaded with the required university software, from the vendor directly to the
user.
Included in the SCS portfolio is that of Quality & Communications as. This quality service
manager is responsible for exactly what the title states and it can be added that the quality
of service relates to all services that CNS supply. The Communications role exists to
promote the ICT related information relevant to the University electronic user community
through various channels.
DISK IMAGES
A disk image is a copy of the information contained on a computer hard drive. The
information on the hard drive includes software such as the operating system (eg.
Windows), office applications, antivirus software, etc.
WITA USER CATEGORIES

Objective of the WITA Program
This program has a single objective:
To define how ICT services will be provided to the entire Wits user community.
Introduction
It has been a long standing problem for “everyone” to gain access to Wits e-resources. The term everyone is
loosely used here and fundamentally the reason for this program's existence. The program called WITA is an
acronym for Wits IT Access and addresses the crucial need to formalise the definition of the Wits user base from
an ICT perspective.
In the world we live in the expectation is growing by the day that wherever you might go, you will have some
level of access to the electronic world of email and Internet. Due to the enormously complex environment that
makes up all that is Wits this program will no doubt need to continue into the future to adopt to technology
changes and the related electronic services that people expect from their interactions with a leading university.
Our user base stretches across a wide variety of user types (or categories) that can be defined through their
relationship and interaction with Wits.
Currently there are many systems recording information about people, but none of the existing systems cater for
all the user categories, nor governs what electronic resources and/or services should be made available to these
people. The systems include the i-WITS HR and Finance systems as well as the ICAM system.
These systems do not all cater for all the various user types, such as staff at the teaching hospitals, exchange
students or conference delegates. This is mainly due to these systems not being applicable to all the user
categories when it relates to the potential ICT services that could be associated with the user category.
Purpose of this document
To formally define the University User Categories as first step towards initiating the WITA program.

Conclusion
Once this document is approved the next step in the WITA program would be to define the Service Bundles.
These Service Bundles will essentially consist of different collections of ICT service groupings. In addition the
Service Bundles will be allocated to the respective User Categories.
Once the Service Bundle document is approved, a variety of projects will be identified under the WITA program.
These projects will need to be prioritised by the relevant ICT committee in order to move forward in achieving the
objective of the WITA program.
