Volume 27 Number 12 11 May , 2017 Respect, Excellence, Community UNIFORM I would like to ask parents to ensure that their children come to school in full uniform. I have noticed in the past few weeks that a number of students are coming to school wearing non-uniform shoes. Students are required to wear approved black leather shoes or boots - no other footwear is permitted. These shoes may be purchased from Perry’s Footwear, Main St., Stawell. Students are permitted to wear a navy or approved beanie in school colours during winter; caps are not part of the College’s uniform and must not be worn with the uniform. The College recently introduced a winter jacket with the school logo to the uniform list. This jacket is available from Foster’s Mensland, Main St., Stawell. We have been informed that the jackets are currently out of stock, but these should be available again by Monday 22 May. After this date, students will be expected to wear the approved jacket only – students will not be permitted to wear any other jacket. If parents are experiencing financial difficulties and cannot meet the uniform requirements, please contact the school. Kevin O’Neil ACTING PRINCIPAL Senior Girls Netball On Tuesday 9th May, the senior girls played in their school netball competition at North Park. The day was filled with a lot of excitement, chatter about the deb, and some netball of course. Overall, the weather was fair and it was a lovely day out. We had wins over Marian and St Brigids, two losses and a draw. Big thanks to Maxine Clough who umpired for the day also to Miss Jones who organised and supported us; it’s much appreciated. LOVE YOUR SISTER COIN COLLECTION Many thanks to everyone who supported the collection of 5 cent coins on Monday for the Love Your Sister Big Heart Project. A total of $166.15 has been raised. Congratulations to Rachele Nankervis who coordinated the appeal. House Athletics On the 27th April Stawell Secondary College conducted our Annual House Athletics Carnival. Despite the miserable weather at times, it was good to see students out supporting their House and competing. The results were close all day with MacKenzie House narrowly beating Lonsdale to take the overall win at the end of the day. Black Ranges Athletics On 2nd May, 38 students from Stawell Secondary College competed in the Black Ranges Zone Athletics Carnival at North Park. A fun day was had by all with several students progressing to the next round in Ballarat. Of particular mention was Cam Notting who set a new record in the shot-put and the 15 and 17 Boys 100m Relay Teams, winning their events. All students competed enthusiastically and it was great to see the entire team cheering on Stawell throughout the day. A big thanks to Jo Orr and Jodie Walker for their support and assistance taking photos for the day. House Cross Country On 4th May Stawell Secondary College conducted their Annual House Cross Country Event. Perfect conditions resulted in some significantly quicker times from many competitors compared to past years. As a result of this, over 40 students will be heading to Murtoa to compete in the Zone Cross Country in the coming weeks. The winning House for the day was Black Range with House leaders graciously accepting victory in the gym with a deafening cheer. This win means that across the three major sports carnivals (swimming, athletics, cross country) each of our three Houses have each won a carnival. Once again a big thanks to Jo Orr who again volunteered her own time and took on the role of photographer for the event. Senior Boys Football. As the dew slowly lifted from the lush green grass of North Park, 23 enthusiastic Year 11 and 12 footballers arrived, ready to take on four other schools in the Senior Boy’s Football competition. They day started with convincing win against Ararat Community College, with Jesse Portelli starring with four goals in a 52-12 victory. The only negative to come out of this games was the neck injury to Nathan Churchill. Thankfully, there was no major damage. Our second game was more challenging. Whilst we kicked the first goal, Horsham College was a very talented outfit and they piled on the goals after half time to defeat us 30-7. Paul Summers and Riley Graveson rallied hard throughout this game and Jayden McCartney kicked our only goal. We were back on the winners list against St Brigids, kicking six goals to one to run out winners, 40-6. We had six individual goal kickers in this game, with Tom Walker and Paul Summers dominating through the midfield. Special mention to Lucky Ika, who played in the ruck and jumped all over his much taller opponent to give our midfielders first use of the ball. The last games was always going to be tough against a more-fancied Marian College team, but our young men played a great game and came away with a draw, 16-16. Jesse Portelli was again amongst the better players, as was Paul Summers. It was very pleasing to witness the way in which these young men applied themselves throughout the day. They demonstrated fair play and great sportsmanship in all games, and played unselfish, team football. It was a great day for all involved and a great result to have two wins and a draw. Jesse Portelli was awarded the AFL Medal as Stawell Secondary College’s best player. He kicked six goals throughout the day and set a number of goals up for his teammates. Regional Development Manager, Jason Muldoon was very pleased with the standard of football on display and he commended all players for their efforts on the day. Mr. Brearley Attendance Matters! It is a requirement, stipulated by the Victorian Government that all schools must have in place procedures to regularly monitor student attendance/absentee patterns. As part of this requirement, Stawell Secondary College’s policy states that a parent/carer is responsible for contacting the school to let us know if a child will be absent and why. Parents/Carers can notify the school in a number of very simple ways as follows: -A phone call to the office on 5358 1700 -Provide a written note to be handed to the student’s Homegroup teacher/General Office -Email to [email protected] -SMS text message to 0408 588 318 -Enter absence details via parent portal -Reply text to an absence notification received from us via SMS As part of our attendance strategy to improve our attendance records, the Attendance Officer will make contact with parents/carers of students who are absent where the school has not been notified in relation to a reason for their absence. Over the next four weeks, parents/carers of any student who has an unexplained absence will receive an absentee letter in the mail, which will be required to be completed by a parent/carer and returned to the school within three working days. If you are experiencing difficulties in ensuring your child’s full attendance, please contact the dedicated staff who can offer you support. Late Arrivals and Early Pickup If your child arrives late to school or needs to be collected before the end of the school day, we ask that parent/carer contact the school to give permission, or ensure that you come into the office where your child will be signed in or out of our computer enrolment system. It is VITAL that this is kept up to date in the event of an emergency.
