Event Training Day Information
Abseiling down the side of a skyscraper, or completing a flying fox from 160m, can be a daunting
feat to contemplate. At Urban Descent, we want you to get the most out of your adventure
fundraising experience, so in order for participants to be safe and prepared for their event,
attendance of a training event is mandatory for all.
FAQ’s
Q: I have abseiled / done flying foxes before
– do I have to attend?
A: Yes, you must attend a training session for any
event from a height of over 135m. Due to the height
of the event, some special techniques will be covered
that aren’t required for most commercial roping
events.

An exemption is only given to participants who have completed the same event before. Please
note that completing the flying fox does not give an exemption for an abseil event, and vice
versa. An exemption can only be approved by a senior roping team member, please call Urban
Descent on 9472 4663.
Q: Who will be running the training session?
A: Adventure Out, who have specialised in running outdoor adventure programmes since 1984.
Visit their website for more information: adventureout.com.au.
Q: How long will the training session last?
A: Each session will last a full morning or afternoon – approximately 4 hours.
Q: What will be covered during the training session?
A: You will receive an overview of the big event, then be fitted with a safety harness, helmet and
gloves and given a safety briefing and demonstration of abseil techniques before putting these
into practice. Training is aimed at upskilling a novice to be able to tackle the building safely and
confidently.
Q: How many descents will I do at the training session?
A: You will complete the activity a number of times; those with previous experience will need to
complete at least two descents. Participants with limited or no previous experience will have the
opportunity to participate as many times as necessary to feel comfortable. For previous events,
several people attended more than one session; we want you to feel confident of your ability.
Q: How many people will attend each training session?
A: There will be a maximum of 30 participants at each session.
Q: Where will the training be held?
A: In Perth, the training is conducted in either Statham’s or Mountain Quarry in the Perth
foothills. On registering for a training day, you will be provided the relevant map with specific
details.
Q: How do I book my training session?
A: You will receive an email with a link to the training sessions on TryBooking.com. Simply select
your preferred event / session time, complete the required details and book. You will then receive
confirmation emails with details, links to a map and a calendar invite.
Q: How much will the training session cost?
A: Nothing - the cost is included in your registration fee.
Q: I have registered as part of a team – do we have to all attend together?
A: No, team members can attend separately, however each member must complete the training.

A: Training will be held in rain, hail or shine. Should extreme weather conditions adversely affect
your session, the training will be rescheduled.
Q: Do I need to bring anything?
A: Please wear appropriate clothing and covered, lace up shoes. You may want to bring a snack
and your own drinks, although light refreshments and water will be available.

your fundraising, so bring a camera. You are welcome to bring friends and family, but remember
that you will be there for up to four hours.
