HAMLET: ACT I

HAMLET: ACT I
CLASS SET
1. The very first line in Hamlet is “Who’s there?” How does this set the mood for the entire play?
What does Horatio first assume the appearance of the ghost means? Why are there such intense
war preparations in Denmark? (1.1.69-106) What do we learn about Hamlet through his
interactions with the guards? Also, even though Horatio is a student along with Hamlet, he is
never given a title, and his place in the kingdom is unknown, yet he is Hamlet’s most trusted
confidant – what does this say about Hamlet?
2. When Gertrude claims that “all that lives must die,/Passing through nature to eternity,” Hamlet
responds, “Ay, madam, it is common.” What does he mean through this pun (there should be a
note in your book)? As Gertrude clearly does not understand this double meaning, what is
Shakespeare showing about young Hamlet (remember, we are reading him as a college student)
through his manipulation of language compared to the various other characters? Please give
examples of characters other than Gertrude.
3. How does Laertes feel about Hamlet pursuing his sister? How does Ophelia apparently feel about
Hamlet? How does Polonius treat her? Based on our introduction to Ophelia in the first act
alone, what can we say about her behavior and personality?
4. Look back at Scene 4 and Scene 5: why do you think Hamlet is so swiftly convinced to commit
murder at his father’s behest? What is he swearing to do in his soliloquy in 1.5.92-112? What is
the role of violence in this play (think back to Richard III)?
5. Consider this: the Ghost “cries under the stage” after Hamlet makes the guards swear that they
will never tell anyone what they have seen. How could you interpret that metaphorically? (1.5,
around line 148)
6. Come up with your own in-depth question regarding Act I that has not been addressed yet. You
can consider character, tone, literary devices implemented, etc. Be prepared to share your
question and discuss it in class.
ACT II: Consider the following ideas and what they have to do with LOYALTY. Take some
bulleted notes before we read together for a bit. 
1.
Analyze Polonius’ character. How is Polonius treating his children in general? Build on our
previous discussion.
2.
How does Ophelia respond to Polonius’ questions regarding Hamlet? What does this say
about Ophelia’s feelings toward Hamlet? What is the significance of their relationship?
3.
How do Rosencrantz and Guildenstern function in this play? Why did Shakespeare create
two characters rather than just one to do their “job”? Why does Claudius ask them to spy on
Hamlet instead of Horatio or one of the guards? How does Hamlet react to their betrayal? Discuss
the significance of his reaction.
