P1/2 Class Newsletter – Term 3, 2017 Welcome back to term 3 and a very Happy New Year to you all! Hopefully you are enjoying being back into routines again after the craziness of Christmas. Visiting Teachers This term, our class will have PE with Mrs Gomez on Tuesdays and Thursdays. P.E. will be first thing on a Thursday so I will encourage the children to take their gym bags home on a Wednesday so they can come to school partly prepared for P.E. (as they did last term). Mrs Weir will take the children for Religious and Moral Education on Thursdays. For this week only, PE will be on Tuesday 17th and Friday 20th (first thing). Topic For the first few weeks we will be learning about Scotland. This will culminate in our whole school Scottish Week. We have already looked at the map of Scotland and located our capital city along with some landmarks of interest. The children are hoping to watch the movie Brave during Scottish Week as we found out that the Calanais Standing Stones in the Isle of Lewis were the inspiration for the stone circle in Brave. As this is a PG movie I do need your permission so if you are not happy for your child to watch this movie please complete and return the form at the end of this newsletter no later than Friday 20th January 2017. For the remainder of the term P1s will work with Mrs Lawson and the other P1 class on a Granny’s Attic topic and the P2s will work together with the other P2 class on a Design and Technology Topic – Our Street. This means that each year group will have the opportunity to work together regularly. Maths and Language Work In Language we will finish working on initial sounds in P1 before introducing some phonemes. We will also focus on 3 letter words that the children can build with all of the sounds that they have learned (cvc words). In P2 we will be covering some blends (like bl, fl, cr, gr) as we continue with our work on phonemes. We will spend some time comparing phonemes that look different but make the same sound and therefore belong to the same ‘families’ e.g. ou and ow. Our Big Writing session will now be on a Thursday. Reading will take place on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Our pattern of working will be: Mon Tues Wed Thurs P1 New book Follow-up activity New book Follow-up activity P2 Follow-up activity New book Follow-up activity New Book In Maths P1 are concentrating on securing the number bonds to 10 and P2 are finishing off addition to 20 before moving on to subtraction to 20. Wider Achievements Don’t forget to let me know of any achievements your child has made out of school, no matter how big or small. Our Class Assembly We are very excited to be hosting our class assembly on Wed 8th February at 2.30pm. The class would be delighted if you can come along to see and hear about some of our learning then. If you are unable to come please feel free to nominate a relative or friend to come in your place. An invitation will come from your child nearer the time. Finally, if you have any questions or concerns at any point, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
