Real crowned La Liga champions
MADRID: Real Madrid were
crowned the Liga Santander
Champions following a 2-0
win over Malaga while Villarreal and Real Sociedad
have qualified for the Europa league.
The result on Sunday
night means that the club
has won its first domestic
league title since 2012,
putting an end to a five year
drought in which FC Barcelona have lifted the title on
three occasions and Atletico Madrid once, reports
Xinhua news agency.
Zinedine Zidane's side
travelled to Malaga needing
just a draw to ensure the title, while Barcelona needed
to defeat Eibar in the Camp
Nou Stadium and to hope
Madrid lost.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring after just one minute and 40
seconds and despite the
best efforts of Malaga, Karim Benzema doubled Madrid's lead 10 minutes after
the break.
Keylor Navas produced
fine saves to deny Sandro
and Chori Castro and the
celebrations commenced on
the final whistle.
Barcelona fulfilled their
side of the bargain by defeating Eibar 4-2, but only

biggest title drought since the 1980s. (PTI)
after Takashi Iunu had put
the visitors 2-0 ahead on the
Camp Nou.
In the end a Luis Suarez
goal, an own goal and two
late strikes from Leo Messi,
one of which came after a
wrongly given penalty, gave
Barcelona a win which ultimately was in vain.
The battle to qualify for
the Europa League went
down to the last minute
when Juanmi's header gave
Real Sociedad a 2-2 draw
away to Celta Vigo to assure
they finished in sixth place
ahead of Athletic Club Bilbao.
Villarreal finished fifth after a 3-1 win over Valencia
thanks to goals from Roberto Soldado, Manu Trigueros and Nicola Sansone.
Villarreal depended on
themselves from the start of
the day, and after Soldado
opened the scoring inside
the first minute they rarely
looked as if they were going to struggle, despite Nani
briefly levelling the scores
with a second half header.
Trigueros quickly put Villarreal back in front and with
Valencia fans leaving the
stands Sansone assured Villarreal's win.
Athletic Club Bilbao were
victims of the last ever
league game in the Vicente
Calderon as they lost 3-1 to
Atletico Madrid, who led 20 after just 11 minutes
thanks to two goals from
Fernando Torres.
Inaki Williams gave Athletic, who needed to match
Real Sociedad's result to
assure a sixth place finish,
hope, but Angel Correa finished off a counter-attack to
give the Calderon a fitting
send off.
Real Sociedad knew they
had to go one better than
Athletic to finish sixth and
twice fell behind to Celta
Vigo, as the Galician side
looked to give coach Eduardo Berizzo a fitting send
off.
The game looked to be
up for 'La Real' when Andrew Hjulsager put Celta 21 up in the 90th minute, but
Juanmi's 94th minute header saw Real Sociedad into
Europe, while Athletic will
still qualify if Barcelona beat
Alaves in next weekend's
Cup final. (IANS)
‘Krunal kept us in the game’

Mumbai on Monday. (PTI)
HYDERABAD: Mumbai Indians batsman Kieran Pollard felt that the team
showed a lot of character at
key moments and played as
an unit as they got the better of Sunrisers Hyderabad
by one run to win their third
Indian Premier League (IPL)
title here on Sunday.
Opting to bat, Mumbai
were left reeling at 79/7 in
the 15th over, but Krunal
Pandya's 47 off 38 deliveries helped them reach 129/
8. During the chase, Pune
kept wickets at hand but
took it deep as they found it
tough in the final five overs.
Mumbai had finished first
in the league stage but then
lost the first qualifier to Pune
before coming back to hunt
down Kolkata Knight Riders in the second qualifier.
Coming into the final,
Pune had defeated Mumbai
thrice this edition but the
latter managed to get the
better of their Maharashtra
rivals at the big match.
"The team has come together many times and that's
what happened tonight. Big
up to this man here, Krunal,
he batted nicely and kept us
in the game," Pollard said
after the game.
"The boys showed a lot
of character and belief during difficult moments, like
today. but we have managed
to come out on top," the
West Indian batsman added.
His compatriot, Lendl
Simmons said that Mumbai
have big match-winners that
help them win their third title.
"Our team has several
match-winners and big
match players, so it helped.
They have the experience of
winning the finals and did
that today," Simmons said.
Krunal said that his idea
was to bat till the 20 overs
as he shared a 50-run stand
for the eighth wicket with
Mitchell Johnson (13).
"When the wicket were
falling, I wanted to play 20
overs because I was the
only batsman. I knew if I
stayed till the 19th-20th over
I could attack," he said.

No sign of an end to French
men’s title drought in Paris
PARIS: No French man has lifted the
Musketeers' Cup in over three decades and there is no sign of the frustrating and painful wait ending for one
of tennis's leading nations at this
year's French Open.
A lack of consistency at the highest level, fragile bodies and an outstanding generation barring their way
make it difficult to imagine a French
successor to their last men's singles
champion Yannick Noah any time
soon at Roland Garros.
After it became an international
tournament in 1925, the first eight titles went to French men — but since
then, they have claimed only two titles, Marcel Bernard winning in 1946
and Noah in 1983.
"If you want a chance to win the
French Open, you need to arrive full
of confidence, having won great
matches on the surface and, let's face
it, it is not happening with the French
male players," former French technical director Patrice Hagelauer, the
coach who led Noah to the title, said.
"For the French Open especially
you need to be in top shape physically and mentally.
"Gael (Monfils) played the odd
semi-final but then you've already
reached your maximum and in the quarter or semi-finals, they hold on for a
set or two."
Since Noah beat Mats Wilander 34
years ago, only the mercurial Henri
Leconte has reached the final of the
claycourt grand slam, losing in
straight sets to the same Swede in
1988.
In the last 10 years, only Monfils
(2008) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2013
and 2015) have given some hope to
the vociferous home support when
they reached the last four.
"Since 1983, we've had great talents
— Leconte, (Guy) Forget, (Cedric) Pioline, Monfils, (Richard) Gasquet,
Tsonga, but never players who started Roland Garros with the favourite
tag. It was the case for Yannick, it's
not the case anymore," Hagelauer
added.
"In the last 15 years, incredible
things happened, notably Rafa Nadal
winning the French Open nine times.
"The Big Four generation (Nadal,
Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and
Andy Murray) also complicated
things. These guys are monsters. It
never happened in the history of tennis, even at the time of the Musketeers when there were fewer players."
Pressure is a factor, too, according
to Wilander. "No person in tennis can
understand the pressure on a player
from Britain, the US, from Australia nor
especially from France," he said.
While Noah was a pure claycourter, none of the actual French men are
real specialists of the slowest surface.
"I think French players are more
complete now. I don't think you have
seen a true French claycourter since
Yannick Noah," Wilander said.
Even if Noah remains the last
French man to win a grand slam singles title, France have enjoyed more
success on other surfaces, even if it
all ended in anti-climax. Arnaud Clement reached the Australian Open final
in 2001, Tsonga also made the final
there in 2008, while Pioline reached the
finals of both the US Open (1993) and
Wimbledon (1997). (Reuters)

German Cup in the semi-final by Borussia Dortmund,
Hoeness said the club will
be forced to pay sums that
it had so far never considered but that are normal on
the current transfer market.
The main task will be to
find the right mixture of experienced and youth, Hoeness emphasised.
In addition to Niklas
Suele and Sebastian Rudy
(TSG Hoffenheim), rumours
abound that international
stars such as Alexis Sanchez
(Arsenal) and Marco Verratti (Paris Saint-Germain) and
FC Schalke's young midfielder Leon Goretzka are
Bayern targets. "If Bayern

United, who
finished sixth in
the
Premier

opportunity to
claim qualification for next season's Champions League if
they win Europe's secondtier competition in Stockholm.
Neville believes the clash
with the Dutch side will de-
fine Mourinho's campaign at
Old Trafford.
The Portuguese already
won the League Cup in February to become the only
United manager to claim silverware in his first season.
"The whole season has
been based on trying to
qualify for the Champions
League and, ultimately, they
wanted to finish as the Premier League winners, but
now they've got the chance
to win the Europa League,"
Neville said.
"The pressure is on
United...so it will be interesting to see how the players
cope with the pressure of
being the team that's expected to win." (Reuters)

KARACHI: Pakistan
Cricket Board (PCB), has
decided to call back Umar
Akmal who has gone to
England for the Champions Trophy starting next
month, as he is not fit and
will not be able to play in
this mega tournament.
Umar Amin or Haris
Sohail could be included
in the team instead of
Umar Akmal.
PCB chief Shaharyar
Khan said, "Akmal has
failed in two fitness tests
held before the Champions Trophy in England.
Our strategy involves not
keeping unfit players
ahead, and because of
this we have decided to
call them back. We have
the last date for declaring
the team as of May 25,
keeping in mind that we
will be able to replace
Umar's place in the team
as soon as possible."
Significantly, Amin
and Sohail have not
played ODI cricket for a
long time.
Amin played in his last
ODI in October 2014 while
Sohail played in May
2015.
Umar was not included
in the squad for the tour
of the West Indies but he
was returning for the
Champions Trophy and
now he will have to sit
out of this mega tournament after being found
unfit. (UNI)

BERLIN: After a disappointing football season
with only one title, Bayern

they are considering to invest a record over $100 million into new footballers.
Uli Hoeness, President of
the German champions, announced that the club will
overhaul its investment policy. More than 100 million
euro ($112 million) will be
made available to reinforce
the current squad in order

Madrid, Juventus and FC
Barcelona.
Hoeness made it clear
that a single trophy is not
enough to satisfy the club's

will have to go beyond its
previous outlay, saying, "to
make our squad better, we
will have to buy some of the

LONDON: English football
chiefs said on Monday they
would voice concerns to
Wembley stadium over the
way Millwall fans ran onto
the pitch following Saturday's League One playoff
victory, raising fears that
such invasions are on the
rise.
The EFL condemned
"unsavoury scenes" at the
end of Millwall's 1-0 win
over Bradford City when
hundreds of fans burst past
stewards.
A small number then
taunted Bradford players as
they went to the dressing
rooms. Millwall manager
Neil Harris ordered all supporters from the pitch and
the club's players condemned the behaviour.
"The EFL will be writing
to Stuart McCall and his
Bradford team to apologise
for the situation they found
themselves in," the English
Football League said in a
statement.
"The EFL will also raise a
number of concerns with
Wembley as to how the fans
were not only able to access
the playing area but then
able to get so close to the
Bradford City team, who
showed great restraint given an incredibly challenging
and difficult situation," it
said.
"We cannot allow a set
of circumstances to exist
where the playing area becomes an appropriate place
for fans to celebrate and
Wembley, like stadiums
across the Country, have to
be prepared to deal with the
type of events that emerged
on Saturday efficiently and
effectively so as to ensure
there is no repeat."
The end-of-season playoffs are particularly emotionally charged, as teams
seek promotion in a one-off
game at English football's
national stadium. (Reuters)
