X1 ENTERPRISE SERVER COMPONENTS
Organizations that rely on significant investments in IT often need their
employees to be fluent users of many different systems. They cannot
realize the expected returns on these investments unless employees can
find the right information within the right system at the right time.
Unfortunately, the proliferation of systems and data has led to a more
complex enterprise environment that makes information search ever more
complex.
The X1 Enterprise Server consists of multiple components that collectively
deliver a unified, actionable search solution. These components can be
configured, deployed and administered using the centralized X1 Cluster
Manager.
The organization’s capacity to collect data has scaled exponentially, but the
employees’ ability to find that data has not. One recent study found that
employees spend 11 hours a week* conducting searches within multiple
systems, sometimes without effect. Remote users require equivalent search
capabilities but face security and bandwidth limitations. Typical desktop
search tools solve only part of the problem. They search local hard drives
and email, but not packaged or custom applications or relational
databases.
• The X1 Index Engine indexes all the documents sent to it by the
Connector Engine while simultaneously responding to queries from the
Federation Engine.
The X1 Enterprise Server improves productivity by providing unified,
actionable search for internal and external end users in complex,
heterogeneous environments. As the heart of the X1 Platform, the X1
Enterprise Server automatically and transparently indexes the content
housed in multiple information repositories, federates search results, and
delivers those results as quickly as the end user types. Users gain virtually
instant access to search results via a common interface, then are
empowered to take action immediately on those results.
• The X1 System Management Engine silently manages system
administration, remote installation, performance monitoring, logging
and other tasks for all the other Enterprise Server components.
Remote users can search using a Browser Client or Mobile Client. X1
supports and enhances your security policies by integrating with Windows ®
Authentication. Available Content Connectors allow the X1 Enterprise
Server to index and act on specific enterprise information systems. In
addition, X1 Server SDKs and Client SDKs enable you to create custom
content connectors and extend client actions, respectively, to meet your
organization’s unique needs.
• The X1 Connector Engine runs the X1 Content Connectors, which
authenticate and connect the Server to key corporate data repositories,
such as files, and email.
• As the glue that binds the X1 Enterprise Server together, the X1
Federation Engine receives queries from X1 Clients (or other
custom-built applications) and compiles the responses from all the
Index Engines in a cluster. Through X1 Software Development Kits
(below), developers can use the Federation Engine to embed the X1
Enterprise Server into their applications.
X1 Cluster Manager
“Dialing up” performance and capacity is as simple as drag-and-drop
using the X1 Cluster Manager. Administrators can remotely configure and
install each of the components in the X1 Enterprise Server and monitor
the performance and activities of the entire cluster. They can quickly scale
X1 to support even the largest enterprise deployments.
For example, during peak demand, an administrator wants to provide
more indexing capacity and performance without buying more hardware.
To get data into X1 faster, he could add another Connector Engine using
the drag-and-drop interface. To deliver faster query results, support more
concurrent queries, and/or index more data, he could add more Index
Engines.

X1 Content Connectors
The X1 Deployment Manager empowers the IT administrator to completely
customize and deploy the X1 Enterprise Client across the network. The
Deployment Manager works with existing software deployment processes and is
compatible with Microsoft SMS, Windows Script Host and other popular enterprise
deployment tools. Enterprise Clients can be deployed “silently” to minimize impact
on end users.
Content Connectors are client and server-side software modules that allow X1’s
indexing engine to index and act on specific enterprise information systems.

X1 eliminates inherent barriers to highly-scalable, unified search by providing
built-in tools that enable remote installation, remote management and real-time
performance monitoring of each node in the cluster.
Manage Data for Users
• Content Connector for Files (client and server) provides access to 370
different types of document and data file formats that are fully indexed by the
Enterprise Server.
• Content Connector for Microsoft® Exchange and Outlook® (client and
server) allows you to index email messages, attachments, calendar entries,
tasks and contacts from Exchange systems.

X1 Software Development Kits (SDKs)
X1 changes as your needs evolve and user requirements become more
sophisticated. Once X1 has been deployed, the Cluster Manager enables you to
add or change saved searches, action buttons, and custom menu items appearing
on the Enterprise Client, then centrally push out those modifications to any users
at any time.
X1 SDKs let users create customized client integrations and/or content
connectors. The X1 Client SDK lets customers extend and customize the X1
Enterprise Client and integrate it with other Windows desktop applications. The
X1 Server SDK lets customers extend the X1 Enterprise Server to index
additional enterprise data sources such as a proprietary workflow system or a
CRM system.
Actionable Search Results
The X1 Platform
End users’ search results are displayed as fast as they type. Each result appears in
its original format with search terms highlighted so users can decide immediately
which item they want to access, or refine results on the fly by adding more search
characters and terms. They can then act on search results without leaving X1.
Enterprise-Level Network Security
X1 Enterprise Edition maps to your organization’s existing Windows® network
security permissions, ensuring that information is secure.
• Lock down global Client settings appropriate to enterprise network environment.
• Allow only authorized files, shares, or folders to be indexed.
• Private network operation feature blocks off-network, “phone-home” traffic.

A drag-and-drop interface shows a preview of available resources, enables
dynamic configuration and simplifies remote installation of components. Remote
management utilities, including a log viewer, graphical performance monitor and a
