World Water Use

World Water Use:
Go to the UN Water site at this link: http://www.unwater.org/v2_08/statistics_use.html
1. Sketch the pie chart as seen regarding the breakdown of freshwater use.
2. Watch this short video about irrigation:
http://www.redorbit.com/news/video/education_1/1112832150/what-is-irrigation/
3. Describe the following types of irrigation. Look for additional information on line.
4. Watch this video about hydroponics:
http://www.reuters.com/video/2012/04/08/hydroponics-bring-low-cost-solution-toh?videoId=233016100
Go to the following infographic to read about the pros and cons of hydroponics.
http://livinggreenmag.com/2013/02/07/green-business/pros-and-cons-of-hydroponic-farminginfographic/attachment/image-hydroinfo/
Summarize how hydroponics works. Make a list of the pros and cons of hydroponics.
5. Go to the following website to read about industrial uses for water:
http://ga.water.usgs.gov/edu/wuin.html
What is industrial water used for?
What are the industries that use the largest amounts of water?
6. We have discussed our own personal water use. As a review, read the following about domestic
water use:
http://www.epa.gov/WaterSense/pubs/indoor.html
Arrange the following indoor activities in order of most water use - least water use: bathing
(showers + faucet), laundry, cooking and drinking, toilet flushing
Older toilets used how much water? Use the internet to search for the number of gallons used
by newer toilets.
7. Math practice!
Suppose you move into a new house and need to purchase a washing machine. You’ve heard
that the new front-loading machines use less water, but that they are more expensive. A
traditional washing machine costs $400 whereas the water efficient washing machine costs
$800. So how do you choose?
 If the average family washed 5 loads of laundry per week, how many loads does the
family wash per year?
 The traditional machine uses 150L of water per load of laundry, and the efficient model
uses 75L. How many liters would the efficient machine save per year?
 The average cost of water in the United States is $0.40 for every 1000L. How much
money would you save each year by using the more efficient machine?
 How many years would you have to own the more efficient machine before you would
save money compared with the traditional machine?
