WE HAVE A RESPOSIBILITY
TO HEALTHY LIVING
What’s Developing in Our Community
CATCH (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) is a coordinated school health program
used with preschool, elementary, and middle school-aged children. CATCH employs a holistic
approach to child health promotion by targeting multiple aspects of the school environment
and involves classroom teachers, child nutrition services staff, wellness specialist, students’
families, and the broader school community in a range of health-promoting activities for all
children.
CATCH Kids Club (CKC) is a physical activity and nutrition education program. CATCH is
composed of nutrition education materials (including snack activities) and a physical activity
component.
The goal of CATCH is to positively impact children’s health behaviors, improve the preschool
and school health environment, and influence and change preschool/school health policies and
practices in order to reduce and eliminate health risk factors and risk related behaviors of
students.
WE ARE GIVING CHILDHOOD OBESITY A RUN FOR ITS MONEY DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS
BY INCORPORATING THE CATCH CURRICULUM!!!

BUILD A HEALTHY FAMILY HOME
How will this work? The Y will support our families in their efforts to build the five
pillars to help build a healthy family home: EAT HEALTHY, PLAY EVERY DAY, GET
TOGETHER, GO OUTSIDE and SLEEP WELL.
The Pillars of a Healthy Family Home
EAT HEALTHY
At the Y, we believe that small steps lead to big changes. With
a balanced approach, even the busiest families can discover
ways to eat healthier and feel better.
PLAY EVERY DAY
Play may be the best way to prevent childhood obesity. By putting
more play into your family’s day, you will soon find yourself getting
the activity that will have your family feeling energized and strong.
GET TOGETHER
Strong relationships are one of the cornerstones of health and
well-being, and few relationships are as important as those
between adults and children. The time and attention that you
invest now will help your children learn, grow and thrive.
GO OUTSIDE
Good things happen when we unplug and go outside to play together.
Kids and adults benefit from contact with nature as well as
unstructured play and exploration
SLEEP WELL
Sometimes overlooked, sleep is a critical component of good
health. Restful sleep has been shown to have important shortand long-term health benefits for children and adults.

YMCA Healthy Family Home Tips
EAT HEALTHY
It is possible to fit vegetables and fruits into any budget. Making nutritious choices does not have to hurt your wallet. Getting enough of these foods
promotes health and can reduce your risk of certain diseases. There are many low-cost ways to meet your fruit and vegetable needs.
Being healthy is not always expensive.
Tips to budgeting fruits and vegetables to your next meal:
1. Planting your own garden
2. Purchasing store brands= savings
3. Buying in items in bulk
4. Knowing the season of your fruits and vegetables
PLAY EVERY DAY
Tag Games: Classic games that kids get into often have some sort of tag component. From basic freeze tag, sardines, to the
basic hide and go seek. Just freeze tag will get your kids running more in one game than they normally would all week long. The
more people you get involved the better, so invite the entire family. All you need is the family and a field to enjoy this simple
active workout. Don’t forget to invite excitement, motivation, and having fun. Being healthy is your focus for the family to grow
together.
Get Together
Families coming together to share a delicious recipe is an active move of accountability, to staying healthy.
Mini Ice Cream Sandwiches

5 minutes
Ready in:
35 minutes
Serving:

Health Advantages: healthy weight, heart healthy, low sodium, low cholesterol, low sat fat, low calorie.
Recipe Ingredients
4 small vanilla-snap cookies
2 tablespoons fruit sorbet or frozen yogurt
Recipe Directions:
Take 2 cookies and top it with 1 tablespoon sorbet (or frozen yogurt). Top with 2 more cookies. Freeze sandwiches for at least 30
minutes to firm up.
Go Outside
Even if you only have a small space, you can definitely grow a garden. It is fun to try new varieties, and
different fruits and vegetables every year to see what turns out best. Not only is it a fun way to teach your
kids about fruits and vegetables, but they taste so much better when you grow them yourself!
SLEEP WELL
Finish eating at least 2-3 hours before your regular bedtime
Eating or drinking too much may make you less comfortable when settling down for bed. It is best to avoid a heavy meal too
close to bedtime. Also, spicy foods may cause heartburn, which leads to difficulty falling asleep and discomfort during the night.
Try to restrict fluids close to bedtime to prevent nighttime awakenings to go to the bathroom, though some people find milk or
herbal, non-caffeinated teas to be soothing and a helpful part of a bedtime routine.
