ESTABLISHED LEADERS
LEADERSHIP
@ PLAY
You can discover more about a person
in an hour of play than in a lifetime of
conversation - Plato
PLAY Contemporary Leadership Colab (Play Colab) is a hub of thinkers and
doers invested in contemporary leadership. We create future focused leadership
initiatives and experiences that fundamentally shift the world view of people and
organisations.
Why PLAY?
All are aware that the world is changing rapidly but frameworks for thinking and
doing are deeply embedded. While technology was supposed to open up possibilities,
leaders are time poor and lack really challenging stimulus let alone a rich network of
like-minded peers to stretch their thinking. In short, they often exist in a high pressure
echo chamber. It’s no wonder some of the best leaders operate outside ‘the system’.
While leadership development is not new, the same approaches are leading to the
glacial progress and usual outcomes.
So?
PLAY Colab is playing with approaches to leadership development with focus on
leading in the new New Zealand. Contemporary leadership is not about shoehorning
all parties into cookie cutter off-the-shelf solutions. It is more customer-centric,
collaborative and organic. It is less about training and far more about building
capacity and courage to pioneer new solutions to meet new challenges.
The creation of an on going collegial support network and the collective
leadership impact of a like-minded group is not simply an added bonus
but a key part of the development approach.
Thus in 2016 we are piloting* a number of leadership experiences customised for
specific groups of commonality. While positive and intrinsic impact is assured at in
individual level, on a group level there will be a natural stepping up into larger
conversations and engagement in the future of New Zealand leadership.
*Contemporary leadership is iterative and self-directive; it is about dialogue and experimenting with new takes on old problems.
Hence we plan to move with the market and are piloting a number of different experiences costed at a pilot rate in 2016.
Learning and feedback from each wave of courses inform the next direction Play Colab takes.

LEADERSHIP
@ PLAY
How ready are you to lead in the New NZ? This course
brings together a dynamic group of experienced female
leaders to raise their level of leadership conversation past
their individual experience.
Ideal candidate
You are a female leader in an established leadership role. You have experienced
leadership coaching for an extended period and while you are keen to keep investing
time in your development you are ready for the next level. You value an extended
network of like-minded individuals but haven’t found the time to nuture it. The more
your courage grows to back yourself, the less inspired you are by current leadership
frameworks, systems and often leaders themselves. It’s time for you to step up.
Desired outcome
A more expansive leadership mindset and readiness to play in a far bigger way along
with a new extended collegial peer group that’s with you all the way.
Approach
A semi structured programme experience designed to expand the framework of
being a leader in NZ. Each module is anchored in a topic and includes a presentation
or experience that challenges broad notions of leadership and self. The Cohort is
encouraged to manage their own development as a group through the Play Colab
collaborative approach. For instance, they may initiate a development concept,
which Play Colab can execute in collaboration with the cohort or individual.
Format
Six to eight women* engage in 6 x 4-hour modules held monthly. Any further individual
coaching is arranged privately through Play Colab preferably with a recommended Play
Colab coach.
*We separate the genders in these courses for a reason. We also are running an all-male
course of the same nature. For dates and more information contact [email protected]

GUIDE
Course framework
While the framework is recommended, the facilitator will challenge the group to
consider areas of stretch and will curate the final three topics of the course to suit; this
course asks that you step up to leadership in both an individual and collective sense.
Session 1: Authentic leadership
Sandy Burgham, Wednesday 7 September, 9am-1pm
There is a call to be ‘authentic’ in leadership but what does this really mean in a
system that hasn’t changed that much? How much is ‘being yourself’ actually a risk
to your progress? Where have you got to in thinking about your purpose? This session
explores contemporary leadership and where you sit within it.
Session 2: Ego
Sandy Burgham and Jenny Devine, Thursday 6 October, 9am-1pm
How come some people and situations trigger you? How do you get a handle on this?
This session explores the concept of ego in relation to self, who you really are. This is
not about what you are doing as a leader but who you are being as a leader.
Session 3: Gender
Sandy Burgham, Wednesday 2 November, 9am-1pm
What is the truth about women in leadership? How relevant is it to single out on the
basis of gender anyway? This session explores gender diversity in leadership and
helps you form your own view on gender dynamics.
Session 4: The new NZ
Sandy Burgham, Wednesday 23 November, 9am-1pm
How well do you really know the country you are leading in? Where are the gaps that
really need to be filled in? This session considers how comfortable you are being a
global facing leader in a local market.
Session 5: Creativity
Sandy Burgham and guest expert, Wednesday 18 January 2017, 9am-1pm
What do we mean by creativity? And whats the difference between that and
innovation? You might think you are or are not creative but how do you judge this?
This session challenges your limits of creativity and explores how big an innovation
game you are playing.
Session 6: Social entrepreneurship
Sandy Burgham and guest expert, Wednesday 8 February 2017, 9am-1pm
What are the new business models shaping the world? What might this mean for
corporate social responsibility? This final session challenges you to consider the social
impact side of leadership.

FACILITATORS
Sandy Burgham, lead facilitator
Sandy works with companies and individuals interested
in innovation and reinvention for themselves, executive
teams or their brands. Most recently, Sandy was the
Director of Leadership Development for Global
Women where she was instrumental in the evolution
of the Breakthrough Leaders Programme leading both
the 2014 and 2015 cohorts of 20 and 40 senior NZ
female leaders respectively.
Jenny Devine, collaborator
Jenny’s core work is to challenge and support leaders
to rapidly develop three essential areas: greater self
insight and self-management skills, a more curious
and intuitive approach to leadership combined with
the practice of creative, strategic thinking skills. She
works as a coach and facilitator with middle and senior
leaders, individually and in group settings, across
a range of sectors.
Prior to this, Sandy held senior leadership roles in the
fashion retail, communications and research sectors
both at management and governance level.
Jenny is the Immediate Past President of the
Australasian Chapter of the International Coach
Federation and has an M.A. Consciousness Studies.
She is a member of two coaching panels – the Global
Women Breakthrough Leader’s Programme and the
State Sector Executive Coaching Panel.
Sandy is a certified leadership coach, experienced
brand strategist, social commentator/columnist/
blogger, Gender Studies university student and
wife and mother of two. Through her work in brand
marketing and social trends, plus her leadership
experiences and studies, Sandy has developed
a specialty in gender and has a particular interest
in how this pertains to leadership.
“As a leadership development professional, researcher
and student of Gender, I challenge a development
model that casts women as a special needs group
requiring extra work on their ‘confidence’. This in
itself is disempowering, flies in the face of authentic
leadership and frankly hasn’t worked. My mission is
to show women that they are the leaders not me.
Hence the experiences I strive to create are thought
provoking, challenging and totally immersive. The result
is a reframing of how you see yourself as a leader and
what your role is in contemporary leadership.”
– Sandy Burgham, 2016
Her background is in operational and project
management and consultancy in the NZ public health
sector. She has been married to Stu for many years
and has two sons.

TESTIMONIALS
“I’m careful what I recommend, and I have no hesitation recommending Sandy
and the team if you are looking to be a better version of yourself. She does things
differently. Her programmes push your thinking, removing any excuses you have for
stepping up. I was totally challenged, had a blast and built a fantastic network on her
programme. As a coach she supported me hugely and kicked my but when required
– and now there’s no going back. If you want the same-old-same-old leadership
development where you go back to your day job without making any change, then
Sandy is not the person for you – if you want to make lasting change, then definitely
read on!” – Anna Campbell, Chief People Officer Warehouse Group
“Sandy Burgham is a phenomenal leader. She helped transform my life when she
led the ‘Breakthrough Leaders Programme’ which I participated in for a whole year.
Sandy is a motivator but also a realist. She is incredibly insightful and creative so
where others see black and white, she sees colours and possibilities. Her spirit is
infectious and her desire to help others find their bliss is truly inspiring”.
– Sandra Kailahi, Freelance Journalist
“I had the privilege to work with Sandy in her capacity as Director of Leadership
Development on a 12-month programme in 2015 and as my personal coach through
this time. Sandy helped me to find who I truly am, what my Purpose in life is, she
broke into the boundaries of my thinking and opened my eyes to my true potential. I loved the way Sandy took a no nonsense approach to my lamenting on about my
confidence, and helped me to open my eyes to the world around me… I am still on
my journey of discovery and Sandy continues to amaze me with how she continues
to ask those challenging questions that raise my consciousness to new heights. Her
enthusiasm and charisma excites me to want to learn more about human behaviours
and the impacts on leadership and the world around us.”
– Wendy Paul, Director, Governance and Representation Review, Fonterra Group
“I started Working Style 30 years ago and today I’m still at the helm of this magnificent
business. Like so many business owner’s and entrepreneur’s, one enjoys such a
roller coaster ride of work and life. I have been guilty of not putting time into myself
and have been stunted in the development of my leadership style. My involvement
with Sandy has allowed me to objectively understand what I’m doing well and what
I’ve been doing poorly and it has sharpened my commitment, my passion and my
resolve to be a better leader and to grow my business accordingly. I’m a fan of
Sandy’s, so are my people. I’m much clearer in my thinking, calmer in my reactions
and I genuinely feel that I’m much easier to work with.” – Chris Dobbs, CEO
