Sabers Notch First
Win, 3-1 Over Bedford
AMHERST – The Souhegan Girls
Soccer team opened their season on
Friday August 27th against a strong
Bedford team. Led by captains
Shelby Belak, Kelsea Bemis, Taylor
Cordts, and Emily Hagen this year’s
Saber team is excited after an impressive preseason.
Five new Freshman players, Taylor Behn, Alexandra Clark, Shannon
Disco, Peyton Kent, and Madison
Learned will all play integral roles
as the team looks to play a quick, attacking style game. Our defense will
be anchored by senior goalkeeper
Holly Bourassa. Returning players
Audrey Wesson, Agnes Chretien,
Sara Christensen, Erin MacDonald,
Caroline Stone, and Tess Ryan will
be joined by new players Ashley Ireland and Mary Schmidlein to fill out
this year’s squad.
In the opening match the Sabers
set the tone early when Kelsea Bemis took an Erin MacDonald pass
and buried it in the Bedford net after only 19 seconds had elapsed. The
Sabers kept up the pressure and Kelsea Bemis notched her second goal
of the night at the 20 minute mark.
Bedford was able to score, to bring
the match to 2-1 at halftime.
The Saber girls started the second
half with a renewed energy, and kept
consistent pressure on the Bedford
defense. At the 60 minute mark,
Peyton Kent placed a great corner
kick right in front of the Bedford
net, and Madison Learned kicked
it in to notch her first career SHS
goal. The team was able to keep the
pressure on for the remainder of the
game, and secure a 3-1 win.
The coaching staff was extremely pleased with the efforts of all the
girls, who were able to work together as a team to earn a good win.

AMHERST – The Souhegan Saber Boys soccer team has wrapped
up their 1st week of training. The
annual scrimmages with Greely High School from Cumberland,
Maine were again quite successful.
Friday evening the Greely Boys Soccer team arrived and played one half
of soccer against Bishop Guertin and
one half against Souhegan. Greely
student-athletes are hosted by soccer families in the community on a
semi-annual basis. Even years Greely comes to Amherst/Mont Vernon,
and odd years SHS heads to Maine
for a similar arrangement.
On Saturday morning SHS hosted Merrimack, Manchester Central,
Con-Val, St. Thomas, Manchester
West, Milford, as well as Greely for a
scrimmage festival. Playing against
Souhegan’s girls soccer team get
off to a great start with a win vs
