Book and magazine art Margherita Oct 2013 There are references / links for most items, if not then they are probably my images/notes etc OR on my Pinterest “textile group” page. The notes below are a mixture of their words and mine with hints and steps etc. #1SILHOUETTE RECYCLED Materials: o Cardboard. Magazine pages. Scissors. Glue. Black permanent marker. 1. Fold magazine pages so that they are as skinny strips. 2. On the cardboard draw a silhouette of your favourite animal, flower or even may be the initial of your name. ((we drew on paper a scribble, coloured in parts, connected them and this became our shape – see my image below – rip paper with grain of paper and the strips will be long and more even – on the back of the paper mark size larger than image, glue strips – folded or ripped – glue ripped strips so that no background shows between strips – turn glued sheet over and cut out shape)) 3. Take a strip and glue on the silhouette. Cut surplus of strip so just shape covered. 4. Repeat until the outline is completely covered. Other options The versions I made: Left – I folded the strips Right – I ripped or cut them and left flat #2 rolled magazines (tightly or bigger looser rolls) pages glued onto canvas = very cool image pattern Cut pages to size length roll you want. You can cut roll after making and dry but it’s hard to get very accurate cuts if doing an exact placement design eg image 1. Decide what you want to show on your roll and have this part of the page facing down and the last bit to roll. Use a facetted sided pencil - it grips the paper and makes it easy to roll Here is another option for rolling paper – it looks a lot easier to control and would, I think, make longer rolls. Rolling starts at 6 min – at 10 mins for a bowl and 16min for a box http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_4hTyu7ATI Use large brush to brush glue over end of paper (if you have it in far enough then last couple of rolls will be glued and it will hold faster so you don’t need to hold roll as glue dries Don’t worry if end is glued properly as long as it holds, as the edge will be glued to your background. Paint or colour background so any gaps aren’t too obvious Draw guide lines or grid to give approx placement or keep lines straight If doing a grid like image, make grid size the length of the roll If next rolls don’t exactly fit see if you can squeeze another roll into gap Or evenly spread rolls in grid shape and when glue is dry lightly press on rolls to flatten and fill in gaps #3 Fan large and small Thin slice of book – if taken at top or bottom of book then more white will show, if you want text showing slice more to the middle area of the book Squish spine down and out to fan the pages, paint etc. as the paint dries the fan becomes set open. Tiny fans - while wet and as it dries keep scrunching up the pages, use a pin to separate pages if needed. #4 Flower Catalogue /magazine – stapled or glued spine - with at least 30 pages/pieces of paper. Scissors Glue Decide on width of curls eg wide slice or thin slice. Cut. if using stapled paper make sure the piece you're using is stapled together. You might want to add another staple for extra reinforcement. Step 1: Open the first page. Place glue on bottom of the cover page (refer to picture) and back of page to curl down. Choose options of how to curl eg.Curl 1 page at a time Curl 2 or more at a time Curl 1 lot leave 1 lot loose (either same No of pages as curl or different No) Glue curl – press curl down on pile of pages yet to curl, hold for a bit then lift curl and press on to other curls. Step 2: Repeat till all pages are glued except the cover page to the left. If using book with lots of curls, hang the curls over the edge of the table so that making the next curl is easier Sit for a ½ hr to dry. Now, glue the last page to complete the flower. Let dry overnight. Use fishing line through a loop to hang or attach to the wall. Options for lay out and No of curls Image 1) curl x 2 pieces, straight x 2 pieces Image 2) same as 1 then go back and curl 1 so edge is just laid beside other curl. The pressure of all the curls will hold them in place or use touch of glue. Using a book option Image and notes from Hamilton library book – sorry don’t have name. Book at least 300 pages Cut pages block off cover – if hard cover OR rip off front and back cover – if paper back Cut a section of the book off block – from the spine to the page edge Fold 1 page to the spine Flip to next page fold it to the spine and then the fold to the spine (so ½ size of first fold) Repeat till book finished #5 Book folding 2 fold options 1) single fold – fold so edges align at the point – point can be at any part of the page edge Spine The finished shape has a straight edge coming out from spine before it curves down 2) a double fold creased - fold so page edges align with spine = the point is crossed 1 page over the other The double fold created this shape. NOTE: to get a complete 360 degree form with creased designs, I found I needed to combine two books. Get two identical books, folded both, removed their covers and glued them together. A single book generally creates a 180 degree shape. I found this true with books up to 600 pages. Absolutely precision isn't necessary in the folding but try to keep things even and aligned. The tall cylinder was shaped by taking three pages at a time and curling them into the center. The other pages hold each in place and as you get more pages curled in, a tightness develops which keeps things together. In addition to curling I also creased the pages for some designs. A curl is the edge of the pages curved down towards or to the spine BUT the fold is not pressed sharp, it’s left as an open as a curve. A fold is same as curl but then pressed, either a little bit or hard to make a hard line fold. Hint: Keep book of unfolded pages as flat as you can so that you can curl page edge to the spine Curl edge to the spine first then line up the point you are aiming for then line up folded edge. With a double fold sometimes your page edge will need to curl up at the spine to fit it in, just curve up the edge and it will set in place when you fold the curl out of the way ready to do the next one. The cone is made by folding each page singly over at a diagonal and creased. Choose a point on the outside edge of the page where you want to bend from. Put your nail at this point then fold the page http://www.ashbeedesign.com/2012/04/altered-books-folding-part-ii.html After several weeks of creating folded forms using books I decided to start altering the book shape before I started folding. I found that books came in similar sizes and shapes, and even a large book and a small book, once folded created a form that was very similar in size. I wanted more variations Experiment 1 had me slicing a book into a 1 1/2" strip on the bandsaw and folding its long skinny pages. That created the wheel like form (one at the back of image). It is a great shape in the arrangements but it doesn't hold as even a texture as the other shapes did. The end view shows the gaps. Next, I sliced a split into a book right at its midpoint but I did not cut all the way to the binding. On this one I did a diagonal fold and crease from the center cut out. It created a wonderful double cone shape. This book had over 600 pages so it made a much denser form when done. http://www.ashbeedesign.com/2012/04/folded-books-more-ideas.html More ideas. Ceiling hanging art Materials that you will need: -1 large roll postal/craft paper from your home improvement store. Any heavy weight paper will do! -ruler pencil scissors (exacto knife or rotary blade work great too!) double stick tape Mark paper every 4″ across your paper. Move your ruler up and keep marking as you go. Then go back and connect the marks with lines. These will be your guides for cutting. Using scissors or knife (with cutting mat) cut on the lines to create several single strips of paper. Now take 1 of your strips and fold a piece of tape over the top of it. Punch a hole in the middle and attach a piece of string to it. The tape will secure the hole and keep it from ripping through. Use a pin to hang your strip of paper. Hang your strip of paper to the ceiling and measure how long you need it and trim accordingly. Tip: Take your double stick tape and cut several pieces off and set them aside for easy access! This will speed up the process and make things run a lot smoother! Now it’s time for the fun stuff! Use your remaining strips of paper and some serious brain cells to create shapes and designs to attach to your strip. Use a series of folds, creases, bends and curls to come up with some fun shapes! There is no wrong way to do it! Make sure you have some small shapes and some large ones to give it dimension. Use your pieces of double stick tape to hold down your designed shapes as you go. (the tape is not really pink! It’s just the release liner!) Once you have come up with a good shape, cut it from the rest of the roll. You can begin to add your pieces to the hanging strip of paper. Use your tape to attach them to not only to the strip of paper, but to each other. Work from either the bottom up or from the top, down. Add as many as you want and make it as full as you want until you get to the end of your strip and finish it off. find a sentence you like. Mark out the rest. Mount page on board http://www.marthastewart.com/269354/magazine-christmas-trees?backto=true&backtourl=/photogallery/easyholiday-crafts#slide_16 STEPS STEP 1 Open magazine and bend to break spine. STEP 2 Fold individual page from top right corner to inside seam spine. Fold same page from bottom right edge to gutter. STEP 3 Fold bottom triangle of each additional magazine page up, making the bottom of the tree flat. Then, fold top of all pages down to form tree shape. STEP 4 Spray-paint folded tree desired color. Immediately sprinkle glitter over wet paint. Let dry.
