Seniors
Coromandel Cricket Club’s 2005/06 season was generally disappointing. On field,
the Club’s five senior teams struggled to play competitive cricket consistently, and as
a result, none performed well enough to earn a spot in the finals. The Club’s 2 nd and
5th XI teams finished highest at the end of the minor round, in sixth position. While
the lack of success, particularly by the 1st XI, can partially be attributed to the loss of
a number of the Club’s more experienced players from the previous season,
unfortunately, the batting performances were too often below par. The generally
disappointing batting results across the club was evident by the fact that only one
century (Darren Cheek’s 105 not out) was scored during the year, and no one
managed to score 300 runs, the best being Mike Maclean with an aggregate of 276.
On a more positive note, the 2006/07 season saw the welcome return of some old
stagers, namely, David Lane and Andrew Alderson. Playing in the 2nd XI, Laney had
an excellent year finishing with 256 runs @ 25.60. Dave also took 26 wickets @
16.65 and not surprisingly collected a few trophies by season’s end, including the
Jack Hewett Award. Andrew Alderson’s return was not only a bonus for the playing
ranks, it also added a bit of colour to the Club’s social life. Aldo also provided
enormous inspiration to Dave Billett during Dave’s 24-hour run at Santos Stadium
back in October. Along with Kiwi and Darren Cheek, Aldo’s abusive encouragement
Coromandel Cricket Club Annual Report 2005/06
spurred Dave on to run an amazing 431 laps (172.747km) over the 24-hour period,
which resulted in Dave being crowned the Australian Champion. Aldo took out the 1 st
XI batting trophy with 261 runs.
Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of the year was the emergence of a number of the
Club’s younger players. It was fantastic, for example, to see Jai Koirala’s
development in the 1st XI. Jai really seized his opportunity and it was very
encouraging to see his enthusiasm, tidy bowling (10 wickets @ 19.80) and excellent
fielding. It is hoped that Jai will build on this experience and become a strong
contributor in the years ahead. Pat Needham (246 runs @ 27.33), Nick Wark (244
runs, 15 wickets @ 21.20) and Ashley Harrison (233 runs including 96 in one innings,
24 wickets @ 13.21) were three standouts among a great group of youngsters who
made a tremendous impression in senior ranks this season. Hanson Choua also did
well with the ball to finish with 20 wickets @ 15.20, as did Max Cheek (14 wickets @
12.43, 178 runs). Ashleigh ‘Bob’ Chambers was another who showed improvement,
scoring a determined 91 in one match. With more experience and practice Bob has
the ability to become a solid top order batsman for the Club.
The Club’s older contingent was not completely overshadowed by the young guns.
Grant Wannan was one of the more experienced players who had a pretty fair
season in his role as captain of the 3rd XI. Although Grant only played 8 games he
finished the season with a creditable 225 runs @ 25.00 and took 17 wickets @ 15.71.
A couple of others who did well with the bat included 2 nd XI captain, Darren Cheek
(260 runs), 4th XI captain, Mark Lemmey (227 runs) and veteran John Phillips who
took out the 5th XI batting trophy with 232 runs. In a year that he’d rather forget as
skipper of the 1st XI, Matt Laming bowled well to finish with 27 wickets at the good
average of 14.63. Daniel Jenkinson’s year was not what he would have hoped for
either, but in a losing team Jenko’s total of 21 wickets @ 21.71 was a solid effort.
Greg Kearsley once again showed his class in 2005/06 scoring 258 runs @ 36.86
including a 90. Dick Hunter also showed that there was still life in the old dog by
scoring a salubrious 77 in one innings. Dick finished with an aggregate of 199. During
the season Dick also racked up his 300th match for the Club, which was a fantastic
effort. Congratulations Dick. Not to outdone however, the wily Silver Fox, Peter
Zacpal, played his 350th game. Zaccy’s crafty bowling skills saw him finish with
another 23 wickets by year’s end at the amazing average of 10.70. On top of that,
Coromandel Cricket Club Annual Report 2005/06
Zaccy also reached the 750 wickets milestone. As KG would say, unbelievable! And
as we’ve come to expect from Zaccy, he also won another bowling trophy.
They say patience is a virtue, and it’s certainly an apt when it comes to Andrew
Magarey. Forty-four years after he commenced his career with Coromandel in 1962,
Andy registered his 5,000 run during the season. Well done Andy on a fantastic
achievement. At the other end of the scale is Darren Cheek. Rather than taking his
time, Cheeky has a reputation for preferring to get on with things, and preferably with
sixes. So it was great to see Cheeky register his 6,500th run for the Club during the
year. Congratulations Darren on this great milestone.
Juniors
Thanks to the dedicated coaching and team management efforts of Daren Cheek,
Mitchell Hodgkinson, Rowan Lloyd (and sometimes Chris Garth), the Club’s Under 13
and Under 15 teams once again highlighted the strong interest in cricket among the
youth in our community. Both teams had plenty of talent in their ranks and it will be
no surprise to see quite a few of them excelling in Coro’s senior sides in the not too
distant future. Among the better performers in the Under 13’s were Jesse Jones,
Oliver Garrett, Bren Richards, Kyle Hodgkinson-Bean, Brendan Hiscock and Jay
Sinclair. In the Under 15’s, Brad Jones, Steve Jeffries, Mark Reynolds, Ross
Thomas-Averis and Max Cheek played very well. Max Cheek and Mark Reynolds
also represented the Club in the South Junior Cricket Association team in the annual
Under-15 inter-association competition. Max scored 15 runs, took a wicket and a
catch; while Mark kept wickets and clung on to two catches and effected a stumping
with a slick piece of glovework. The juniors’ trophy presentation function was held at
the Hewett Oval clubrooms again this season.
Life Membership
If ever anyone has deserved Life Membership at Coromandel, Dave Billett is the
man! Dave has done an extraordinary amount of work for the Club over the years,
particularly in bringing the club statistics to life. The hours and hours Dave has put in
reconstructing old scorebooks has been extraordinary. Dave’s work has also resulted
in Coromandel having the first, and still the best website in the Association, and the
amount of statistical data on the site is no doubt the envy of many larger clubs. Dave
has also served on the committee for a number of years, including stints as both
Treasurer and Secretary. Dave also has the rare distinction of taking great delight in
Coromandel Cricket Club Annual Report 2005/06
winning the NACA Jacket. Cricket wise, Dave is an underrated player, although
mainly by himself. Dave has proven to be a determined and dogged fighter with the
bat and a handy bowler on occasions too. During his time at Coro, Dave hasn’t been
afraid to try his hand as captain either, and while this may not have been his forte, he
nevertheless was prepared to give it go when others wouldn’t. Thanks to Dave’s work
I am able to tell you his stats with Coromandel Cricket Club are as follows:

Social
Once again the traditional Thursday night BBQ proved to be a mainstay of the Club’s
social life in 2005/06. Thanks go to Kiwi, Zaccy and Mitch among others for their
reliable efforts with the catering and cooking duties. Mark Eglinton also did a
magnificent job in cooking up a storm on the webber at the Club’s Christmas and End
of Season Shows held at Hewett Oval. These two events were well attended by
players and their friends and families. Unfortunately however, the Club’s annual golf
day at Echunga had to be cancelled this year due to extremely hot weather
conditions. Hopefully we have better luck with the weather next season. Another
disappointing aspect of the year was the lack of numbers at the Club’s Quiz Night
held at the Blackwood Over 50’s Club. Darren Cheek did a great job as Quiz Master,
and all those who attended enjoyed a good night. It’s just a real pity that given the
effort that went into organising the night it was not better supported. Thanks go to all
those who helped organise proceedings. In particular, I like to thank Sarah Ferguson
who made an outstanding contribution in organising most of the prizes, also Kiwi
who, as usual, did a fine job behind the bar.
The Club’s senior trophy presentation dinner was held at the Yangtze Restaurant in
Blackwood. Co-hosted by Darren Cheek and Mitch Hodgkinson the night turned out
to be a relatively subdued affair no doubt reflecting the Club’s pretty poor showing
during the season. Unfortunately however, it was compounded by the fact the
attendance was significantly below expectations, including the absence of a number
of the trophy recipients. As a consequence, it was disappointing way to wrap up the
year.
Coromandel Cricket Club Annual Report 2005/06
Administration
On an administrative level, the Club was well served by the dedicated efforts of its
committee in 2005/06. In what was probably a first in the Club’s history, this season a
female took on an key role in the running of the Club. JeriLee Cheek volunteered to
be Treasurer after no one at AGM was prepared to do the job. JeriLee is to be
congratulated for her generosity and dedicated efforts, as is Darren Cheek who
largely took on the responsibility of collecting player payments on behalf of JeriLee.
Mark Eglinton did an excellent job as Secretary in 2005/06, despite the fact that his
work meant that he was sometimes interstate. Mitch Hodgkinson, in his second
season as Vice President, once again proved to be a great worker for the Club, and I
very much appreciated Mitch’s efforts again this season, particularly during the first
half of the season when I seemed to be spending most of my life in a hospital bed.
Sadly, Mitch has indicated that he will not be continuing on the committee again next
season. On behalf of all members, I would like to thank Mitch for all the work he has
done over the last few years. However, I’m sure Mitch’s efforts will not be completely
lost to the Club, and that he will continue to make a great contribution in a non-official
capacity. Rowan Lloyd did a huge amount of work behind the scenes again this
season. Rowan is a fantastic clubman and he can always be relied on to help out.
Kiwi returned to committee this year and proved to be an excellent contributor, as
was Andrew ‘Sarah’ Ferguson in his first year. Kiwi and Sarah are to be commended
for their efforts in trying to organise an alternative drinking venue, namely the bowling
club. Unfortunately these arrangements didn’t work out, however, by season end it
appears that Kiwi and Sarah have converted a few extra Coro players to lawn bowls.
Apart from the regular business that occupied the committee’s time, this season the
committee identified the need to commence the planning process for the Club’s 150
anniversary due in 2012. At this stage Rowan Lloyd has led the way though his
research about the Club’s early history with the assistance of Maggie Ragless from
the Mitcham Council’s history unit. Plans to establish a ‘150th working party’ were
also agreed by the committee, although the members of that group are a yet to be
settled. The committee also spent some time discussing the need to continue
improving, and where possible simplify, the club’s management procedures and
document our existing knowledge. As part of that discussion, it was agreed the Club
should aim to develop a Strategic Plan that outlines exactly what the Club goals are
and how we intend to achieve them. While the drafting of a Plan is still in preliminary
Coromandel Cricket Club Annual Report 2005/06
stages, it is anticipated that all members will have an opportunity to have there say
about its content in due course.
Finances
This year the Club recorded a surplus of $628.15. While the positive result is to be
welcomed, and thanks go to Jerilee for her efforts in this area, members need to be
reminded that this follows on top of three years of consecutive losses, which saw the
Club’s funds depleted by $8,494.84. Clearly strong prudential management of the
Club’s finances needs to be maintained to ensure that the Club remains viable into
the future. As was the case last season, this year’s Audit Report has identified the
need for the Club to consider either increasing membership fees and/or fundraising.
Given the poor outcome from this year’s Quiz Night, perhaps the time has finally
come for the Club to seriously review player fees. A considered budget process
needs to become a core part of all the Club’s planning activities rather than an addon to other discussions. Whatever is decided, the vigilant collection of player fees
demands high priority by the incoming committee.
Sponsorship
One area of the Club that is often overlooked is the generous support the Club
receives from its sponsors. Once again, Coromandel Cricket Club was fortunate to
have had the support of a number of sponsors in 2005/06. Collectively they directly
added over $800 to Club funds. On top of that they variously made available
vouchers available for awards totalling many hundreds of dollars. On behalf of the
Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following organisations for their
support during the past year, and encourage all members to support these sponsors
where they can:

Freer Parker,

Press Met Tooling,

R.J. Cole & Partners,

Pig Iron Forge,

Aussie Glass,

Belair Meats,

Adelaide Cricket Warehouse,

Blackwood Community R.S.L.,

New World Lifestyle Group,
Coromandel Cricket Club Annual Report 2005/06

ODV Accountants & Financial Services, and

Riverbank Houseboats.
The Club was also fortunate to have the support of many local, and not so local,
traders who kindly donated a range of prizes and vouchers for the Club’s Quiz night
held in March. Their support was also very much appreciated.
Looking Forward
As I highlighted this time last year, the club’s growth in recent years continues to
present both opportunities and challenges. While Coromandel Cricket Club has been
very well served by its various volunteer committees over the years, the competing
demands on our time these days often makes it difficult to find and retain those
volunteers. But of course things don’t just happen around the Club without that effort.
One of the main challenges facing the Club is trying to get enough members to
actually commit themselves to undertake the various tasks that are necessary to run
the Club. While it is not always easy, it can be fun and very rewarding, particularly
when things work out as planned. I therefore urge all members, particularly some of
the younger brigade, to consider whether they still want to be playing cricket at
Coromandel in 5 or 10 years time, and if so, think how they might be able contribute
to make Coromandel the great and successful cricket club that we all desire. Just
turning up to play on Saturday’s is not an option. Neither is it a recipe for winning
matches or playing well.
By now most of you will already know I have decided that I will not be standing again
as President, or serving on the committee for that matter. While I leave the job with a
degree of frustration about not having achieved all the things that I set out to do over
the past two seasons, I am also very much looking forward to having a break from
the responsibilities of organising (or at least trying to organise) things for the cricket
club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who’ve assisted me during
the last few years, particularly during this last season when I was out of action due to
ill health. Finally, I trust that everyone will get right behind the new leadership team,
whoever they may be, and hope that 2006/07 is a great year to be at Coro!
Good luck to everyone in the season ahead.

Captain’s Report
2005/2006 the season that was……..
At the start of the 2005/2006 season, the outlook for the coming year was promising, despite the fact that the
club had lost the services of Russell King, Dave Magarey and Tristan Graham, and that Darren Cheek had
stepped down from the A-grade to take on the role of B-grade captain.
I felt at the beginning of pre-season that the A-grade would still field a very strong side and stand a good chance
of playing off in the finals, with players of the ilk of Jenkinson, Alderson, Coulter and Eglinton remaining, to name
a few. Unfortunately, my visions weren’t to be, with some of the more experienced players missing weeks
throughout the season for various reasons, and the weather playing havoc with conditions.
Our start to the season left a lot to be desired with a very disappointing showing with the bat in our first hit. I
think this may have put some negative thoughts into players’ minds and we never really recovered any batting
form for the rest of the summer.
An encouraging aspect from this season was our performances against some of the better sides, including the
perennial powerhouses of the competition in Glenelg and Western Youth and the eventual grand finalists
Morphettville Park. However this was offset by our poor showings against other sides that, on paper, I
considered we should have beaten. Unfortunately for the majority of the season we did not play competitive
cricket for two consecutive weeks and this resulted in us having to recover from a bad situation most weeks.
Although we did not win as many games as we expected, we were able to learn a lot about some of the younger
players coming through the ranks and to establish a foundation for the next few years. I was impressed with the
efforts and performances of young players like Jai Koirala, who played all season and was a great character to
have in the side, Nick Wark, who made a fantastic debut and really showed he belonged in the A-grade, and Pat
Needham and Bob Chambers, who both showed they were more than capable of playing at that level in the
years to come. The future of our club looks to be in great hands with players of this calibre coming through!
I would like to congratulate the A-grade trophy winners from the past season - Daniel Jenkinson, Andrew
Alderson, Andrew Magarey and Jai Koirala. At various times during the season these guys showed what was
required for us to play competitive cricket and be consistent.
In my opinion, from an overall club perspective, the 2005/2006 season was not acceptable given that no side
made the finals. I believe both from an A-grade perspective and from the club perspective we need to address
this and ensure we can use the lessons of last season to improve in seasons to come. I consider that next
season we need to make some changes to improve our results and in view of this I would like to offer to stand on
the Committee to assist with improving our great club.
I would like to thank outgoing President Mark Wicks for his support over the last couple of years and also the
other Committee members for their support. I would like to thank Darren Cheek for his input last year as Bgrade captain and his development work with the juniors. I would also like to thank the other captains and
Richard Hunter in his role as chairman of selectors and I look forward to working with them again next year.
Let’s make 2006/2007 our greatest season yet!!
