Season 2008/09
Monday 13/10/08
New this week!!
League Tables…I
have included the latest League Tables for
all teams, which I hope meets with your approval! I will aim to
update every 4 weeks~remember they are posted on the SAL
website, along with all results, fixtures and links to other Clubs &c.
The site is managed by Andy Copeland, (now back with us!) and is
well worth a look.
F.A. Charter Standard…Although
it may not mean much to
many of you, this new initiative from the FA is intended as an
indication of “Excellence” as to the running and management of any
football club, both off and on the field. The SAL is part of a pilot
scheme, and your Committee Members are very keen that we
achieve this prestigious status (which we hope will be soon!) as it
will be potentially key to any possible funding and the future of
the club, long after we old ‘uns have hung our boots up! Watch this
space for developments!
….and finally!
Another reminder to contact PAUL AYERS ON 07908 046258. if
you have any issues regarding selection or are unable to play. Paul is Chairman of
Selection and as such any and all changes MUST go through him AND NO-ONE
ELSE!! If you can’t play LET HIM KNOW!

on 07932 712701. Match reports are to be emailed to [email protected] by

Match Results and Reports!
Not the best of weeks for the Club! The 4’s and 8’s must share the honours,
with good victories, let’s hope for better times next Saturday!
Ist XI v BB Eagles….Lost 0-1
The Vamps star mini bus turned up at Coppets Road but the star players didn’t. After arriving at
Barclays 20 minutes before kick off. the boys rushed out and warmed up very quickly. We
started well but on a very small pitch we could not finish. Ayres made a great run and got
bought down by the goalkeeper penalty. Up stepped the skipper Pidgeon but the keeper
guessed the right way, so we went in 0-0. Second half saw us not play too well but ran our
hearts out, that is all the Gaffer asks for, true Vampire spirit! With all our pressure B.B Eagles
nicked a goal with ten minutes left. Last ten Vamps threw everything at B.B with Gregory,
R.Pidgeon and Crosby going close. Unlucky boys chins up and let’s put it right next week! Boys I
am proud of you Gaffer. Vamps had three players booked one deserved. Gregory for going in to
win the ball and got booked. 3rd booking T. Pidgeon, a man who wears the badge on his heart,
gets booked for a tackle which was not nasty. Then you have a player who lunges at a Vampire
two footed and does not get spoken to. Slightly disappointed at opposition for trying to get
players booked. Thank you to ref Steve Lomas for listening to me after the game, we had a
long chat and I appreciate that. It is a shame that players are thinking about suspensions
instead of a tackle. Love you all, Gaffer.
2nd XI v Old Actonians…;Lost 1-6 Scorer; ?
No report this week, following the resignations of Nick & Roy from their respective positions~more
info. to follow!
3rd XI v Polytechnic;
The result and outcome of this match appears to be subject to SAL scrutiny. The 3’s table position
may also be inaccurate as a consequence~~more news later!!
4th XI v Old Owens 6th XI…Won 3-2; Scorers; Harvey M (2), Graham
After last week’s first league win of the season the 4s travelled up to leafy Potters Bar with 10 men to play bottom
of the table Old Owens. Well, actually 8 men turned up as the Harvey brothers – who live closest to the ground –
decided to have an extended lie-in and a late lunch before eventually joining us! With such a lack of manpower,
fearing the worst, L. Green took out his bag of sweets and used his cheeky smile to lure an unsuspecting 15 year
old from the swings to play up for us. Starting with 8 men (L. Green decided to watch the Harveys get changed
while we ran our nuts off) was never going to be easy, but we held firm until the late comers made their way onto
the pitch. With a full 11, we soon established a commanding presence and the first goal came after a D. Harvey
throw-in sent his brother clear on goal to smash one home, 1-0. The second came soon after, when P. Graham
had amazing vision (he usually has double vision!) and launched an Alonso style shot from the half-way line to lob
Old Owens keeper. Pure quality. We continued to dominate and maintained the pressure until we got the third
when J. Buzac set-up M. Harvey who skipped past their keeper to slot another one home. We could easily have
had another four goals but just could not put the ball in the back in the net. Minutes before the end of the half,
Old Owens managed to pull one back from a corner when some slack defending let one of the shortest players on
the pitch have a free header. In the second half, Old Owens made some changes sticking their nimble youngsters
up-front to test the experience of the old and wise back four. They were up for it and they had decent spell with
some good passing play that resulted in a penalty after yours truly needlessly pole-axed one of their strikers. Up
stepped there striker and down went Birthday Boy Donaghey - who at the tender age of 36 dived the right way to
make the save of the day. A few minutes later, we should also have had a penalty after M. Harvey was caught in
the box after trying to dribble the ball into the back of the net, but for some strange reason the ref. decided that it
was a fair challenge?!? Hmmmm. For the rest of the game the Old Owens fought hard, and managed to get a late
consolation when their striker volleyed home after a super long goal kick. We finished 3 -2 with another three
points in the bag. Well done, lads! Lets continue this fine form and make sure we are all on time for next week’s
cup game away to an undefeated Old Owens 4th X1.
5th XI v Old Manorians 5th XI…Lost 4-5; Scorers ??
John Bean (ref) asked me to mention that in last week’s match there was another example of great
sportsmanship, this time from Old Owens after a Vamps player inadvertently picked the ball up
thinking John had blown when it was another whistle. John awarded a pen (having no choice) and
the Owens player deliberately tapped it meekly to our keeper---well done Owens!!
It looked to be a great saturday afternoon for a game of football, blue sky, sun was out, a home
cup tie, so a good Vamps start would be great. Once we kicked off, 30 minutes into game we
were somehow 3-nil down...bugger!!!! But with the 5th team spirit we did not drop our heads,
we were playing some good football and created many chances and to be fair should have
been level. We did have a penalty just before half time. We scored from the spot, which was
smashed in, plus Old Manorians keeper got injured and had to come off. Second half started
fantastic two quick goals and back to 3-3. As the game carried on we were all over them, but
once again conceded another goal. Vamps responded straight away back level 4-4. Looking
like the game was going into extra-time a late goal by the visitors meant we lost the game 4-5.
But Vamps should be proud of the performance and spirit we showed. Unlucky lads!!
6th XI v Old Esthamians 4th XI…Lost 0-2.
~~NO REPORT RECEIVED~~
7th XI v Alexandra Park 6th XI..Lost 1-2; Scorer; Roberts B
It was another nice day for football, the 7’s started well but lately, as per usua,l yet again
conceded an early goal which saw us even more determined to get back on level terms. That
came ten minutes from half time with a nice lob from B Roberts which gave us a boost. After
half time we started believing in ourselves and came out fighting. We kept Ally Pally at bay and
had the majority of possession. We gave away a free kick with about twenty minutes to go
which saw AP go 2-1 up. We never give up the chase and the last ten minutes saw us go down
to ten men as Adam the keeper came out worst in a fifty -fifty ball seeing him watch the rest of
the game from the side line. We wish him a speedy recovery and special mentions go to Johnny
Winchester, Micky Hitch and Adam Wiltshire who helped us out, well done lads! We did our
best with the tools we had… it didn’t help I was upfront with my son!!
8th XI v Old Parks 7th XI…Won 3-3 (4-1 on Pens.) Scorers; Ali (2),
Dean….Pens, Ali, Jay, Dean, Gibbon
A seasoned and gritty OldParks turned up on a sweltering day expecting a stroll against the old
buggers only to be faced with exhuberant youth (+ a smattering of the old brigade)! On a big
pitch Vamps started well and deserved their lead through the impressive Ali, but Old Parks
showed their fighting spirit, equalising shortly afterwards. With our final ball not quite as it
should be and with Parks playing a typically robust game they moved into a 3-2 lead, Ali having
bagged his brace, but their 3rd was a peach too in fairness. Frustration at hearing the ref’s
whistle and a string of impressive saves from their man-mountain keeper was giving the gallery
a nervous time but it was the tireless Dean breaking forward that grabbed our equalizer and in
effect taking the game to penalties. Well-done to Dan in goal for saving 2 and to Long-Un for
calmly slotting the winner after all other Vamps pens were converted (Pidge please take note!!)
MOM goes to Roy Lucien, enjoying himself and rolling back the years!! Great win boys, they
don’t come much tougher than Old Parks, trust me!!
