WHERE THERE’S SMOKE
Written by Robin Lovell and David Miller
Published by Lothian Children’s Book, 2007
› Target Audience: 3 – 8 year olds
› Resources required:
› Where there’s smoke
› Large art paper, scissors and plenty of glue
› Children collection of found objects e.g. fabric, different textured paper, cotton wool,
plastic pieces
› Blurb: One hot summer day a bushfire threatens Bodie’s farm and time is running out. Will
his home be saved? Firefighters come to fight the fire.
ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS:
› Read Where there’s smoke to the children.
› Ask the children to create a collage using all their found objects to depict themselves
helping during a bushfire. For example, they may be helping pack the car to leave, or
putting their pet somewhere safe, or raking up leaves, or be a firefighter driving the truck or
holding the hose, or making a cake for the firefighters.
› Have the children talk about why they chose to help their friends and family in the way they
did in the picture they made. What were they doing? Would it be fun or hard work? Would
you do it with other people or by yourself? How does it make them feel?
