5th ANNUAL KIRKLAND LAKE MILE OF GOLD INVITATIONAL APRIL 28-30 HOSTED BY THE KIRKLAND LAKE AQUATIC CLUB KIRKLAND LAKE MILE OF GOLD ~ A BRIEF HISTORY ~ Kirkland Lake, Ontario is a gold mining town. Miners from this small town have produced millions of ounces of gold over the past 100 years. At one time there were 7 gold mines along a one mile strip, hence the term “Mile of Gold”. As the story goes, when the main road in the town was first being built, construction workers were instructed to collect waste rock from one of the local mines to use as fill. However, instead of loading waste rock, the workers accidently took rock which had not yet been processed and contained high grade gold ore. By the time the error had been discovered the rock had been laid and the road built, it was too late to get the rock back. From that day on, it really was a “Mile of Gold”. We welcome teams to attend this one-of a-kind swim meet. Athletes will not just compete for gold coloured medals and win prizes, but rather, the opportunity to participate in an exciting 1 mile relay race and win an ounce of real pure gold! A second ounce of gold will be awarded to the club with the highest total FINA points for 15/over age group No other meet like this in the world.
