The Future of Carpet-Backing Dispersions
Make the move with uS:
CHOOSE PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY
It is now over three decades since
WACKER introduced vinyl acetateethylene-based waterborne polymer
dispersions to the carpet industry.
Since then, we have continued to
develop and revise our products to
ensure they continue to meet the
challenges of an ever-changing
market. VINNAPAS® VAE technology
will remain the established technology
due to its availability, predictability
and competitive price. We invite you
to be part of that future.
VINNAPAS® is a registered trademark of Wacker Chemie AG.

One Solution for a Wide Range
of Applications
VAE technology is a solution for a broad
range of products. WACKER specializes
in dispersions based on vinyl acetateethylene copolymers (VAE copolymers).
Today, WACKER’s VINNAPAS® portfolio
caters to the varied and changing needs
of the carpet, paper, adhesive, architectural coating and nonwoven industries.
A Proven Innovation Leader
At WACKER, innovation is integral to
our personality. WACKER scientists first
developed VAE technology in the 1960s
and our leading position in that development continues today. Mindful of the
importance of continued technological
advancement, WACKER invests approximately four percent of sales revenue into
research and development. In the last
four years, we have applied for patents
on approximately 500 inventions and
these will add to the already existing
patent portfolio, which already comprises
5,000 patents with an additional 2,900
pending.
Global Expertise, Local Focus
As a WACKER customer, you will benefit
from the experience of a global network.
In addition to over 100 subsidiaries and
sales offices, WACKER operates 21
technical centers and five manufacturing
plants across Europe, the Americas and
the Asia-Pacific region. We have established WACKER ACADEMY facilities to
encourage knowledge sharing on every
continent. While global in scope, WACKER
is local in focus and has developed indepth understanding of each market’s
needs and challenges.
Partner with WACKER
When you partner with WACKER you gain
admission to the WACKER ACADEMY in
your local region. We established these
pioneering institutions to disseminate the
very latest ideas and technologies to our
partners in the market. These institutions
offer market-specific product training
and interdisciplinary seminars. Regional
WACKER ACADEMY laboratories are
designed to assist you with applications
and product modifications, as well as to
enhance technical knowledge sharing
between companies.

VAE technology for carpets
Supplying Customers with Decades of Excellent Quality,
While Continuously Enhancing Performance.
Historically, products based on VAE
copolymers have enjoyed their share of
the general carpet adhesive industry.
The incorporation of ethylene into the
VINNAPAS® carpet backing dispersion
internally plasticizes the products and
results in inherently high adhesive
strength that maintains good flexibility.

Unique Properties
The basic structure of VAE copolymers
allows for an optimization of flexibility and
strength, which is required for carpet
backing.
Persuasive Values
Today’s VINNAPAS® VAE dispersion
polymers give tuft bind and delamination
values that compete well with styrenebutadiene (SB) latexes. Additionally,
backings made with VINNAPAS® dispersions retain their original flexibility.

SB Latex
Less Combustible
VINNAPAS® carpet backing dispersions
have an advantage in fire retardancy. The
figure above shows a comparison of the
fire retardancy properties of VINNAPAS®
VAE versus a typical carpet backing SB
latex. The limiting oxygen index (LOI) test
indicates the flammability of materials by
measuring the minimum concentration
of oxygen that supports combustion in
a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. The
material with the higher index shows a
greater resistance to burning. The results
indicate that the equivalent fire retardancy
can be obtained with VINNAPAS® dispersions at lower cost as compared with SB
latex because the VINNAPAS® dispersion
formulation has significantly less aluminum
trihydrate (ATH). The VAE system can attain
the same degree of fire retardancy with up to
150–200 parts less ATH in the formulation.
Environmental Impact
Increasing technological demands require
today’s raw materials for carpet applications to provide benefits beyond reliability
and high-performance. Additionally, more
attention is being paid to the materials’
environmental impact.
Globally, solutions with minimal VOC are
growing in importance, and this trend increasingly affects the carpet market, too.
Carpet manufacturers want to produce
carpet that satisfies the requirements of
strict low indoor air quality certifications
such as Green Label Plus (Carpet and Rug
Institute, US), GUT (Gemeinschaft umweltfreundlicher Teppichboden, EU) and GB18587
(Indoor decorating and refurbishing materials, China), to name just a few.
With the above certifications in mind,
WACKER has optimized the manufacturing process of its VINNAPAS® VAE
dispersions for carpets. WACKER’s carpet
backing dispersions enable the formulation of carpet adhesives with VOC levels
that can meet strict environmental regulations.
Optimized Operations
VINNAPAS® VAE technology’s unique
properties and characteristics not only
offer good performance, they enable
cost-competitive formulations that meet
regional carpet certification requirements
around the globe.

The time to make the move is now!
Availability and supply security, have
contributed to many carpet manufacturers around the world making the
move to the stability and reliability of
VINNAPAS® VAE technology.
Increased popularity
Currently, the use of VAE dispersions in
carpet backing is increasing dramatically.
Although VAE copolymer dispersions
have been used as binders in carpet
backing formulations for over thirty years,
the historic lower price of SB latexes
had limited the use of VAE technology
to carpet constructions that are more
special in nature, e.g., PVC-backed tile
pre-coat, zero 4-PCH carpets and others.
However, changes in regional feedstocks
(oil vs. gas) have had a global impact,
which has created instability in SB latex.
A cost-effective solution
Since vinyl acetate and ethylene are produced from both oil and natural gas, their
supply has not been restricted, unlike BD,
which is primarliy manufactured from oil.
This has helped make VAE copolymers
more cost competitive and predictable
in price. Consequently, the combination
of availability and product features has
made VINNAPAS® VAE technology an
attractive alternative to commonly used
styrene-butadiene dispersions.
6
Why make the move?
The unstable global pricing of SB latex
means carpet manufacturers are unable
to factor-in a consistent price for a basic
component. VINNAPAS® VAE technology,
however, is not affected by the same
feedstock dynamics, which makes it a
reliable alternative for carpet manufacturers.
When you make the move to VINNAPAS®
VAE technology, you can be assured
WACKER’s global and local know-how
is there for you every step of the way
to ensure the optimal performance of
your production process.
