UST vows to support UN MDGs, launch advocacy campaign
Selected student organizations of the University of Santo Tomas, in partnership with the UNITED NATIONS will
launch its first ever Millennium Development Goals (MDG) advocacy campaign series, Dec. 10-12 at the school’s
Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.
The UST Artlets Economic Society and the UST Journalism Society will spearhead the three-day event dubbed
USTand up! Speak Out! Growl Out for UN MDGs.
With the theme, “No Excuses to Promises,” the event aims to establish the awareness of the Thomasians on the
different social issues ravaging the world as summed up in UN MDGs . Also, the activity aims to equip the youth of
being able to participate in the efforts of the UN, the government and different social sectors in responding to global
challenge of achieving the eight goals by 2015.
USTand up! Speak out event covers series of activities that will kick off with the opening of the “Faces of Poverty”
Photo Exhibit at the St. Raymund’s Building on Dec 10. The Photo Exhibit, organized by the UST JOURNSOC, will be
a collection of photographs contributed by the students of the Faculty of Arts and Letters on the actual struggles of
the people living in poverty.
Representatives from the UN, the National Economic Development Authority and the Congress will discuss their
contributions on the country’s commitment to achieve the MDGs in the AES Table Talk Series titled Let’s Talk MDG’s:
A Student Primer. This event, in cooperation with the Junior Philippine Economics Society (JPES) and the Philippine
Council for Economics Students (PhilCES) will give the students an overview on the Millennium Declaration and the
eight goals targeted by the countries worldwide.
In line with the celebration of the International Human Rights Day, a symposium and a film showing on Holocausts
and the human rights will take place at the Tan Yan Kee Student Center Lobby. Ms. Agnes Shari-Aliman, of the UN
Information Centre (UNIC), will talk about significance of the lessons from the Holocaust to the current global
perspective. In line with this, the UST Journsoc will also launch the on-the-spot essay writing contest titled
“Remembering Holocaust.” Winner of this contest will represent the Philippines in the International Youth Congress in
Jerusalem, Israel on Jan. 27-29.
On December 11, a CINEMAFORUM on poverty and social issues concerning the MDGs will be the culminating
activities on the second day. Film documentaries produced by the Thomasian Cable Television (TOMCAT) will
highlight the event. Ms. Suneeta Mukherjee, head of the UN Advocacy Team, will grace the activity as she talks about
the importance of the society in shaping up the fulfillment of these goals.
Different social sectors including the Philippines Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the UN Youth Association of
the Philippines (UNYAP), representatives from the civic society organization and the media, will talk about their
contribution in response to the global challenge in a symposium dubbed MDGs’ Best Practices. This event, which will
mark the end of the three-day activity Dec. 12, will also take a glimpse on the success of the in the recent STAND
UP-SPEAK OUT campaign in the country. Ms. Ruth Georgett, Associate Coordinator for the UN Resident
Coordinator, will lead the recognition of the Thomasians who contributed in the success of the event.
Aside from the series of symposiums, the UST Asian Studies Society and the Political Science Forum also vowed to
support the USTand up Speak Out event by organizing a freedom wall and hand paint exhibit on the MDGs.
Dr. Cristina Castro-Cabral, Assistant to the Rector for Student Affairs & Dr. Armando de Jesus, Dean of the Faculty of
Arts and Letters, also extended their support to the event organizers.
The AES and UST JournSoc see success of the event as a jumpstart for a long-term but significant endeavor to lead
