Principal’s Message
Over the course of the school year, we are excited to be offering a program called MindUP™. MindUP™ is an award winning
classroom-based social emotional learning (SEL) program designed to enhance a child’s self-awareness, social awareness,
focused attention, self regulation, problem solving, pro-social behaviours (helping, sharing, and cooperating), and positive
human qualities, such as happiness, optimism, and altruism. Research has shown that students who participate in SEL
programs enhance their overall learning, and the resulting positive behaviours lead to lower dropout rates, a decrease in
anxiety and depression rates, a decrease in classroom conduct problems and increased academic success.
MindUP™ was created to help children understand the ways their brains work as well as how their thoughts and feelings
affect their behaviour. It has four goals:
1. To foster mindful focused awareness;
2.
To increase positive human qualities, such as empathy, perspective-taking, helpfulness and kindness;
3.
To increase optimism and well-being, and
4.
To foster a cohesive, caring classroom climate.
The MindUP™ program is informed by the latest scientific research in the fields of cognitive neuroscience, social emotional
learning, and positive psychology.
Through a series of simple lessons, students learn strategies to calm their minds, focus their attention and become more
aware of themselves, others and their environment. Each lesson also teaches students about their brain (anatomy and
function), and how they can positively influence their own brain development.
We hope that as your child experiences MindUP™ in the classroom, you will talk with them about what they are learning
about focusing attention, social emotional learning, and brain development.
If you would like to learn more about the research around Social and Emotional Learning, please visit www.casel.org If you
have further questions about the program or would like more information, please feel free to contact me.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Head lice has been reported at RMES. To prevent further spread please check your child’s hair and scalp
carefully.
STEP 1:
STEP 2:
STEP 3:
STEP 4:
STEP 5:
Find a comfortable well-lit spot
Check the hair from the scalp to the end of the hair strand. First, look at the
hair at the back of the neck, behind the ears and above the forehead. Then,
check the rest of the head.
You are looking for live lice and/or eggs. Nits (eggs) are attached to hair close
to the scalp. Nits are white to light brown in colour and may be confused with
dandruff. Nits are firmly attached to the hair and do not move unless you slide
them down the hair strand.
If you find a louse or nit, check all household members. Treat only those who
have head lice or nits, following Option A or B. (see attached)
Let the school know if your child has head lice or nits.
Remember:
Should you find signs of head lice infestation, please begin treatment at once. Children with head lice should
be kept home until treated. They may return to school once the infestation has been completely removed and
no nits (eggs) are present.
 Make weekly head checks part of your routine.
 Scratching and itching of the scalp may be a sign of head lice.
 If your child has long hair, keep it tied back.
Please contact your nearest Health Centre for further information (1-800-661-0329).
Yours truly,
Ms. S. McGale
