
What causes leaks in stern tubes, tunnel thrusters and
CPPs?





Insufficient lubrication of seals during dry docking
Oil film pressed out under stand still
Fishing lines pulled into seals
Sand and other impurities damaging seals when passing
through shallow waters (eg, harbors and rivers)
What do ABCON SL products do?


Specifically designed teflon particles form a barrier in the gap
between the rubber seal and shaft surface
Other additives improve the quality of rubber seals

Lost 100 L/day in May 2006
After 24 hours of adding 10% ABCON-STERN TUBE
SL, leakage was reduced to 2-3 L/day
Vessel continued to sail without further repair (for
1.5 years) until planned dry docking in late 2007,
where new seals were installed

Bow thruster began leaking in November 2007
 ABCON-THRUSTER SL was added and leakage
stopped

Additional benefits seen
 Vibrations before were 3.7 mm/sec
 Vibrations after were 2.8 mm/sec
 Vibrations a newly reconditioned 2.2 mm/sec
Shows a layer of teflon has been added to shaft

March 2008: scheduled dry docking
 Thruster motor shaft bevel was worn, hardened gear tooth surface
was compromised and iron content in lube oil was exceeding limits
 Rolls Royce could not supply replacement shaft for 8 months
 ABCON-THRUSTER+ and ++ was added (40 L total volume)
 Teflon particles permanently adhered to surface of gear teeth, provided lubrication
which reduced gear friction and iron levels in lube oil to allowable limits

January 2009: ABCON visits Rolls Royce in Aalborg
 Rolls Royce confirms ferry has not ordered spare parts to date

March 2013: no replacement parts ordered since as:
Ferry S/I reported bevel continues to function well
• Since iron level is acceptable, class approved continued operation

We have had the great pleasure of using your products for our stern
tubes, tunnel thrusters and conventional seals. I am planning to dock
Princesse Benedicte in week 44-45 at Orskov Shipyard, but I do not
intend to open the stern tube stuffing boxes as they are very tight. We
have gone from 2 years to 4 year-intervals between overhauls.
With kind regards,

Yesterday we received your product. I must confess I am on the verge of
being religious. For more than 16 years I have worked in various ships,
fishing and off shore, but never have I seen anything more effective. After
3-4 hours the leakage had so to say gone.
Alternatively we had to go to dry dock plus 6 weeks waiting time for a
new stern tube seal.
Med vennlig hilsen / Best regards
