Traveling with Kids Made Easy with These
Helpful Tips
Traveling with kids can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be. Ensure a smooth and
enjoyable travel with our travel check-list:
1. Kids don’t fare well with traveling long distances, so allow some rest time
in your schedule. Also, consider budget. Some countries have a high exchange rate, so plan accordingly if traveling with a large family.
2. Pack the essentials first! Medications, toiletries, books, snacks, games, sippy cups, etc. If traveling with an energetic toddler, pack a new toy or a toy they haven’t seen in a while. This will be your saving grace should the going get tough.
Train your brain with our
fun, challenging games
and puzzles
3. Set your kid’s travel expectations. If they have never traveled long distances before, explain the process to them. If it will be a long car-ride, let them know in advance, bring plenty of activities for them to do, and allow for frequent stops and rest breaks. Likewise, it may be wise to pack an
anti-nausea medication for car sickness.
Rights &
Responsibilites
4. Be realisitc when planning your trip’s itinerary. Avoid cramming too much into one vacation, likewise, too much free time can allow for a boring trip. Balance activities with long lunch breaks and consider leaving afternoons open for down time before dinner.

responsibilies as a Kool

Healthy Routines in 2014: Think Small
When it comes to being healthy, thinking
big isn’t the answer. Instead, think small.
Over time, it’s the little things that make
a big difference!
1. Move as much as you can. Park in the back of the parking lot. Take a walk after dinner. Do jumping jacks during TV commercials. Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
2. Go outside! Being outside and
getting some sunshine is good for your health and your mood.
3. Spending time outside can even help some kids focus better.
4. Laugh more. Laughter has numerous health benefits. Go and spend time with a funny friend or watch a movie that you know will make you laugh. Doctor’s orders!
5. Get eight hours of sleep every night. Regularly losing a couple hours of sleep a night can lead to depression, make you gain weight, and even increase your risk of high blood pressure.
6. Eat the rainbow. Eat colorful fruits and veggies. They are high in
nutrients and low in calories. Many
can be found for less than $1 per
pound in the grocery store!
7. Eat simple stuff. Eat as little stuff
that comes in a box, bag, or can as possible. Those foods usually have tons of ingredients and can be high
in salt and fat, and low on nutrients.
8. Take care of your teeth. Brush after meals and floss every day. See the
dentist every six months for a checkup and cleaning.
9. Wash your hands. The most important
thing you can do to avoid getting sick
is to wash your hands often. Keep hand sanitizer in your purse or car for when you can’t get to a sink.
10.
Set Realistic Goals. Try setting small goals that you know you can reach. For example, try just doing 15 minutes
of exercise every day for two weeks. Soon, you’ll be hooked and want to move more!
You don’t have to be perfect. You just
have to do your best!

10 of the Cheapest, Healthiest
Foods You Can Buy
Below are some of the cheapest healthy
foods you can get at the supermarket.
All of these items can be purchased for
usually under $2!
1. Oats: Oatmeal takes less than five minutes to make and it’s the perfect breakfast food, packed with nutrients
and fiber. Just add rolled oats into boiling water, add fruit, stir and enjoy!
5.
Dry Beans: Protein packed dry beans do take a bit of prep time, but they cost about a quarter of what canned beans do, have a lot less salt, and give you around 4x as many beans for your buck.
6. Dry Lentils: Unlike beans, lentils don’t
need to be soaked before cooking. They’re great in soups, stews, or sprinkled over a salad.
8.
Frozen Spinach: Another one of those super foods. Frozen spinach is usually cheaper than raw spinach and takes up less space. Use it in omelets, as a topping on pizza, as a healthy filling in quesadillas, or an ingredient in a veggie soup.
Nonfat Greek Yogurt: Remember buy in bulk to save a buck. For a tasty breakfast treat, put some in a bowl, add sliced fruit, a few of your favorite nuts, and maybe a little honey for sweetness. Also a healthy alternative to mayo!
2.
Eggs: Hard-boiled eggs make an awesome after-school snack. Eggs are also a great way to get protein in the morning.
9.
3.
Bananas: Probably one of the cheapest foods on this list, the Potassium rich banana comes in its own natural “wrapper,” so its a perfect on-the-go food!
10.
4.
Broccoli: A true superfood, broccoli is packed with Vitamin C, Vitamin K, and Potassium. Steam it with a little salt, pepper and butter!
7.
Baby Carrots: Raw baby carrots are a fantastic food for packing in lunches. Eat plain or dip them in dressing or hummus, or chop them over a salad.
Potatos: Baked potatoes are an easy, low-fat food. Add low fat cheese, steamed broccoli (and other veggies), chili, and chopped chicken for a quick and easy meal!

Making a Check List for The Dentist? What You
Should be Asking
The Dentist can be a helpful source for health issues at
home. Before you go to the dentist, sit down and write out
any questions or concerns you might have about your or
your child’s oral health, then bring the list with you to the
appointment. This is a helpful tool in remembering what you
want to ask, as well as tackling issues that have arisen, prior to
your appointment. We’ve compiled a list of helpful questions
to get you started.
Remember, it is important to also ask your child questions
about their oral health before arriving at the dentist. Often
kids forget or simply aren’t cognitive of what is happening in
the day to day of their oral health. Make the most of your visit
to the dentist by being ready to ask the right questions and
mention any concerns you might have.
Questions to Ask Yourself or Your Child Before Going to the
Dentist:
1.
Do you have
jaw?
2. Do you have
mouth?
3. Do you have
4. Do you have
5. Do you have sensitive teeth?
6. Do you have a dry mouth?
7. Does your jaw ever feel sore or tight, and does it ever
make popping sounds?
8. Do you have any allergies?
9. Are you taking any medications, either prescription, overthe-counter, or both?
Questions to ask the dentist about your child’s teeth:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Are their teeth and jaws developing okay?
How can I make sure my child’s teeth are clean everyday?
How do I prevent baby bottle tooth decay?
Do you have any helpful tricks on getting my kid to brush
and floss their teeth?
5. Are sealants a good idea for preventing cavities?
6. Do they need to brush or floss more?
7. Is there anything I need to tell my child’s doctor?
any aches or pains in your mouth, teeth, or
any spots or sores on your gums, tongue, or
gums that are tender or bleed easily?
a funny taste in your mouth or bad breath?

Patient Rights & Responsibilities
What You Should Know & Understand
About Your Dental Care
LET’S
TALK!
Welcome to Kool Smiles! We are excited you have chosen the Kool Smiles team as your
dental care provider. Our goal as your dentist is to help you and your family establish good,
healthy dental habits that will last a lifetime.
This information is really important! You should read and understand it before receiving any treatment.
Here’s why it is important: This document explains rights and responsibilities. It tells you what you should know and understand
about dental treatment. It also lets you know exactly how we plan to provide quality dental care to you and your family.
What we both agree to:
• You are responsible for your and your child’s oral health
care decisions. Our team will provide information and offer
professional advice, but ultimately you make the decisions.
• You are responsible for practicing good hygiene habits at home
(eat three healthy meals, brush twice and floss once each day!).
You are also responsible for coming in to the dental office for
regular professional cleanings.
• You are responsible for completing any treatment you agree to
in order to ensure a healthy outcome. Except in the case of pain,
or emergency care, we can refuse treatment if you have failed
to show up for appointments, are disruptive or could, in our
judgment, be a risk to other patients, doctors and staff.
• We will treat each other with kindness and respect. Our dental
care providers will be attentive to your needs and we will answer
any questions you may have to the best of our ability.
• Our dentists and staff will do their best to provide high quality care
to all of our patients, without regard to ethnicity, gender, national
origin, religion, age, or disability. If we feel your care is best
provided by someone else, we will provide you with a referral.
• We will keep details about your health, dentist visits, and
treatment plans private in accordance with federal and state
privacy requirements. It is your responsibility to give us honest,
accurate, and complete information about your medical history
and current health status so we might make the best professional
decision about your care needs.
• We know that both our patients and doctors have busy
schedules, so it is important that you are on time for all scheduled
appointments. If we believe there will be a long delay while we
attend to the dental needs of other patients, we will tell you
and offer alternatives. We ask that you do your best to notify us
at least a day in advance if you need to change or cancel your
appointment.
• We will work together, in good faith, to resolve any problems
or conflicts that may arise. We are both responsible for
communicating with one another to try to resolve any differences
and to try to make things better.
Before You Begin Any Dental Treatment:
After your exam, a Kool Smiles dentist will provide a treatment
plan using their best independent clinical opinion. You will have
an opportunity to openly discuss this plan, and how much it will
cost, with a dental professional. If you are not sure about any
treatment, what it is, what it is designed to accomplish or why
it is needed, discuss it with your dentist before agreeing to the
treatment.
Suggested questions to ask before treatment begins:
❑
❑
❑
❑
❑
❑
Are there any other treatment options?
How much will this cost?
How much will I owe if my insurance does not pay?
Is there a cheaper option?
What could happen if I go without this treatment?
Is this treatment likely to solve my problem?
You can always decide to:
• Accept, delay, or decline any part of the treatment
recommendations, including work that is already in progress.
• Use other payment options, such as credit and extended payment
plans. You should always understand the additional cost if you
don’t pay using cash; credit options might be more expensive.
• Seek a second opinion. There may be additional cost of receiving
a second opinion from another dentist. Remember that each
dentist’s opinion might be different. You should choose the
treatment option you think is right from a dentist you trust.
• Request a copy of your medical records.
Our Commitment:
At Kool Smiles, we agree to live up to these responsibilities and
provide the highest quality care possible, protect your privacy,
and be a partner on your oral health journey. We will work
quickly to address any of your concerns. We want to be your
dentist for the long term, so it is important to us to resolve any
potential issues to your satisfaction.

10 Tips for Eating Healthy on a Budget
10 Tips for Eating Healthy on a Budget
There are so many different ideas of
what “healthy eating” is that it can get
pretty confusing. But the truth is it’s
easier and cheaper than you might think
to have a healthy diet. Here are 10 tips
for eating healthy on a budget.
Avoid foods that come in a box, bag,
or can. They’re pricey and usually
loaded with salt, fat, or sugar. The two
exceptions to this rule are low-sodium
canned beans and canned tomatoes.
Eat frozen fruits and veggies. This is
often a cheaper option to buying fresh
produce and frozen foods may even
have more nutrients than fresh stuff.
Buy cheap sources of protein. Replace
meat with cheaper (and often healthier)
sources of protein like beans, nuts,
eggs, greek yogurt, and canned chunk
light tuna.
Ditch the cereal and make some
oatmeal. Kids go through cereal
quickly, and the dollars add up fast.
Instead, choose oatmeal made from
rolled oats for breakfast, which happens
to be packed with fiber, takes only one
minute to cook, and is one of the most
inexpensive foods in the supermarket!
Eat one cup of veggies with lunch,
and one cup with dinner. Veggies like
broccoli, spinach, kale, and carrots are
not only super healthy, they’re super
affordable! In fact, they’re some of the
cheapest foods you can buy. Eating
veggies at every meal not only does
your body good, but is a surprisingly
smart choice if you’re on a budget.
Give beans a chance! Beans are an
incredible source of lean protein. Dry
beans are cheaper than canned beans,
but do require quite a bit more prep
time.
Don’t drink sugar. You could save a
bundle by cutting out sugary drinks like
juice, sports drinks, and soda. These are
also bad for your teeth and filled with

calories. Instead, make water your drink
of choice. From the tap, it costs next to
nothing.
Don’t buy brand-named foods. You’re
paying for a pretty label. Instead go for
the cheaper generic version. Once it’s
out of the package, you’ll never be able
to tell the difference!
Eat at home. Meals you buy at
restaurants (even fast food places) can
be made for a fraction of the cost at
home, and usually with fewer calories.
If you know you’re going to be out of
the house for a while, bring some homemade snacks with you.
Save time by eating it raw. Don’t have
time to cook? Grab a piece of fruit,
a small handful of nuts, or some raw
veggies like carrot or celery sticks.
