FIND A STARTING LINE
Got Glow? Not just any glow, but philanthletic glow?
Philan. . .what?
Philanthletic! Philanthropy + Athletics = Philanthletics. Where giving back meets going
the extra mile. If you’ve used athletics to support a Positive Tracks Charity, you’re not
just awesome – you’re philanthletic. And if you look in the mirror, you can see
the glow written all over your face: you’ve become a human express train of dogooderness fueled by sweat, creativity, passion and fun!
Philanthletic glow is that sweaty, soul-satisfying feeling you get from charging off the
couch into the great outdoors and boldly pursuing creative ways to give back to
something or someone you care about. Positive Tracks’ ultimate goal is to help you
find and share your philanthletic glow.o
FIRST STEP: Connect With A Positive Tracks Charity
In order for Positive Tracks to match your fundraising dollars, you must be fundraising
for a Positive Tracks Charity Partner, so find one that turns your crank, and give them a
click.
SECOND STEP: Decide How You’d Like To Participate.
Many Positive Tracks Athletic Events are open to anyone, though a few involve specific
teams and aren’t open to public participation. The good news is that anyone can
support a Positive Tracks Charity through an independent fundraising effort or virtual
participation. See Positive Tracks Athletic Events for a description of Positive Tracks
athletic efforts, and contact the Positive Tracks Coordinator connected to each event to
find out what will make the most sense – and be the most fun – for you to connect with.
THIRD STEP: Find Your “It” And Make “It” Happen!
To find out if your idea has legs or whatever else it takes to make it happen, run it
through the Positive Tracks idea-o-lator…
1. Does it make your heart pound – both literally and figuratively? Is this something
you like, care about, want to learn about, never tire of talking about? Do you find
yourself talking about your project/idea all the time? If you need a kick-start, check out
our list ideas.
2. Can you share the glow? Can you communicate your idea and its benefits to
partners, sponsors and team members? If not, don’t sweat it—simplify it. Ask for
2
input. Turn that idea every direction, pull it apart and reveal it until its brilliance shines
clearly.
3. Do you have the glow dough? Do you have the resources to pursue your project? If
not, do you have a plan for how to find them? By evaluating exactly what your project
requires in terms of effort, time, space, and money, you will be prepared to soar
through each stage. Here are Positive Tracks Glow-Kit Tools including a sample “Grow
The Glow” fundraising letter, a “Glow-Maker” craft-your-pitch guide, and “Traction Plan”
tracking grid to help with take-off.
4. Does this register high on the glow-ometer? Can you measure the success of your
project by dollars, awareness or any other positive change? Whether you are selling
something, helping someone, or making the world a little more awesome by designing
a new pair of blister-free socks, you and your team need to identify a means of
measuring success.
FINAL STEP: Sign up, buttercup!
Go to your charity’s website to find and register for your athletic effort, or contact
the Positive Tracks Coordinator connected with your charity to launch an independent
effort.
CONFUSED? We’ve got answers! Need help getting started? Contact Positive Tracks
Central. Ready to glow for it? Check out the Positive Tracks Tool-Kit for serious glowhow.

PROMOTING YOUR EFFORT
A great idea or effort deserves to reach a wide audience. Practical tips to boost
outreach:
•
Craft your pitch and specific talking points including who, what, when, why
of your project or team; the name of the benefiting organization; and allimportant contact info. Include visuals; use your own words, style and
edge; practice your pitch until it is simple, clear and energized.
•
Register your Positive Tracks Effort through your athletic event website as
soon as possible to take advantage of cross-promotional opportunities like
event messaging and website visibility.
•
Work closely with Positive Tracks Coordinators to determine other potential
promotional and sponsorship opportunities. They are there to help you!
•
Follow style guides and use logos of involved partnering organizations including
Positive Tracks. It’s crucial to submit independent marketing materials for
approval before use.
•
Use social media channels like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and
Pinterest and Vine. (@postracks, #postracks, @positivetracks for FB)
•
Direct communication through email, electronic newsletters, school/church
messaging boards, and community media channels are other great ways
to promote your efforts to friends, family, and your community. Encourage
others to share information and connection. Show enthusiasm and tell
your story whenever possible. Word of mouth is a powerful building tool
too!
•
Hang posters in local recreational facilities and other high-traffic locations
– community centers, coffee shops, grocery store bulletin boards, school
bulletin boards, etc.
•
Let Positive Tracks know what you’re doing so we can provide you with materials
and support, plus spotlight you through Positive Tracks social media channels
and website.
LOGO USE & MESSAGING GUIDELINES
8
There are a few things that go along with the Positive Tracks “double
dollar deal”! You must:

Agree to have the Positive Tracks logo and messaging on your promotional efforts,
fundraising missives and registration page! Use Positive Tracks Boilerplate to explain
Positive Tracks and what it does for you and the Charity Partner you’re supporting. Use
your charity’s boilerplate language as well. Your coordinator can access your charity’s
boilerplate language and logo/brand usage guidelines.

If you are creating flyers or posters with a Charity Partner’s Logo, please include a
Positive Tracks Logo, too. (Logos can be found here.) Make sure logos are of equal size
and have roughly similar exposure or placement on any promotional materials. We are
happy to help you adjust any flyers or posters you make to incorporate this logo. Just let
us know!

Protect the integrity of Positive Tracks and its partners by checking in with Positive
Tracks Coordinators and abiding by each organization’s policies and protocol for
independent fundraising efforts, logo usage, and style guide. Independent Fundraisers
should use a second line identifying the relationship with the event/organization. Here’s
an example: Use “Bake Sale benefiting The Dempsey Challenge: Proceeds doubled by
Positive Tracks” instead of “Dempsey Challenge School Bake Sale.” This makes it clear
that your bake sale isn’t The Dempsey Challenge – your bake sale benefits The
Dempsey Challenge. Adding Positive Tracks to your title recognizes Positive Tracks as a
sponsoring partner, plus lets donors know that their dollars will be doubled when they
support your effort.

Hand out and display Positive Tracks promotional materials you receive.

Comply with social media messaging that Positive Tracks and your Charity Partner
recommends. Please add Positive Tracks and logo to your Facebook event page. If you
tweet about Positive Tracks use @PosTracks in your tweets and #postracks on
Instagram.

Agree to wear Positive Tracks t-shirts at your charitable effort or in its build-up. Positive
Tracks t-shirts and specific marketing materials messaging your charity’s partnership with
Positive Tracks will be given to you and other organizers when you contact Positive
Tracks or your coordinator.
MEDIA KIT

STEWARDSHIP GUIDELINES FOR
POSITIVE TRACKERS AND MENTORS
 PROMOTION
10
We want your fundraising events to be successful! Once a Charity Partner has
approved your independent fundraising effort, Positive Tracks/organization/event staff
will likely help promote your event through duo website and social media
channels. Please understand that not all charities (including Positive Tracks) are staffed
to promote your efforts full-time, and that Positive Tracks Charity Partners reserve the
right to refuse to promote any independent efforts which are not approved by event staff.
 MISSION & VALUES
The mission of Positive Tracks is to help young people get active and give back using
the power of athletics. We help Generation Next turn passion for athletics into
meaningful philanthropy by matching youth fundraising efforts.
 SOLICITATION OF CORPORATE DONATIONS
Anyone wishing to request monetary or in-kind donations from a company should first
seek approval from benefiting Charity Partners. This will avoid duplicating efforts or
jeopardizing current corporate partnerships.
 RAFFLES AND OTHER GAMES OF CHANCE
Positive Tracks strongly discourages organizers of Independent Fundraising Efforts from
conducting raffles or other gaming activities in connection with their fundraising activities
without checking with legal sources first. It is the responsibility of the organizer of the
Independent Fundraiser to be sure that fundraising activities comply with all state and
federal laws. Positive Tracks takes no legal responsibility for the activities conducted by
an Independent Fundraiser benefiting one of its Charity Partners.
 AVAILABILITY OF POSITIVE TRACKS/CHARITY/EVENT STAFF
Please inform Positive Tracks and your charity’s staff well in advance if you’d like a
representative of Positive Tracks or your charity/event to attend in an official capacity (to
welcome guests, thank participants, make any remarks or join in the ceremonies). While
we can’t guarantee attendance, we’ll do our best to have a representative attend your
event to thank and support you!
 INDEMNITY & LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
While charity/event staff is pleased to answer questions and provide general information,
the ultimate responsibility for meeting these obligations rests with the Independent
Organizer or group. Positive Tracks takes no legal responsibility for the activities
conducted by an independent fundraiser benefiting a Positive Tracks Charity
Partner. Failure to comply with guidelines and rules may result in immediate removal
from the Charity Partner’s Athletic Event and outside reporting of behavior as
appropriate.
 TAKE A DEEP BREATH
11
If you’re overwhelmed by all these rules and request, take a deep breath, Glow-Getter,
and realize that you’re learning important stuff about how to steward your charity’s brand
and values. Please contact Positive Tracks with any
questions you have about promotional efforts or logo
usage. And thanks in advance for your support of Positive
Tracks’ partnership with your charity.

YOUTH+ATHLETICS+PHILANTHROPY = AWESOME RESULTS
Positive Tracks is a national, youth-centric nonprofit that inspires young people to get active and give back using the
12
global power of sport. We match youth dollars raised through charitable athletic efforts, so young people can make the
world awesome: starting with themselves, starting in their own backyards.
WHAT WE DO:
• We engage Generation Next. With our help, 36,000 young people will leverage 221,000 miles of athletic activity to
raise over $4,000,000 for multiple charities by the end of 2014.
• We engage 9 Charity Partners and support 165 charitable athletic events in 30 states and 4 countries.
• We partner with corporations and philanthropies to deliver customized partnerships and cause-marketing
opportunities.
• We measure impact by tracking youth reached, dollars raised, and miles traveled via various athletic activities
(currently 22 sports).
HOW WE DO IT:

FACEBOOK – CREATING & MANAGING EVENTS GRS TIPS & TEMPLATE
Facebook is a very powerful tool for getting the word out about an upcoming tournament
and for encouraging people to participate. Due to a limitation in Facebook’s Events
Application, Grassroot Soccer (GRS) cannot add your tournament as an event on the
GRS Facebook page. Therefore GRS strongly urges you to create a Facebook event
page for your tournament using your own Facebook account.
Please remember to “like” the official Grassroot Soccer and Positive Tracks pages on
Facebook! This is a great way to stay informed of news and updates and you may gain
some knowledge to share at your tournament.

POSITIVE TRACKS DOUBLE DOLLAR DEAL CONTRACT
HEY ___!
We’re so thrilled that you’re interested in supporting (charity) and we can’t thank you enough!!
We’re looking forward to working with you, and wanted to run a few crucial guidelines by you as
you launch your planning effort, plus give you some tools from Positive Tracks to help you get
organized.
Speaking of Positive Tracks, I'm not sure if you have heard the awesome news, but we have a
partnership with Positive Tracks – a youth-centric organization that helps young people (23 and
younger) get active and give back through the power of athletics.
Positive Tracks has given (charity) a matching challenge grant to double the dollars youth
participants raise for (charity event). This means that YOUR EFFORTS will be doubled by
Positive Tracks. As a result, your energy and dedication could mean serious extra $$ for (charity)
and its programs!
To be a part of this sweet deal you will need to:
Include the Positive Tracks logo and on all messaging and promotional materials. Your donors
will love to know that your dollars are being doubled! Boilerplate Language to help you
explain Positive Tracks and the match is attached here.
If you are creating flyers or posters with the (charity’s) logo, you need to include a Positive
Tracks Logo as well (attached and found in Positive Tracks Style Guide). Make sure the
logos are of equal size and have roughly similar exposure or placement. We are happy to
help you adjust any flyers or posters in order to incorporate this logo. Just let us know!
Include Positive Tracks in your social media messaging.
Please like Positive Tracks on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/PositiveTracksOrg,
and add their logo to your Facebook event page. If you decide to message about Positive
Tracks through your social media channels (which would be GREAT), please use
@PosTracks in your tweets, @PositiveTracks on Facebook and #postracks for
Instagram.
22
If you’re using banners, please put up a Positive Tracks Banner along side your (charity)
banner or poster. A Positive Tracks Banner can be sent to you if there’s one available at
the time of your independent effort. Hand out and display any Positive
Tracks documents, pamphlets or information material you receive.
Check out the Positive Tracks Toolkit and Positive Tracks Glow-Kit Tools to help with take-off
and implementation of your efforts.
Questions about Positive Tracks participation options can be answered on Find A Starting
Line and FAQ pages of the Positive Tracks website, or please contact me personally for
help.
Last but not least, PLEASE email me to inform us that you accept this generous matching offer
and let me know if you have any questions about Positive Tracks and/or our partnership
with them this year.
Thanks in advance for your support of this partnership. We hope that you enjoy being a part of
this matching challenge grant!
HUGE THANKS for supporting (charity) and being a part of the Positive Tracks team.
Signed,
Your Positive Tracks Coordinator

TOP 10 FUNDRAISING TIPS

Be You! Smile, laugh, make friends and have fun every step of the
way. You are the best advertisement for your cause!

Tell Your Story. You believe in your cause, right? So clearly
communicate it, and let your passion lead the way in convincing your
supporters of its worthiness.

Create A Timeline. Start with your end goal and work backwards from
your goal in baby steps. Now you’ve built an action plan. Go, you!!!

Ask Creatively. Use your imagination and sense of humor. Use visual
tools and social media to reach beyond family and friends.

Ask Directly. People often respond more quickly to a tangible request than
to a general request.

Promote Effort Through Multiple Channels. Social media, direct email,
flyers and every friendly big mouth or proud parent you know.

Follow-up! Engage supporters and potential supporters with updates on
your progress and on how their money will make a difference. Send them
visuals of you in action!

Leverage The Double Dollar Deal. Remind yourself and your supporters
that Positive Tracks makes every effort and dollar a Two-fer.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Plan B. Square pegs and round holes, puppies and
discipline – some things just don’t work. Don’t dim your hopes—just go in
a new direction.

Thank, Thank, Thank! Recognize partners, sponsors, donors,
mentors, team members, supporters, and anyone who has helped you
along the way. Nobody goes it alone.

the sponsor you!

working to help the world!
 Start early. Have fun with your fundraising efforts!
 Set a fundraising goal and let your potential sponsors know what that goal is
 Write a personal letter; create a newsletter or press release; make in-person
solicitations. If you write a letter, include a donation form and a self-addressed
31
stamped return envelope.
 Ask for pledges from family members, friends, people at school, work, people
nearby, people far away.
 Suggest a minimum gift amount or put down options ($100, $50, $25, other)
 Write a personal note of thanks to each of your sponsors. This will go a long way,
especially when you approach them next year.
 All donations are tax deductible. Your Positive Tax Coordinator knows the Tax ID
Number for the Charity Partner you’re supporting.
 If you fundraise in memory or honor of someone, say so—telling a personal story
about your cause is a way for people to relate to you and your cause.
 Ask your supporters about matching funds from their employers.
 Double your fun: Challenge a friend to participate with you and raise her/his own
pledges!
