Don`t forget about this FREE event happening next week

11th March 2016
Dear Parents, Carers, Families & Friends,
I really hope that you all love the new playground as much as I do! Everyone here also seems to love it too! I want to say a
huge thank you to the Pupil Parliament who designed the layout for it, they worked brilliantly with Mrs Day, Mrs Miller and
myself and we are all really proud of their very sensible and innovative ideas. We also have 2 trees coming on Monday to go
in our very large pots which is very exciting, as well as a stage, a gazebo and musical instruments coming in the next few
weeks. I know that you will all take good care and look after everything. I want to say a huge thank you to all of you who
came to our Christmas fair and who helped out with it as the profits from it paid for our new stage.
We have had a really important review of the school this week. We had three visitors in who have spent three days getting
into classes, talking to your children and really getting to see the outstanding teaching for learning at Haseltine. We will let
you know soon how that review went.
A huge well done must go to the KS2 Haseltine Choir that sang at Catford theatre on Wednesday night, as part of the
Lewisham Live Voices concert. They were absolutely brilliant and I was just so, so proud of them all. Our partner school,
Fairlawn, also performed amazingly – we are 2 very talented schools. Thank you so much to Mrs Davey and all the Haseltine
staff and parents who helped to make our children attending the event possible – we are all so grateful to you all.
Best wishes,
Sara Anderman
(Your very proud Headteacher!)

We have an INSET day on Thursday 5th May and
one on Thursday 23rd June.
We break up for half term on Friday 27th May and
return to school on Monday 6th June.
We then break up for the big summer holidays on

Last week was Robotics Week in school when the children were able to learn about the exciting
world of robotics and take part in some workshops and activities on this theme. They
were also introduced to other aspects of engineering in activities later in the week. All children in
Key stage 2 had the chance to build and program Lego robots, working with Colin Palfrey from
Warwickshire ICT Development service. In addition, and probably the highlight of his visit for
children and staff alike, was the chance to meet NAO, a humanoid robot he brought with him.
Children throughout the school were introduced to him in assemblies, while some got the chance
to meet him again in the workshops.
Later in the week, year 5 and 6 took place in engineering workshops run by Exscitec, who work
with Imperial College, London to educate children in the field of science and engineering. The
children learned about different aspects of engineering such as making and firing paper rockets
using compressed air and programming and building robots at a more advanced level, this time
writing their own programs rather than using visual computer icons.
At Haseltine we feel it is really important that children learn about these topics at a young age.
There is a shortage of engineers in the UK and robotics is a fast developing field which will impact
your children's lives in the future. Hopefully, having the chance to take part in the workshops will
have sparked their interest and got them thinking, and opened their eyes to possibilities they
weren't aware of before, as well as the activities being enjoyable and fun in themselves.
There will be a display about the week going up in the hub by the end of this week so please go
and take a look for yourselves.
PE NOTICE
It has been a good term for our
children in PE working both indoors
and outside. Year 1 and 2 have been
improving their ball skills, year 3 have
been discovering the world of golf and year 4,5,6 have
been putting together their own gymnastics routines
(some can been seen on the school website!)
I would like to remind all children and parents/
guardian’s about the correct PE for both settings.
Indoors: Shorts, plain t-shirt, trainers
Outside: Tracksuit bottoms or leggings, plain
t-shirt, jumper, trainers
If you have any problems providing correct PE kit,
especially correct footwear, please let their class
teacher know and I can look at providing some spare
kit.
Thank you for your support.
