Distribution firm keeps track on
all deliveries with Fleetmatics
Before Paul Murray, owner of P Murray Distributions, installed the
Fleetmatics fleet management system into his fleet of 9 vehicles he found
it difficult to prove why delays were occurring: “In the distribution trade
any delay causes a knock on effect to subsequent deliveries. Any delay,
regardless of the reason, puts added pressure on my drivers and causes
frustrations for everyone all-round.”

The only way Mr Murray could investigate when and where delays occurred
was by referring back to the vehicle’s tachograph, which didn’t really provide
the relevant information to explain why the delay happened in the first
instance. “Tachographs are very difficult to read and our clients weren’t
interested in looking at them – even if they did show when and where the
delay occurred, in most cases the reason for the delay couldn’t be explained.”
Mr Murray had surveyed the offering of various fleet tracking systems and
knows someone who had already installed Fleetmatics: “I was told that
Fleetmatics’ support is great and, if there were any issues, they would be dealt
with quickly.” Since installing Fleetmatics Mr Murray has seen no resistance
from his drivers: “They knew right from the start that I was installing the system
to provide a better service – not to keep and eye on them.”
Mr Murray also found it difficult to keep in close contact with his drivers: “Now,
instead of disrupting them by constantly phoning, I can just look at Fleetmatics
LiveFleet to see where they are and how they are doing – this relieves a lot
of pressure from my drivers. It’s great for time management; I can plan routes
beforehand, see where everyone has to go and send them on deliveries.”

organisation on-the-go. I can also see if there are any regular delays and, using the Fleetmatics analytics tool,
can easily pinpoint the cause – if a client is taking too much time to take a delivery, for instance. By working
around the problems, we eliminate the driver from the situation and they don’t have to argue their case.”
Mr Murray has seen customer service improve dramatically since installing the Fleetmatics fleet management
system: “The outlook within the company is much improved; everyone works better together and the drivers
know specifically why I’m asking them to do a particular delivery. My drivers are happy, I’m happy and, more
to the point, my clients are happy. Clients are impressed about how good our service is and a lot of that is
down to Fleetmatics.”
