iii Dewi de Vree & Jeroen Uyttendaele Ground Description Ground is an audiovisual performance in which Graphite drawings are utilized as an electrical interface for several selfbuild electronic instruments. Drawing, erasing and touching are the main gestures of an audiovisual composition. Graphite is a conductor for electricity. By using graphite as a variable resistor (instead of a standard knob) the pitch, amplitude and sound-colour of synthesizers can be controlled through drawing. Ground offers a field of possibilities in which auditive and visual elements are insaparable elements. The drawings are often created during the performance on a large sheet of paper or A2 sketchingbooks and in which two performers are postioned towards each other (like a game for two players). Basic geometric shapes such as circles, triangles, lines, squares and grids etc. are used to create specific gestures and sounds. Ground seeks to display a delicate balance between chance and control in a performance. The performance can be characterized as a ‘composed and real-time exploration’ of the instrument’s potential. Thematic statement We find the theme of ‘glitch’ of ISEA2015 perticulary interesting and fitting tot our project. In an age of slick and ‘flawless’ image and sound production tools in which the element of risk taking is often reduced to almost zero, ground seeks to present an alternative and a more ‘raw’ form of audiovisual media. Error and change are fundamental elements that often steer the development of the instrument forward. The erratic nature of graphite never iii / Dewi de Vree & Jeroen Uyttendaele / Ground 1 produces the exact same sound twice and the ‘accidents’ that happen during rehearsals and performances are catalogued and give inspiration for new combinations and compositions. So in essence, we feel that it is chance that constantly drives ground to new territories. Her work includes sound performances, interfaces and installations based on sensual experience of physical experiments. Her interest in the interaction between the human and the machine led to different translatingmachines and sound interfaces. She studied at the Audiovisual department at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and at the interfaculty ArtScience at the Kabk in The Hague, The Netherlands. About Jeroen Uyttendaele Jeroen Uyttendaele (1981) is interested in sound and it’s relation to light, space, time and the viewer. This translates itself in the development of audiovisual instruments, installations and sound compositions. His works often exploite basic properties of technology such as electricity, metal, conductive materials as the main tools for expression. He lives and works in Brussels. About iii iii is an artist run platform for the development of self-made media based in The Hague which supports idiosyncratic research trajectories that zigzag between disciplines and distribution channels. At ISEA 2015, iii would like to offer a perspective from independent research centered on individual art practice. The research conducted within iii concerns expanded notions of musical performance and engages with new technologies as vehicles to deliver unique experiences to the audience.
