AGSV Boys’ Winter Sports Results ROUND 2 13th May AFL FOOTBALL FIRST AFL V Ivanhoe 4 7 31 V 20 11 131 Goal scorers Roberts (2), Stoddart, Fry Best players We started well and it was an even contest with neither side able to win clean footy and for the first 5 - 10 minutes it was predominately played between the two half forward lines. Ivanhoe kicked a couple and we got one back, but from then on Ivanhoe got their running game going and for the second week running we were dominated at clearances and stoppages. Ivanhoe's good players all got into the game, their bigger bodied players dominated in close and we couldn't match them. They kicked 6 goals for the quarter to lead 37 - 8 at quarter time. Our efforts in the second quarter lifted and for a large portion of the quarter I felt we had most of the play, our intensity around the footy was good and we slowed them up, however a few skill errors and lapses in concentration and Ivanhoe made us pay. In a quarter where I felt we probably outplayed them we lost the quarter 21 - 8. We just weren't getting the reward for our efforts. The third quarter went back to how the first quarter finished off, we allowed Ivanhoe to run, get first to the footy, became very reactive and just wanted to play safe / predictable footy. We weren't as a team prepared to run, take risks or attempt to make Ivanhoe accountable for us. They generally dominated the quarter winning 33 - 9. Tom asked the boys to take the game on and change the angles to try and open it up in the last quarter, disappointingly we weren't able to do that and Ivanhoe with the support of their school, completely dominated the last quarter winning it 40 - 6. 2nds AFL Goal scorers Best players 3rds AFL v Ivanhoe 8 4 52 V 10 12 72 Griffett 3 F. The team was in high spirits after a solid week on the training track. In pristine overhead conditions, debutant Jack Mitchell got on the scoreboard, cementing an early lead. The team was working in unity, with the defence proving gallant, preventing numerous Ivanhoe attacking movements. Ivanhoe eventually capitalised through sheer weight of numbers, leaving the score delicately balanced at 1-1 at half time. After the break, some early attacking efforts broke down, with Ivanhoe getting on top of the game. Despite numerous injuries to key players, the team fought on valiantly, with Josh Teale, Manisha Arunasalam and Dylan McCaffrey playing well in some unfamiliar roles in the last parts of the game. The final result was a 4-1 loss, with the defence conceding some late goals whilst we pressed in an attempt to steal a result. Overall, there is still some work to do, however also many positives which bode well for our attack on the rest of the season. While we won’t be happy for any loss, the fact that they scored in the first 15 secs of the game and didn’t add to that score line until the last 4 minutes, Yarra can be happy with the fact that we kept them under control for the majority of the game. The team is developing every week which is encouraging for all to see. Yarra finished in 6th place ahead of Ivanhoe, PEGS and Assumption. With injury and illness impacting on each team, our performance fell short of the heights achieved in Round 2. Nonetheless, some very impressive efforts by our Year 7 to 10 runners continued, and buoy hopes for strong results in the remaining 4 Rounds. Josh Wright and Brendan Choo, both from Year 9 continued to climb up the finishing order, crossing the line in 5th and 6th place respectively, recording best ever results in the process. Madi Phuah (Year 10), recovering from a serious foot injury worked hard over the second lap of the two lap event, chasing down 10 competitors to finish in 32nd place. Sam Smedley (Year 9) also impressed, completing the course in 29th position. Ruby Maher (Year 7) re-wrote her own record book. After finishing 23rd in the last Round, Ruby crossed the line in 16th place, and she was the first girl home. Ruby was also the 6th Year 7 student home. After a very long week participating in the Year 8 Camp, Zachary Warton ‘fronted up’ to contest the Junior race. Showing great determination, given he was very tired after the week-long camp, he still managed to finish in 18th place. Not to be outdone, Hunter Hopkins (Year 7) maintained his courageous effort right to the finish line, crossing in 22nd place. In the process he recorded a nine-place ‘personal best’. The Junior team finished in 5th place overall, and Yarra’s best result was achieved by the Intermediate team (4th overall). The Senior team slipped to 7th. Next week sees the Cross Country squad travelling to Albert Park to compete in the Victorian Schools’ Road Relay Championships. Page 4 of 4
