The slow economic recovery has rekindled wanderlust in
individuals who didn’t dare make a job switch during the
downturn. This includes those laid off during the recession who
took jobs that paid the bills rather than ones that advanced
careers. Recent media reports are replete with survey data—

including 24 Seven’s preliminary market study—that indicate
large numbers of the currently employed are looking to make
a career move in the next 12 months.
24 Seven’s soon to be released Salary Survey and Job
Market report finds respondents feeling up beat and in
search of a meaningful career upgrades (rather than just a
paycheck). While overall compensation is always a major
consideration for making a move, some respondents
indicated that “career pathing” and “interesting job content”
were also very important. With more companies reporting
that hiring is on the rise, it seems like it’s once again a
job seeker’s market.
Switching jobs is one of the fastest ways to bump
compensation significantly. While raises are on the rise, it’s
rare to get a double digit percentage increase in a current
role. A fresh start at a new company can also fast track the
career path, rather than waiting for the next rung to become
available on the current employer’s corporate ladder.
Demand for professional freelancers is also on the rise,
making this an opportune job market for those considering
the independent contract route as the next career move.
