KS2 Growing Together Lesson Plans Westminster

Lent Appeal
2017
KS2
Lesson Plans
Westminster
Diocese
Introduction
The theme of this year’s CCS Lenten Appeal is ‘Growing Together’. Over the six weeks of Lent, pupils will
look at different actions they can take to grow closer to God. Pupils will:
Week 1- Connect
Week 2- Understand
Week 3- Give
Week 4- Reflect
Week 5- Pray
Week 6- Celebrate
Pupils will also explore how schools across the Diocese are working together during Lent, trying to help local
children and young people living in poverty. Using the teachings and actions of Jesus, pupils will be inspired
to grow closer to God this Lent. These lessons are designed for pupils in Key Stage 2. An alternative activity
Doves
sheet and accompanying PowerPoint/Prezi is available for EYFS and Key Stage 1 pupils.
If you have already received your materials, you may have noticed a dove template in your order. In week 5,
pupils will be asked to write a prayer to God. In week 6, pupils will be asked to write this prayer on a dove.
These doves can be used for a display around school, or if you are planning on joining us at this year’s Good
Shepherd Mass then you can send them to us for our displays around the Cathedral. It would be wonderful if
we could have as many doves as possible to help us decorate the Cathedral and celebrate the children’s hard
work in fundraising for us during Lent. If you would like to send us your doves, please enclose the name of
your school with the note ‘Good Shepherd Mass’ and send to our main office: 73, St Charles Square,
London, W10 6EJ.

To think about what makes a family
To explore what it means to connect as part of the CCS family
Workbooks, PowerPoint/Prezi (online), scrap paper or mini whiteboards (for starter
activity), Matthew 12.46-50 (online),map worksheet & CCS service worksheets
printed double-sided (online)
What makes a family?
Starter
Pupils draw a picture of a family. Pupils compare their ideas with the person next to
them, looking at what is similar and what is different about their drawings.
Pupils work in pairs or groups to write a list of things that make a family. Feedback
as a class.
What does Jesus say about family?
Development
activities
As a class, read Matthew 12 46-50 (copies available online) Ask pupils what they
think Jesus is saying. Explain that Jesus is saying we do not have to be related to be
part of a family.
CCS
CCS is a family. Explain that the Catholic Children's Society (CCS) is a local charity
that works to help children and families living in poverty. Use the Prezi/PowerPoint to
explain the work of CCS.
Hand out a workbook and map/CCS services worksheet to each pupil. Ask pupils
what this map is showing- the Westminster Diocese. Explain that members of the
CCS family can be found across the Diocese. Pupils will read through the CCS
services worksheet, then use the information to find the grid square for our St
Francis Family Centre, St Mark’s Stay & Play and ConnectEd North (AnswersConnectEd North: 1841; St Francis: 1940; St Mark’s: 1840)
Pupils turn to their workbooks. Pupils read the stories in their workbook and suggest
which CCS service each child/family could go to for help. Pupils write down their
answers in their workbooks and explain why this is the right service for the
children/families. (Answers-Emily: St Mark’s; Nasir: ConnectEd North; Sara: St
Francis)
CCS Family
Use the Prezi/PowerPoint to show pupils that there are many more members of the
CCS family across the Diocese. Schools across the Diocese are also members of
the CCS family. Last year, 134 schools joined together for the CCS Lenten Appeal.
And last year, CCS were able to help 5818 people. CCS were able to help so many
people because of your fundraising! When we connect as part of a family we can
make a real difference. This year we are hoping to connect with even more members
of the CCS family and help our brothers and sisters in need.
Hand out collection boxes. Pupils can help their brothers and sisters in need by
raising money for CCS in their collection boxes. Thank pupils for being part of the
CCS family.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
4
Thank you for all that we have. Guide us as we work to help our brothers and sisters
this Lent, connecting together to grow closer to you.
Amen
Pushed for
time?
As a class, use the Prezi/ PowerPoint to explain the services of CCS. Individually,
pupils read through the children’s stories in their workbooks and write down which
CCS service each child/ family could go to. Feedback as a class. Use the Prezi/
PowerPoint to show the map of all the schools who are part of the CCS family.
Hand out Lenten boxes.

To explore Jesus’ experience in the desert
To understand the challenges facing local families
Workbooks, PowerPoint/Prezi (online), The Temptation of Jesus
passage (online), information packs (online)
How did Jesus try to understand others?
Starter
Use the Prezi/ PowerPoint to show pupils the image of Jesus in the
desert. Ask pupils if they know what this story is.
Explain that Jesus spent 40 days and 40 nights in the desert without
food or water to prepare himself for God's ministry. As a class, read
through the story of the Temptation of Jesus Matthew 4.1-11 (online).
Explain that by spending 40 days and 40 nights without food, Jesus
wanted to understand the suffering and pain of others. Throughout his
life, Jesus travelled to many places, working to understand the
difficulties experienced by those in need.
Understanding Others
Development
Activities
It is important that we follow Jesus' example and try to understand
the difficulties other people face. Explain that pupils are going to learn
about what poverty looks like in our Diocese.
Seb, Paige, Hannah and Michael all live in the Diocese of
Westminster. Each pupil will be given information about one of these
people. Pupils will imagine that they are that person. They need to
read the information that they have been given and each complete a
budget (activity 2 in the activity book) for their family. Pupils will use
their information packs to decide:
How much they are going to spend on rent
How much they will spend on transport costs
How much their bills will cost?
How much their mobile phone payments will be?
How much they will spend on clothing for their family?
How much their family activities will cost?
How much their holidays will cost?
Class discussion. Ask pupils:
Have they stuck to their budget?
Did they find it difficult to stick to their budget?
Use the Prezi/PowerPoint to ask pupils to imagine that they are ready
to move into their new home, that they are sticking to their budget.
But then . . .
Did any of them decide to buy a scooter, car or van? It breaks down.
You need to find £600 to fix it.
Hannah/Michael/ Paige . . . Your child needs a new school uniform
that costs £100. It will not be covered by your clothing budget.
Hannah/Michael/Paige/Seb . . .
7
You realise that your new home needs furniture. It will cost at least
£500 to furnish your home.
Hannah/ Michael/ Paige/ Seb
It is a cold winter. Your gas and electricity bills are £200 higher than
expected.
Hannah/ Michael/Seb. . .
You and your partner find out that you are going to have another
baby. Do you need a new home? More money for shopping?
Clothing? Leisure activities?
Pupils need to change their budgets to meet these new costs.
Ask pupils how their budgets are looking now.
Explain that many families in the Westminster Diocese are
experiencing financial pressures. Most people face difficult months
now and again. But for families living in poverty, keeping their home
and providing enough food can be a constant struggle.
The CCS Crisis Fund helps families who need emergency
assistance.
Use the Prezi/PowerPoint to show pupils the picture of Aisha. Explain
that this is Sara’s daughter Aisha. Sara, Aisha and their family were
helped by the Crisis Fund.
Helping Others
Prayer
Pushed for time?
Explain to pupils that they are helping families living in poverty by
raising money for the Crisis Fund. The CCS Crisis Fund offers
emergency help for families living in poverty.
The Crisis Fund provides money to families who are in need of
essential items, such as basic furniture, food or clothing.
Any Head Teacher in the Diocese can apply to the Crisis Fund to
help their pupils.
Over 250 families have been helped by the Crisis Fund. By collecting
money in your Lenten box, we can help even more!
Dear Lord,
Thank you for all that we have. Guide us as we work to help our
brothers and sisters this Lent, understanding the difficulties of others
to grow closer to you.
Amen
Choose one of the people from the lesson and as a class, create a
budget for that person. Then discuss as a class how they would cope
with unplanned expenses. Explain the Crisis Fund using the
PowerPoint/ Prezi.

Jesus by being giving and caring for those in need.
The Good Samaritan
Resources

 To think about why people reflect
 To reflect on the Last Supper
Workbooks, PowerPoint/Prezi (online), Jesus eats the Passover Meal Matthew
26. 17-30 Bible passage(online), audio clip (online), Teacher’s script (online)
What is reflection?
Pupils spend two minutes thinking about something that has happened to them
today that has made them happy. You may wish to play quiet, relaxing music in
the background.
Development
activities
Explain that our lives are often so busy that we forget to pause and think. When
we reflect, we take the time to pause and think. Reflection is an important part of
faith. When we spend time reflecting, we grow closer to God.
Reflection
Reflect on the Last Supper. As a class, read through ‘Jesus eats the Passover
Meal’. Pupils engage in an imaginative contemplation task. You can either use
the audio clip or Teacher’s script (both are available to download online). This
task helps pupils to engage with the story by placing them in the scene as Peter.
Following the reflection task, pupils write down their responses to the following
questions in their workbooks:
 Why did Jesus wash your feet?
 During the meal Jesus said, “I tell you, one of you will betray me.” How did
you feel when Jesus said this?
 What did Jesus mean when he said “I tell you, I will never again drink this
wine until the day I drink the new wine with you in my Father's Kingdom.”
How did you feel when Jesus said this?
Day-to-day reflection
Ask pupils- Why do they think it is important to reflect? Encourage them to reflect
every day this week, spending a few minutes just stopping and thinking. Perhaps
about something that has happened in their lives or Jesus’ life.
Prayer

To interpret the events of Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension
To celebrate how we have been giving to others this Lent
Resources
Workbooks, PowerPoint/Prezi (online), Bible passages on Jesus’ Resurrection and
Ascension (online), writing frames and sentence starters (online), dove templates
(one in pack to be photocopied, also online)
Starter
After Jesus’ death
Use the PowerPoint/ Prezi to show pupils the painting of the women visiting Jesus’
tomb, asking them to interpret the thoughts and feelings of different figures in the
painting.
Development activities
Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension
Read through the Bible passages describing Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension.
Pupils imagine that they are someone in the story. They could be one of the women
who go to the tomb, one of the disciples or one of Jesus’ followers who meet him on
the walk to Emmaus. In their workbooks, pupils re-write the story from their point of
view. Ask pupils- how do they think people felt when they realised that Jesus had
risen?
A time to celebrate
Explain that Easter is a time of celebration. As well as Jesus’ Resurrection and
Ascension, we can also celebrate how we have given to others this Lent. Pupils
return to Week 3 in their workbooks and complete their table. How have pupils
acted in a giving way this Lent? If pupils cannot complete their tables, ask them to
try and complete their giving deed over Easter.
Please thank pupils for giving to those in need by collecting money in their Lenten
boxes. Their fundraising really will make a difference!
Hand out dove templates to all of the pupils. Pupils will write down their prayers
from last week on the wings of their doves. They can then make their doves and
use them for a display in school and/or send them to CCS for the Good Shepherd
Mass.
Prayer
Dear Lord,
Thank you for all that we have. Guide us as we work to help our brothers and
sisters this Lent, celebrating together to grow closer to you.
Amen

Pushed for time?
As a class, read the story of Jesus’ Resurrection and Ascension. Pupils imagine
that they are someone in the story and, in their workbooks, re-write the story from
that person’s point of view. Hand out the dove templates. Pupils write their prayers
on the wings of their doves. They can then make their doves and use them for a
display in school and/or send them to CCS for the Good Shepherd Mass.
