• The game is played in guilds. Each guild will use 1 iClicker (doesn’t matter whose). To “buzz in,” one of the guild members must press the letter which corresponds to their Guild. (see below) “A” = Team 1 = Day & Knight Productions “B” = Team 2 = Look Back At It “C” = Team 3 = Order of the Blunt Knife “D” = Team 4 = SDG • Your responses must follow the proper Jeopardy Format; i.e. “What is/are ________?” The judges will issue reminders during the first 2 or 3 questions; however, after this any response not framed as a question will be considered incorrect. (Does this seem capricious and arbitrary? Of course it does –– that’s what game rules are, by definition!) • Gamemaster (GM) Fickle will serve as host — reading questions, keeping score, etc. Our two graduate student players – Vanessa & Younsong – will serve as the judges as well as the timekeepers. They will keep track of time, initially remind you to use the proper response format (“What is/are _______?”), and also get the final say over which guild “buzzed in” first, whether a response is correct, etc. Important!! Because of the limited nature of the iClicker response system, there are two significant differences from your traditional “Jeopardy” game: 1. For each prompt, guilds will be given the opportunity to respond in the order that they first buzzed in. 2. Except for the guild who buzzed in first, no other guild will lose points if they choose not to respond. In all cases, however, an incorrect response leads to point loss. For example, let’s say the prompt was worth 100 points. Guild C buzzed first, followed closely by B and D. Guild C gets the answer wrong; they lose 100 points, and now Guild B will immediately be given a chance to respond. Guild B chooses not to respond (or can’t answer within 5 seconds), so Guild D is now asked for their response – but Guild B does not lose any points. Guild D then gives an answer, but it is incorrect, so they lose 100 points. Finally Guild A (note they did not buzz in initially) is asked for their response. Guild 1 A chooses not to respond; they do not lose any points. The GM then announces the correct response, and the guild who last answered correctly selects a different prompt. How to Play • At the beginning of the game, the Wordsmith for each Guild will come up and roll the cursed dice; the highest roll goes first. • The winning guild selects from any of the prompts available on the board. (“We’ll take ‘Core Mechanics’ for 200, Gamemaster.”) • The Gamemaster (GM) will reset the iClicker “counter.” Speak up if she forgets! • The GM will reveal and read the prompt aloud. No guild is allowed to buzz in before the question has been fully read aloud by the Gamemaster; if this occurs, that guild is ineligible to respond. • Once the GM has finished reading the prompt, any guild member can “buzz in” and respond by pressing the corresponding letter on the Guild’s iClicker. Whoever buzzes in first – a decision made by the 2 graduate student judges – is given 5 seconds to respond. Anyone from the guild can speak. (You are encouraged to confer quietly with your guild, but don’t run out of time!) • If the guild responds correctly, they win the points and select another prompt. If they get it wrong, or have not responded within 5 seconds, they lose points, and the guild who buzzed in second is then given 5 seconds to respond. (Make sure to read the “Important” note above.) • If nobody buzzes in after 15 seconds, the prompt is closed and the guild who last answered correctly chooses another. • The game is over after 40 minutes or when all the prompts have been revealed, whichever happens first. • At the end of this time, the guild with the most points wins 20 XP (awarded to each member). Good luck, have fun, and remember, of course – it’s (only) a game! 2 For Graduate Student Judges only: You should decide in advance how to split up responsibilities among the two of you, since things will be moving quickly. Here are my suggestions. Note: You will need a stopwatch or timer (you’re welcome to use your phone or laptop, or borrow from the GM). Once the game begins: • Person 1 should be in charge of recording the order in which the guilds “buzzed” in (i.e. the order in which A-D appear on the iClicker screen). Remember: if a guild buzzed in too early – i.e. before the prompt was read – they are ineligible to respond. • Person 2 will announce to the GM which guild buzzed in first (if it’s really close, you two make a quick final decision). • Person 2 should start the timer (or count silently in their heads); if the guild has not responded in 5 seconds, Person 2 should announce “Time’s Up.” • Person 1 should be ready to announce which guild gets the chance to answer next (i.e. who buzzed in second); Person 2 should start the timer. • Repeat as many times as necessary (i.e. up to 4) for each prompt. • If, after the GM reads the prompt, nobody buzzes in, then after 15 seconds, Person 2 should announce “Time’s Up”; the GM will then ask the last correctly-answering guild to choose another prompt. • Remember: players must respond using the proper Jeopardy Format; i.e. “What is ________?” One of you should issue reminders during the first 2 or 3 questions; however, after this, if the GM forgets, you should announce, “Incorrect; response must be in the form a question.” • The GM will provide you with the correct responses for all prompts. If a guild’s response is close but not exact, the GM will ask the two of you to make the final decision. 3
