Leave Entitlements for Employees
Long Service Leave
Public service employees including public service officers, temporary employees, general employees and casual
employees are entitled to long service leave on full pay as provided for in the Directive 10/13 – Recreation and Long
Service Leave.
Who does it apply to?
This directive applies to:
 public service officers
 tenured general employees engaged under section 147(2)(a) of the Public Service Act 2008
 temporary employees engaged under sections 147(2)(a) and 148(2)(a) of the Public Service Act 2008
 employees engaged on a casual basis under sections 147(2)(b) and 148(2)(b) of the Public Service Act 2008

Public service employees including public service officers, general employees, temporary employees and casual
employees are entitled to long service leave on full pay as provided in the schedule of the

Entitlement
Employees Other Than State School Teachers
Employees other than state school teachers can access long service leave in periods of no less than one (1) day.
State School Teachers
State school teachers, including classroom teachers and those in classified positions, can access long service leave in
periods of no less than one day per week or fortnight provided requested periods of long service leave amount to:
 five days or more in total to facilitate the engagement of a replacement temporary teacher; or
 for a lesser period, provided the TRS UNP code is used.
An employee will give timely notice to their supervisor of their intention to take a period of long service leave. Unless
exceptional circumstances apply, state school teachers should apply for long service leave at least two terms in
advance. Where two terms notice is not given, the reasons for the delay in application should be documented along
with any exceptional circumstances that apply to the request.
Where an application for long service leave is approved and the period is one week or greater, the applicant has the
option of being paid for the leave in advance or may elect to continue to receive fortnightly payments during the leave
period. Where the advance option is chosen, there may be taxation implications if the period of the advance includes
the end of one financial year and the beginning of the next. (Note: Payment of long service leave in advance is at the
discretion of the chief executive.
