World War – a country from each continent is
fighting. War started in Europe (1914-1919).
Causes – M.A.I.N.
– Militarism – when a country builds up its military
– Alliances – when two or more countries agree to
protect each other
– Imperialism – when one country takes over
another
– Nationalism – Having great pride in your country

Franz Ferdinand Assassination- Archduke of
Austria-Hungary was killed in Serbia.
– This assassination set off all of the secret
alliances to start WWI.

Trench Warfare- Ditches built for protection
– Defensive style of fighting, led to stalemate
– Dirty, Disease filled, Uncomfortable
– Trench Foot- Disabled feet due to being wet.
No Man’s Land- Area between the trenches

– France nearly 1 million men killed
– Russia lost so many soldiers, they leave the
war in 1917 (Become Communist)

– Selective Service (Draft) – first time in U.S.
history young men were forced into the military
(24 million were drafted)
– Factories were retooled to make supplies and
weapons for the war

– Victory Gardens – Americans grew their own
food to save (rationing) food for soldiers
– War Bonds – Americans bought government
bonds to raise money for the war

Women During the War …
Women worked in factories – Built the
weapons and supplies that help the men
(soldiers), but were paid less than men
Some participated in the Isolationist
Movement (against the war)
– More politically active

Great Migration (1910 – 1930) – Southern
Blacks move to northern cities.
– About 6 million migrated
– New work opportunities due to no European
immigration because of the war

Espionage and Sedition Act –
made it illegal for Americans to
say anything against the
government or war effort
– President Wilson wanted to make
sure Americans supported the war
– Fined $10,000 or 20 years in jail
– This law was against the
Constitution (illegal)-Freedom of
Speech

fired
– Orchestras refused to play Mozart,
Bach or Beethoven music
– Pretzels and German authored
books were banned
– Hamburgers were renamed “liberty
