This paper reports to the CMP Steering Group and Board to provide assurance regarding CMP training. The paper describes feedback from attendees at the training that took place over the period June – July 2012. The feedback from attendees was captured using a questionnaire which contained closed and open answer questions (see Appendix A). The questionnaire was concerned with measuring the usefulness of the training programme, whether staff felt it met their needs and moreover to gain intelligence on local issues that may be raised during the road shows. The range and breadth of attendees would also give the CMP team a chance to meet the most important people in the CMP – ie the staff who are actually undertaking the measurement – and to learn from their insights into what works and their experiential knowledge. The scales used in the questionnaire were likert scales which indicate a range of responses on a scale of 1-5. The higher the number on the scale, the more favourable the response. Results The results are described in a series of graphs and tables below. Staff from a wide variety of disciplines were invited. This included school nursing staff, child health staff, dieticians, child medical officers and MEND specialists. The main audience were the school nurses and child health staff and these numbers of individuals were used as the original number of expected staff expected to attend. The actual number of attendees differed according to the location. This was expected because attendees were given flexibility to attend other training days if diaries did not permit. The overall attendance rate was higher than expected (101%) but this varied depending on the locality. In addition, the feedback forms were received for 77% of the attendees again varying on a locality by locality basis. The details of the response rate are described in Table 1. However the overall responses are described in Table 3. In general, the responses have been favourable with high levels of satisfaction in terms of how; useful the roadshow was knowledge of the CMP was increased useful the training was Well the session was organised Scores are hard to give because a likert scale was used for the above questions. The organisation of the events was particularly highly scored. Most importantly the attendees felt More confident to undertaking measurements (96%) Would recommend this to colleagues to attend (98%) Equality & diversity had been addressed (98%) The reader should note that 41% identified further training needs and the majority of these arose from 4 of the 14 events. Only five individuals commented on what further training is required and in particular indicated the following training: other staff groups (esp. Health Visitors and Managers) the use of the various BMI Centile charts to better support primary prevention of obesity. Further details of the identification of further training needs is given in Appendix B. Comments Two types of comments were captured – Those written directly on the feedback forms Notes taken during each session by CMP Admin Feedback given was reviewed and where appropriate, acted upon. Date: 06/03/2012 Version:1.0 Page: 5 of 14 Child Measurement Programme for Wales Key Standards 2011/12 The detail and responses to these are available in the spreadsheet, however the following are of particular note Changes in the use of the ‘Clothing‘ field on the new CMP form intended for Year 4 in order that situations where the CMP ‘standard’ is not readily achievable. This was partly because of time constraints relating to adjusting clothing for children (eg to removing heavier clothing in winter time and removing head-dress worn for cultural and religious reasons). The form will default to 1 (standard light clothing) but can be changed by the nurses to reflect heavier, lighter or ethnic differences. The addition of ‘Actual Appointment date’ of measurement box to the data collection form. This is to mitigate against an issue that arose when discussing the detailed processes jointly with school nursing and child health staff. BMI Centile requires the ‘date measured’ to be accurate so addition of this field is important. It was identified that despite many requests to Health Boards to relating to equipment needs, some staff in one Health Board were still using bathroom scales that do not meet the required standard and require a further 12 scales. The CMP team intend to reiterate to all the HB’s that it is a legal requirement to use class 3 or higher scales for the CMP The Non-Automatic Weighing Instruments (NAWI,) directive was made part of UK law in January 1993 and aims to not only control the technical and performance characteristics of weighing instruments, but also to specify which tasks require approved weighing equipment. In addition to the NAWI regulations, scales that use both metric and imperial can still be used, but only the metric units are strictly legal for medically approved measurement. Majority of delegates enjoyed the trainers presentations and gave very positive feedback. A few weeks after the road show, the CMP received an e-mail from a manager after several members of her staff expressed concerns regarding a particular matter relating to the training. The CMP team are looking into this matter. Date: 06/03/2012 Version:1.0 Page: 6 of 14 Child Measurement Programme for Wales Key Standards 2011/12 Summary The training road shows were organised by Ros Causey & Washington Magaya under enormous pressure of time and work. The responses of the road shows indicate that attendees valued the road shows and more importantly the road shows were able to spread information about measuring heights and weights as well as knowledge about the CMP. It should be noted that further training was requested in just under 50% of attendees. It is recommended that local implementation groups in every health board specifically ask the teams as to what this may be and address this in their respective implementation plans.
