10 FOLLOW T T JCP Things You Need to Know About The Family and Children Division Act 2016 w w w.jcp.tt The Family and Children Division Act seeks to: Create a Division of the High Court to be called, "The Family and Children Division" to oversee all family and children court matters. Enable the Family and Children Courts to conduct hearings in different ways. E.g. face-to-face, by phone or videoconferencing. Ensure that the Family and Children Division has Judicial officers and staff who are trained and qualified. #1 Sections 10,12,16,26,28 &31 Section 5 #2 Section 4 Assign Judges to the Family and Children Courts who’ll be known as Family Court Judges and Children Court Judges respectively. Track the progress of a child before the Court through "monitoring hearings" Sections 10&26 and reports by Children Probation officers. #3 #4 Section 7 Refer a child to a "Children Drug Treatment Court Process" where suitable. On successful completion of the process, the Court can order that no conviction be recorded. #10 Sections 20&34 #8 #9 #5 Establish a Family and Children Court Administration Department to support the operations of the Courts. Sections 37,38&39 Sections 47,48 &56 Protect the identity of a child before the court. #6 #7 Safeguard the interests and voice of a child before the Court using legal representatives. Sections 21&35 Refer a child to Court-annexed Peer Resolution where suitable for recommendations on sanctions. Section 40 The Trinidad and Tobago Juvenile Court Project (JCP) is made possible through the United States Agency for Development (USAID). The JCP is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Judiciary of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
