The use of EU tools in implementing Lisbon strategy locally Case East Turku: East Turku Objective 2 Urban dimension Characteristics of East Turku: • 30.000 inhabitants, 1.300 companies • Unemployment rate in big suburbs of East Turku 19,2–21,7% (the whole city 11,4%) • 15,2% of East Turku inhabitants are immigrants (in the biggest suburb the proportion is up to 26,8%) • The biggest language groups among the immigrants: Russian, Arabic, Albanian, Kurdish, Somali and Vietnamese • Growing high tech industrial area called Turku Science Park • One area – two dimensions The use of EU tools in implementing Lisbon strategy locally Creating more jobs and increasing local employment East Turku project examples • Fortuna project has been successful in improving employment in the suburbs, and Tempo project has linked the unemployed and the companies - • key success factor: individual approach to unemployed inhabitants in their own neighbourhoods Global Trade Business Service Incubator: the project helps immigrants’ business start-ups - key success factor: linking together unemployed immigrants and business incubator services The use of EU tools in implementing Lisbon strategy locally More pleasant and attractive environment for inhabitants and new businesses East Turku project examples • The Keidas (Oasis) project has constructed an attractive business environment in the Turku Bio Valley area - key success factor: new approach to industrial environments • A project for developing the Jaaninoja creek, a part of river Aura, with respect to Nature into the area’s central park - key success factor: empowerment of inhabitants concerning of their own living environment City of Turku has improved the quality and effectiveness of its EU funded activities • The city has increased its role as a responsible actor • A closer link to the Turku Strategy now and in the future • National and international co-operation with other cities • City of Turku has set up an coordination unit for Objective 2 Urban Dimension (Linkki project), which coordinates, follows and directs the implementation of the programme - Coordination of the programme brings added value for the accomplishment of programme aims and increases its openness, quality and result-achievement orientation.
