ROLE DESCRIPTION ROLE TITLE UK School Games Volleyball Team Manager – Voluntary Post REPORTS TO Head Coach and the School Games Single Point of Contact The Team Manager (TM) is the key point of contact for the athlete throughout the UK School Games (UKSG). He/she will be responsible for all “non field of play” areas and the flow of communication between the National Governing Body (NGB) lead and the athlete. He/she will be in loco-parentis of athletes, and work with other UKSG team staff to ensure that the athlete experience at a multi sport and multi site event is positive, safe and well managed. Dates required in 2016: Various training dates/selection camps prior to UKSG as required by Head Coach Holding Camp: TBC The Games: 1st September – 3rd September 2016 Team Manager Orientation: TBC ROLE PURPOSE: To assist in creating a performance environment and culture for athletes and team staff at the UKSG. To manage and co-ordinate all team requirements for the UKSG including: o Athlete and team staff data required in advance of the UKSG o Transport, arrival and departure processes, and games time transportation in partnership with the appointed travel company. o Athlete and team staff kit ordering and distribution To be the liaison point between the NGB and the athlete on all matters relating to the UKSG. To be in loco-parentis of all athletes within the team and manage athlete discipline as required during the UKSG. To work in partnership with the Welfare Co-ordinator and officers to ensure the welfare of athletes and team staff throughout the UKSG. To work in partnership with other Team Managers and team staff within the sport to ensure coherence between individual team and delegation plans. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Prior to the UKSG, Team Managers are responsible for: All athlete communication in relation to the UKSG. Confirming availability of all athletes. Ensuring all athlete information (personal details, kit sizing, medical and welfare information, media biographies) is completed by team members and submitted onto the UKSG EMS. Liaising with the nominated transport provider to support the planning of all team travel arrangements: to, from and during the UKSG. Ensuring all team members are aware of the arrivals and departure processes for the UKSG. Working with the NGB and event organisers to agree an accommodation plan which meets the preferences of the team and squad as a whole. Attending the Team Manager Orientation and reading the Team Managers’ Manual. Agreeing roles and responsibilities with the appointed Team Attaché. Signing the Welfare Plan for the UKSG on behalf of their sports staff. During the UKSG, Team Managers are responsible for: All athlete communication in relation to the UKSG. Agreeing ‘loco parentis’ role with athletes and expectations. Ensuring that all athletes arrive at and depart from, the host city according to the travels plans agreed with the nominated transport provider. Ensuring that the athlete arrival process at the Athletes’ Village is managed in accordance with the plans provided. submitting rooming lists to UKSG staff Ensuring all athletes report at the agreed times for all local transport, training, competition and ceremonies. Ensuring athlete welfare in partnership with the Welfare Co-ordinator. Supporting the social /evening entertainment programme for all athletes. Supporting any public relations, communications and media requests as appropriate with team members. Attending Team Managers’ daily briefing session. Visiting the Hub area in the Athletes’ Village on a regular basis to access information provided centrally. After the UKSG, Team Managers are responsible for: All athlete communication as appropriate. Providing a formal report to the NGB to provide feedback and assist the future development of the UKSG. Any other duties of a similar nature as directed by the Head Coach or the UK School Competitions Officer. PERSONAL PROFILE ESSENTIAL Experience Have experience of managing young people and sports teams on residential trips DESIRABLE Experience of team management in a training and competition environment. Previously attended high profile sports competitions and events. Experience of working with the press and broadcast media Knowledge Have an understanding of the issues affecting children and young people and the sensitive way in which these issues must be managed. These include controlling and managing individual and team behaviour, enforcing the UKSG codes of conduct and welfare plan. Understand the ‘performance environment’ required for an athlete Knowledge of the issues affecting Performance Volleyball Understanding of World and UK antidoping regulations. Have effective communication skills, both written and oral including conflict resolution skills. Be young people focussed and able to plan, empathise and communicate effectively with athletes, team staff, volunteers and UKSG personnel. Computer literate in Microsoft Office, Outlook and data collection. Be competent in managing and co-ordinating individual athlete and team data onto a central database system Ability to work alone, as well as part of a team An eye for detail, including when under pressure. Have an understanding and appreciation of the need to respect confidentiality. Ability to self-organise, manage time, prioritise work and meet deadlines. Knowledge of computer based statistical systems for volleyball. Skills Personal qualities Integrity and honesty. Ability to gain the confidence and respect of others. Calmness under pressure.
