Upon selection, candidates must be able to successfully complete an MPTC Basic Recruit Academy class prior to appointment as a police officer. We believe that community policing is marked by strong interpersonal relationships, safety education resources, and helpful, highly visible and capable officers. Our Department is comprised of welltrained law enforcement professionals dedicated to the prevention of crime, the tempering of conflict, the identification and solution of community problems, and the forging of solid partnerships with our students, faculty, staff, and neighbors. Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety Emil Fioravanti The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus consists of 710 acres with a student enrollment of approximately 9,400. Of those students, 4,500 students live in campus. 1,500 University employees round out the UMass Dartmouth Community. The UMass Dartmouth Police Department is Certified through the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission. Answering approximately 22,200 calls for service each year, the members of the police department are working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide a professional level of service and to ensure a safe environment to all who come to the University. Each patrol shift consists of sworn police officers, communications dispatchers and nonsworn security officers. Officers patrol on foot, in marked police cruisers, mountain bikes and on an ATV. All Department members are trained as First Responders and all units have access to AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) in the event of a medical emergency. AUTHORITY All sworn members of the Department have completed a full time municipal police academy as well as a field training program prior to being appointed as police officers. Sworn members are sworn under Chapter 75, Section 32A of the General Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. UMDPD officers have full Chapter 90 powers and exercise these powers on campus. TRAINING All members of the Department receive annual training in the areas of firearms, defensive tactics, first responder, legal updates and other areas as requested or required. The Department also provides numerous opportunities to all personnel throughout the year outside of the inservice requirements. Communications - Staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the communications staff provides a direct link between the public and police personnel. Using our CAD system, the dispatcher is able to track calls for service and the personnel assigned to respond to them. The communications center also monitors various alarms on campus. Patrol - The patrol unit runs in shifts and is responsible for patrolling the campus, answering calls for service and conducting community policing. Detective Bureau - The bureau is assigned to cases after they have been initially processed by the patrol division. The Detective is trained in crime scene processing, interview and interrogation techniques, as well as other specialized areas such as sexual assault investigation and court proceedings. Crime Prevention - The goals and objectives of our crime prevention programs are to maintain public awareness of crime on campus, provide preventive safety measures regarding both personal safety and property, proactively review lighting and brush issues on campus and to research new methods to reduce crime and the fear of crime on campus. Accreditation / Training - This division oversees Department training and maintains the policies and procedures in order to maintain Certification and Accreditation standards set by the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission.
