About the Department
DIVISIONS
Here in Public Safety, our main objective
is to provide safety and security through a
commitment to excellence and
professionalism in a community policing
environment. We believe that community
policing is marked by strong interpersonal
relationships, safety education resources,
and helpful, highly visible and capable
officers.
Our Department is comprised of welltrained law enforcement professionals
dedicated to the prevention of crime, the
tempering of conflict, the identification
and solution of community problems, and
the forging of solid partnerships with our
students, faculty, staff, and neighbors.
You can help us accomplish our mission
by engaging in open dialogue, highlighting
community relations issues, and
generating support for programming that
ensures public safety and cultivates
mutual respect and collaboration.
We thank you for appreciating and
supporting our mission, and we look
forward to providing you with the benefits
of a safe and secure campus
environment.
Chief of Police / Director of Public Safety
Emil Fioravanti
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus
consists of 710 acres with a student enrollment of
approximately 9,400. Of those students, 4,500 students
live in campus. 1,500 University employees round out
the UMass Dartmouth Community.
The UMass Dartmouth Police Department is
Certified through the Massachusetts Police
Accreditation Commission.
Answering approximately 22,200 calls for service
each year, the members of the police
department are working 24 hours a day, 365
days a year to provide a professional level of
service and to ensure a safe environment to all
who come to the University.
Each patrol shift consists of sworn police
officers, communications dispatchers and nonsworn security officers. Officers patrol on foot, in
marked police cruisers, mountain bikes and on
an ATV. All Department members are trained as
First Responders and all units have access to
AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator) in the
event of a medical emergency.
AUTHORITY
All sworn members of the Department have
completed a full time municipal police academy
as well as a field training program prior to being
appointed as police officers. Sworn members are
sworn under Chapter 75, Section 32A of the
General Laws of the Commonwealth of
Massachusetts. UMDPD officers have full
Chapter 90 powers and exercise these powers
on campus.
TRAINING
All members of the Department receive annual
training in the areas of firearms, defensive
tactics, first responder, legal updates and other
areas as requested or required. The Department
also provides numerous opportunities to all
personnel throughout the year outside of the inservice requirements.
Communications - Staffed 24 hours a
day, 365 days a year, the communications
staff provides a direct link between the
public and police personnel. Using our CAD
system, the dispatcher is able to track calls
for service and the personnel assigned to
respond to them. The communications
center also monitors various alarms on
campus.
Patrol - The patrol unit runs in shifts and is
responsible for patrolling the campus,
answering calls for service and conducting
community policing.
Detective Bureau - The bureau is
assigned to cases after they have been
initially processed by the patrol division. The
Detective is trained in crime scene
processing, interview and interrogation
techniques, as well as other specialized
areas such as sexual assault investigation
and court proceedings.
Crime Prevention - The goals and
objectives of our crime prevention programs
are to maintain public awareness of crime
on campus, provide preventive safety
measures regarding both personal safety
and property, proactively review lighting
and brush issues on campus and to research
new methods to reduce crime and the fear
of crime on campus.
Accreditation / Training - This division
oversees Department training and maintains
the policies and procedures in order to
maintain Certification and Accreditation
standards set by the Massachusetts Police
Accreditation Commission.
