The research conditions are exemplary and
reflect the high technical standard of the laboratories and the excellent libraries.
The university‘s central concern is the advancement of prospective scientists. Helmut Schmidt University (HSU) has been
granted the right to award doctoral and
post-doctoral degrees. In the field of research, Helmut Schmidt University closely
cooperates with other universities, nonuniversity research institutes and industry
in Hamburg and the metropolitan region: It
is part of the Hamburg aviation cluster, one
of the first leading-edge clusters honoured
by the German Federal Ministry of Education
and Research and sponsored with funds totalling 80 million euros. It is a partner in the
“Biocatalysis 2021” research cluster, within
which biotechnological methods for industrial production methods – the so-called
“white biotechnology” – are being developed.
Helmut Schmidt University cooperates with
the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (Centre
for Materials and Coastal Research) in materials research, a field in which both institutes are global leaders in their respective
domains. Together with Hamburg University,
Hamburg-Harburg University of Technology,
Hamburg University of Applied Sciences
and Hamburg HafenCity University, a “Renewable Energy” research association has
been established, one of the focal points
of research at Helmut Schmidt University.
Other focal points are mobility and logistics,
medical and biotechnology, transformation,
knowledge and technology management,
globalization and markets, or conflict dynamics.
In 2012, over 12 million euros from thirdparty resources were spent on research. Almost half the amount came from industry.
