Dear Parents,
Welcome to Sunny class! The children have had a great day and are keen to take on
the responsibility of being the oldest in KS1. Here is some general class information.
Mornings/Home time
We come in through the left staircase entrance, after the children put away their
coats. There are named trays to put jumpers/cardigans in and snack money/orders
can be given to Mrs Whittaker.
At 3pm, children will leave via the KS2 courtyard entrance which can be accessed
from the playground through the top gate.
Independence
Year 2 has a great focus on promoting independence. Over the next few weeks you
can help with this by encouraging your child to settle themselves in their usual
routine in the morning, (book bags, reading books, morning work etc.) while myself and
Mrs Whittaker hear individual readers.
Topic
This term our topic is Once Upon a Time. The topic web shows
details of what children will be learning through each of the
curriculum areas and is available on the Sunny Adventures class
blog or outside the classroom.
Reading
Sunny class is full of great readers! Reading at home will have played
a crucial part in the children’s success. Hearing your child read just
a couple of pages each day will ensure their continued progress.
(See also the Millionaire Reader letter) Please write in the reading diary so we can
track progress at home as well as in school, and ensure your child’s book is in school
every day. Instead of the reading rockets, children will earn a reward for reading the
same amount of books (30) as before with our new Millionaire Reader incentive.
Spellings
Some of the spelling words your child will be practising each week are phonic based,
others are taken from a list of common or high frequency words. Although some may
seem 'easy' it is important to ensure that the children are transferring these words,
spelled correctly, in their writing. The children are encouraged to LOOK at the word
they need to practice, SAY the word in chunks or use letter names, COVER it and
WRITE the word, then reveal and CHECK to see if they have spelled it correctly.
They should practise every day and hand their homework book in on Friday morning.
They will have a spelling test every Friday.
Times Tables
The children are keen to learn their times tables and earn the new KS1 badges. Please
encourage your child to practise these every day to help build their confidence for
the test on Friday. A good way to check their understanding is by picking random
questions from the tables they are learning.
Sunny
Sunny the donkey will be going home with a different child each weekend. Just like
Poppy in Mrs Smith’s class, Sunny is accompanied by a book for children to write
about their weekend. This experience provides the children with opportunities for
meeting key speaking and listening targets, enhance their confidence and develop
their writing skills. Once the book is full, it will be taken to the Donkey Sanctuary and
displayed for visitors to enjoy.
Show & Tell (voluntary)
This will take place on a Tuesday afternoon for any children who would like to take
part. The children should prepare a short presentation (about a minute) about
something related to their learning. Please do not allow them to just bring in a
toy…unless it has some educational relevance! Encourage them to think of something
they can ‘teach’ the rest of the class about…maybe something they have discovered in
a book or on an outing, or perhaps an achievement such as a swimming certificate.
PE
PE lessons will be every Tuesday afternoon.
Please ensure your child has a named PE kit in
school every day, they can be taken home for
washing at the end of each half term.
If there is anything you would like to discuss please come and see either myself or
Mrs Whittaker.
