Pro Choice - NARAL Pro

Help us Protect and Elect
Pro-Choice Candidates
in 2012
On the Verge of Losing Our Pro-Choice Majority
Elections Matter!
Since its founding, NARAL ProChoice Massachusetts has worked
tirelessly to elect pro-choice candidates to the Massachusetts legislature
to ensure the protection of women’s
access to reproductive care. We
reached our first pro-choice majority in the Massachusetts House only
in 2004. And now the Massachusetts
House of Representatives is dangerously close to losing it.
This fall’s election is crucial to
rebuilding our pro-choice majority
to protect Massachusetts from the
types of attacks on women that we
have seen recently in states across the
country.
In the Senate, pro-choice legislators currently make up well over half
of the 40 seats. We are proud to be
working hard to retain such a strong
majority.
The NARAL Pro-Choice Massa-
chusetts PAC has endorsed 62 candidates
for the House of Representatives and 23
candidates for Massachusetts Senate. But
our endorsement isn’t enough. We have
targeted a number of races where we are
providing volunteer and staff support for
particularly vulnerable pro-choice candidates. We have worked hard throughout
the summer to increase visibility and
educate voters about the importance
of electing strong pro-choice candidates
who will fight to protect women’s access
to reproductive health care as elected
officials.
The potential for losing our pro-choice
majority in the House of Representatives
is a call to action for us and all voters in
the Commonwealth. This guide is your
tool to determine which candidates and
legislators are pro-choice in each legislative district in the Commonwealth. We
hope you will stand with us and pledge
to vote pro-choice this fall.

Annual Meeting in May.

Protect and Elect Campaign: Working for Choice in MA
Interns Help Pro-Choice Candidates Across the State
Each election cycle, NARAL
Pro-Choice Massachusetts puts
interns and volunteers from across
the Commonwealth to work on
campaigns to elect pro-choice candidates. This year, eleven devoted
interns have worked continuously
throughout the summer to help elect
pro-choice candidates.
Whether talking to voters at the
door, providing information over
the phone, helping candidates with
campaign details, or attending local
events, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts’ interns have dedicated their
summer to protecting the reproductive freedoms of Massachusetts
residents.
From Andover to Attleboro, to
Ashland and Bridgewater, our team has
spent over 1,000 hours advocating for
pro-choice candidates.
And we’ve only just begun.
The Protect and Elect
Campaign also works to
create and strengthen
connections with prochoice grassroots activists throughout Massachusetts. The interns have collected
signatures at many events throughout
the summer from people pledging to
support pro-choice candidates in this
fall’s elections. We’ve received the
support of over 3,000 new pledges,
demonstrating to candidates and voters that choice matters in this election.
But we can’t succeed without you!
As summer comes to
an end and our talented
and dedicated interns
head back to school,
we look to our members—like you—to join
the effort to elect prochoice candidates. To
learn more about volunteering for pro-choice candidates in
your area, please contact our Political
Director, Michael Falcone, at 617-5568800 x14 or
[email protected].

Our mission is to develop and sustain
a grassroots constituency that uses the
political process to guarantee every
woman the right to make personal
decisions regarding the full range
of reproductive choices, including
preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing
healthy children, and choosing safe, legal,
accessible abortion.
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts is
working to promote greater diversity
within our organization, to form
collaborations with communities of color,
and to represent more fully the needs of
the many diverse constituencies in the
Commonwealth.

NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Endorsement Policy
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts endorses candidates with strong pro-choice positions
and structured campaigns. Since we place a high priority on issue leadership and a pro-choice
voting record. In certain races we have endorsed one pro-choice candidate over another.
In races where we have made an endorsement, we list only the endorsed candidate.
In races where we have not made an endorsement, we list every candidate in the race and
their positions on choice.
A Note About the Candidate Questionnaire
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts sent questionnaires to every candidate running for an open
seat, targeted challengers, and incumbents whose record and/or positions were unknown to the
organization, or needed clarification.
The questionnaire addresses a range of reproductive rights and health issues, including Roe v.
Wade, restrictions on access to abortion care, Medicaid funding for abortions, comprehensive
health education, the repeal of anti-choice statutes still in effect in Massachusetts, funding for
family planning services and teen pregnancy prevention programs, and efforts to chip away at
Roe V. Wade through legislative vehicles. Responses to the questionnaire were used to assess
candidates’ positions.

Thank You!
NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts thanks those
pro-choice Representatives and
Senators retiring from the legislature for all their
work to protect choice. We appreciate that they
stood strong for women’s reproductive health
in the Commonwealth. We will long remember
their work and wish them the best in their future
endeavors.

Help to protect our pro-choice majority. Vote pro-choice this fall.
At a time when a woman’s right to choose is under unprecedented attack, we need
more legislators here in Massachusetts who will stand up and safeguard a woman’s
ability to make personal, private decisions about pregnancy and childbearing.
