If you have never attended the Annual MHARF Trainer’s Challenge of
the Unwanted Horse, this may be the year you should change that! With
seventeen horses and two mules competing, this year’s event will be our
biggest ever. The Challenge, which takes place at the Leatherdale Equine
Center on the U of M St. Paul campus on Saturday, September 17th, is in
it’s ninth year and has quickly grown to be MHARF’s largest adoption event
and fundraiser of the year. There are many reasons for the success of this
Edison
event, but the biggest one is the dedication of the trainers who apply for
Patriot
this 180 day volunteer commitment! One thing we have learned in the
twenty-two years since the founding of MHARF is that a solid foundation in
Newton
training is the one thing that is most likely to keep a horse from ending up
in a situation where it is “unwanted”. Many of the equines we take in are
untrained, and in some cases they are entirely unhandled or dealing with
Ki
trust issues from improper handling. In order to make
these equines more
Thorn
adoptable we need to provide training. By holding the Challenge and hav- Ming
than
Nikita ing volunteer trainers compete for prize money we are able to more
“Dart”
quadruple the funds we have available for training! What makes this even
better and allows us to stretch Liberty
our yearly training budget further? The maDenny
jority of the prize money is donated by event sponsors!
That brings us to the second reason for the success of the Challenge:
our generous sponsors! This year MHARF is thrilled to welcome Hay Chix
as our $5,000 Grand Championship Sponsor, Nutrena as ourLevi

Poco
Championship Sponsor, Espana Silk All Natural Grooming Products as our
$500 Halter/Condition Class Sponsor, an Anonymous Donor in honor of
three adopted Challenge alumni (Valentina, Black Magic, and Raayna) as
our $500 Pleasure Class Sponsor, an Anonymous Donor in honor of Sasha &
Derek Kohlhase at Dart Ranch as our $500 Trail/Obstacle Class Sponsor,
Horse Crazy Market as our $500 Freestyle Class Sponsor, & the Animal

MHARF Has Need for Foster and Adoptive Homes!
We understand that adopting a horse is a big commitment.
If you are considering adopting and just aren’t quite ready
to make the decision, why not think about fostering a
horse for MHARF? Foster homes are extremely important
in most animal rescue organizations. Not only do foster
placements allow the organization to take in many more
animals, they also allow rescued animals a chance to experience a safe environment and receive kind handling and
training. Both of these things dramatically increase an
animal’s confidence and make them much more adoptable.
The majority of equines MHARF has in need of foster
homes are those who have already had their vet and farrier work done and just need someplace to stay while they
gain weight, work on things like ground manners, and
wait for their new home. We also have several horses who
are slated for the 2017 Trainer’s Challenge who are in
need of foster placement. This is a great way to participate in the Challenge even if you aren’t a trainer! We
have had many people who have fostered horses that latKiplingon page 3)

MHARF Launches New Website
Over the last several years many of our supporters kindly suggested that a more interactive and user-friendly website would help get our message out to more people, as
well as streamline the process of making inquiries into adoption, fostering, and volunteering. Well, we listened! In April of 2016 we launched our new website (which can
still be found at www.mnhoovedanimalrescue.org) complete with online applications,
contact options, updated galleries, resource links and much more! On the new site
users can easily access adoption and foster guidelines and applications, donation links
and wish lists, volunteer opportunities, photo galleries, testimonials, and newsletters.
Information can still be found on all of our adoptable horses and other animals, as
well as those who have been adopted recently. We have an updated page with full
Trainer’s Challenge information, including links to trainer Facebook pages and contact information. Most importantly, the new site includes information about what to
do in the case of suspected abuse or neglect of animals, links for reporting possible
humane cases, and links for resources for horse owners in need of assistance. Viewers can also scroll through the newsfeed from our Facebook page. So far we are very pleased with the success of our new site, but it is still a work in progress that we are making improvements on every day. We always welcome suggestions and comments on how it can be
further improved! To send us a comment or suggestion please use the “Contact Us” option on the new site. Thank you!
MHARF Equines Participate in Truhaven Ranch Diamond in the Rough Competition
On August 20th, 2016, nine equines from the rescue programs at MHARF and Truhaven
Ranch participated in the Diamond in the Rough Training Competition at Truhaven
Ranch in Winsted, MN. The competition is similar to the MHARF Trainer’s Challenge but
it is for horses, ponies & donkeys that are too small or too young to compete in the Challenge. There were two divisions in the Diamond in the Rough competition: one for equines
44” and over who were old enough start under saddle (4 and over), and one for equines
age 3 and under who were shown in-hand. The trainer and “student” teams included Barret w/ Ruby Filhart, Mrs. Attenburro w/ Elayna & Morgan Bronson, Odessa with Rachel
Lacina, Oden with Sue Ann Woo & Debbie Anderson, O’ Henry w/ Morgan & Elayna Bronson, Peter w/ Krysia Anderson, Rook w/ Kathy Ng, Shenanigan w/ Tiahna Flemming, &
Summer w/ Sarah Smith. In the first division the Grand Championship was won by
Barret, the Reserve Championship by O’Henry. In the second division Shenanigan
was Grand Champ and Peter was Reserve Champ. Thank you so much to all of the
trainers for their time and dedication this summer! For more information on the Diamond
in the Rough Competition please visit www.truhavenranch.org.

Foster Homes cont.
tell us that caring for these horses and then watching their journey during
the Challenge and their subsequent adoption is one of the most rewarding
experiences they have ever had. Of course, our goal is always to find permanent homes for our horses (and even those who are slated for the Challenge
are still available for adoption until the training period begins in the
spring), but foster homes are extremely important to our program so we can
continue to respond when called in by law enforcement to assist in humane
cases around the state. Our foster providers do need to have some level of
experience with horses. We have foster home guidelines and requirements
that must be met to ensure the safety of the horse as well as the foster provider. Our goal is to make sure both horse and human have the best possible
experience! For more information on fostering (and adopting!), including the
guidelines and the application, please visit www.mnhoovedanimalrescue.org
