Early Years Outdoor Play Policy – Mesne Lea Community Primary
School
Rationale
Children should enjoy meaningful activity both indoors and outside and experience the impact that
this has on their physical and intellectual development and general health and well being.
Children will have access to a multi sensory environment which complements and enhances all
aspects of their development and learning through its physical open ended nature.
Aims
To create opportunities to explore and learn in outdoor environments
Objectives







To explore using all the senses
To develop a respect for the environment
To problem solve, challenge themselves and test theories
To use language to describe, explain, predict, ask questions and develop ideas
To risk assess their own actions within a safe environment
To investigate changes in the environment through the seasons
To allow children to develop the necessary gross and fine motor skills to enable them to

Implementation
In order for this policy to be implemented in the setting practitioners will;








Provide open ended resources which give children the opportunity to self select
Present resources which will engage and motivate children to learn
Dress children appropriately for all weather conditions
Interact with children to extend their learning
Model a positive attitude to outdoor play
Ensure the outdoor area is adequate, safe and secure
Raise parental awareness of the benefits of outdoor play
Ensure that we are committed to an inclusive approach to outdoor play
