EXAMPLE:
It has been said that war is “long periods of boredom punctuated by moments
of sheer terror.” How does this phrase capture the experience of the soldiers
in Fallen Angels?
The phrase “long periods of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror”
sums up Perry’s descriptions of war in Fallen Angels. Just after Perry arrives in
Vietnam, he spends several days getting to know the guys in his hooch, hearing about
volleyball games, trudging to various meals, and watching movies. Then, suddenly, he
and his squad have to go on patrol where Perry’s new friend, Jenkins, gets blown up
by a mine. After this, Perry thinks about the possibility of stepping on a mine every
times he takes a step outside the perimeter of his base camp. Another time, the squad
is so bored that when the movie sent to them is a repeat, they take turns acting out the
parts to keep themselves busy. PeeWee has enough free time to weave a
checkerboard out of reeds so they can play a game. This is in sharp contrast to going
on patrol to a village where Perry is so terrified of a villager with an empty gun that he
empties a full clip of ammunition into the man’s face and has to be dragged out of the
hut to get himself back together. Initially, it seems that the “long periods of boredom”
are time for relaxation, but eventually the “sheer terror” of war takes over even when
the soldiers have down-time, making it impossible for them to relax.
