Transition This is the term we use when talking about the children’s movement from their current class to their new
one. We always seek to make this as smooth as possible. If you have any queries or concerns about transition please
talk them over with your child’s teacher or with me. For Y2 transition arrangements will begin shortly after half term;
Y2 will receive a letter with all relevant dates and details once these have been confirmed with Southdale.

For the other Year groups in school this will involve the sharing of information about the children, the children’s new
teacher visiting their current class and Move Up Week. During Move Up week the UFS children will register at and be
collected from Main School where they will practise being Year One. The Y1 children will register in classroom two
and they will practise being Year Two. Y2 will be “Summer Campers” during Move Up week; doing a range of
different activities across the school with different school adults. Last year the “beach party” was a favourite! LFS will
attend as usual; a further letter will follow with details of an additional session for the one missed on 8th July.
“Party in the Precinct” You can join in the fun by just going along. You could look at a small selection of our art work
in the Town Hall. You could also enter the competition; Bring A Decorated Crown; for the best decorated
crown. There are 3 age categories: Under 10s, 10-17, 18 and above. The crowns will be judged at 3pm so can be
dropped off at the crown stall in the market place on 11th June anytime from 10am onwards. The EOCT Co-ordinator
has let us know that at Create Ossett (a craft shop/provision on Bank Street in Ossett) the owner is offering free
design and make after school sessions on 9th and 10th June. Parents/carers and children can go to the shop to
design and make their own crown, to enter into the competition on 11th June. These sessions are free of charge
(though a small charge may be made for elaborate designs/additions). The sessions are also available during the day
on 9th and 10th June for parents/carers with pre-school children.
Summer As the weather (hopefully) warms up the children will be moving more of their learning into the outdoor
learning environments. This means that Year One and Two, as currently in the Foundation Stage, may spend one,
two or more sessions outside, in addition to morning and lunchtime playtimes. Please ensure you send your child
prepared for all the joys of an English summer; sun tan lotioned, with a sun hat please, but they will also still need a
cardigan/jumper and a jacket or raincoat; we do still go outside in the rain!
If you wish to send in suntan lotion for your child to re-apply please ensure the bottle is named and given to your
child’s teacher. Please make sure your child knows how to re-apply the lotion themselves.
As this is also the season when cardigans/jumpers are taken on and off frequently PLEASE can you ensure names are
clearly written on your child’s clothes. Can I also ask you to please check that your child has brought home the
correct clothes; one blue age 5-6 jumper/cardigan looks much like another and the children don’t always check.
Regarding footwear for summer; if you wish to send your child in different footwear for summer we don’t require
school shoes but would ask that whatever the children wear protects their feet and toes. Open toed sandals and
other such footwear are not very good for school; with running at playtimes and chairs in classrooms toes can easily
be hurt and these don’t always have a good grip on the sole.
In response to feedback from parents on playground “incidents” before and after school please can I reiterate that it
is the responsibility of parents and carers to ensure that children using the playgrounds / trim trails and grass area
before or after school have adult supervision. When the children use these areas during the school day there is
always at least one adult interacting with the children as we recognise the children are at an age where they need
adult support to play together well and safely, especially when they are part of a larger group. The children are
aware of school rules and guidelines on behaviour.
Uniform We have had a request from “The Box” in Ossett to supply uniform. As with flyers sent home, this is not an
endorsement of any particular company or supplier, this is just to let you know there is an alternative to Speedstitch,
available locally, should you wish to use it.
Next half term Foundation Stage’s topic is “Growth and Change”. Key Stage One’s topic is “Pirates and Mermaids”.
As ever, if you have any questions or comments, please speak with me or your child’s teacher. If you cannot get into
school in person please call or email. We will endeavour to get back to you as quickly as possible if whoever you wish
to speak to isn’t available to take your call.
Have a wonderful half term break,
Kind Regards,
Mrs Shute
