Description of Studies:
Art is a nine-week connections program that involves the process of creating and responding to art based upon the National
Visual Arts Standards. Students will learn how to perceive, think, talk, and write about artworks through the study of art. By
exploring different art materials, techniques, and processes required, students will be able to create artwork that connects
meaningfully to their lives.
National Visual Arts Content Standards
1: Understands and applies media, techniques, and processes related to the visual arts
2: Knows how to use structures and functions of art.
3: Knows a range of subject matter, symbols, and potential ideas in the visual arts.
4: Understands the visual arts in relation to history and cultures.
5: Understands the characteristics and merits of one’s own artwork and the artwork of others.
6: Makes connections between visual arts and other disciplines.
Required Supplies:
Optional Supplies:
-Composition Book or other forms of sketch/art journal
-$5 for canvas panel and painting supplies
-Pencils/Pens
-Various art supplies for personal use.

Responsible for art journals, projects, participation, and clean-up
A documented three-step discipline plan will be utilized: 1-warning, 2- Detention, 3- Office Referral
Grade Determinations:
Student grades will be updated regularly on Parent Portal and grade reports will be distributed as scheduled by Forsyth County
Schools. Report Card Distribution Dates: October 17, January 11, March 20, May 31 (Final report cards mailed)
Art grades are based on the following:

Formative- 20% (Engagement in daily work/opening assignments, class work, homework,, quizzes, clean up)

Summative- 80% (Tests, Projects, Art Journals, Artwork )
Make up Work: Students will have 5 days upon return from excused absences to complete work.
Recovery sessions: Will be held at 8:15am in the art room. Students must get their agendas signed prior to coming to make up
assessments or work on artwork. Additional days can be arranged by request. Students will have the opportunity to recover all
graded assignments, for a maximum recovery grade of 80%.
-It is expected that all students complete all assignments. Rather than giving a grade of zero for work that has not been
completed, students will be assigned morning detention to complete the missing assignments. If the assignments have still
not been completed, the student will receive an Administrative Referral and will be assigned to ISS for a final opportunity to
complete outstanding work. Not doing the work is not an option at SFMS!!
-The Media Center will be open every day at 8:00am in order to provide students with the opportunity to utilize the school
facilities- including computers with Internet access- to complete school work. Students who choose to use the Media Center
will follow normal rules and will work independently to preserve a quiet and focused learning environment.
